Doesn't his raw talent compare to a guy named Buxton when he was drafted. If that is true I am going to want to find out what I have. He needs the chance to show he has a position wherever that might be in the field. I feel the Twin's need to keep transitioning to a more athletic player. He fits that mold.
In a perfect world this kid needs some more time at AAA. If he can duplicate last year's AAA stats again this year and contributes close to that at the major league level the Twin's have something. With his defense and energy behind the plate that is all the hitting the Twin's need out of him. When he becomes our every day catcher our pitching stats will improve noticeably.
I saw Gordon play short last year. What is it that the Twins don't like about his play there? Also the same goes for CF or even LF. Thought he did a decent job after a slow start in the field.
Well said. Almost every team in MLB would love to have Buxton on that contract. Will it work out for him and the Twins? Stay tuned. What I have learned in life is to bet on good people. Buck will be a great ambassador for the Minnesota Twins along with a very good player. Can't wait to walk into the ball park and see that great smile on that field. Great job Twin's FO and Buck on coming together to find the common ground.
We have a common ground with Miami and Oakland to make a trade. They have what we need and we have what they need. Forget high priced long term contracts for free agent pitchers. We can fill 2 spots in our rotation by making these trades. The asking price is not outrageous and will not break the Pholad's piggy bank. Time for Pholad family to put some pressure on their 2 hires to get this done. I hear about our organizational depth - let us use it.
Sign Gray and Knebel. Trade with Miami for Lopez giving up Kepler, Jeffers and a prospect. Trade for one of Oakland"s SP giving them a package of prospects for their rebuild. Sign Buxton for the above base and incentives. This would give us a team to be seriously considered for post season play but more importantly a team we as Twins fan could get behind and show up to proudly watch play.
I too blame the FO. Will they still be navigating their plan when more free agents sign before Dec. 1? Eduardo Rodriguez would be a good fit in a Twin's rotation at the price he signed for. Another option gone. Being a season ticket holder I am getting increasingly disgusted with the FO performance. Come on guys - people were hired to run the FO who were supposedly the young bright minds in baseball. Your performance stinks in your signings, your trade results and 40 man roster management. Now you want to low ball the man almost every Twin's fan comes to see. Give Buxton all the incentives he wants - my experience with incentives is that no one reaches all of their incentives but if they come close it has been a great year. Dear Jim if you don't sign Buxton you can have my tickets back and I hope other Twin's fans do the same. And I thought Calvin Griffin was tight.
Agree that a strong bullpen can make an average starting staff look better. The Twins have many openings in their starting staff and questions in their bullpen for next year. Work to strengthen the bullpen first then the starting staff.
Hard to fill all our needs in one offseason. For our market follow and learn from Tampa Bay. Look at the age and experience of the pitcher starting their first game of the playoffs. We have similar pitchers in our system.
The Twins were a terrible defensive team and not much better than that fundamentally. You can not be a good team without that. That is on Rocco. We saw many throws from the outfield go to the wrong base or miss cutoff men completely. Runners then advancing extra bases. This gives teams extra outs, make our pitchers face extra hitters and give teams extra runs. That is a major failure by him and his staff. All the rest I can live with because a lot of it is subjective. For that reason I feel the manager failed this season.
Great reading, some very good analysis. Would it make sense for the Twins to build a bullpen with depth like Tampa Bay and let the young SP (Ryan, Ober, Gant and others take their turn) and see what happens.
If we are paying Josh Donaldson 24 million a year in the twilight of his career why can't we "reach" and sign a player like Buxton to a contract that will make him a Twin for a long time. His contract and Donaldson"s contract would only be on the books for 1 year. After that if injuries are still a concern why can't he DH. This kind of player comes around hardly ever. I feel it is the front office's job to make this work financially and on the field. It comes down to wins and losses. We are 50 games over 500 in 5 years with Buxton in the lineup. If you tell me the Twins will be 10 games over 500 next for sure I am liking my chances for post season games.
You can never under estimate the value of good starting pitching and what it can do for your team. Just look at Washington last year. Add in an above average to good bullpen and I consider Cleveland a viable threat to take the division title away from us.
