Big Win! Excruciating to watch!! My oldest moved to Boston in June for her first career job and my youngest is visiting this weekend …….they’re texting me that they are loving rubbing the Twin’s win in the face of the people at table next to them…..,hope they’re careful!!! Sounds fun though. What a bullpen performance - had no business being in this one with ONE run through 11 innings. Duran almost let it slip through our fingers. Ronny - Louie - Tonkin - Blewett - Sands & even Thielbar!!! Duran & Jax a couple more ho hum innings - wow!! Nobody available from Pen on Saturday??? 8 guys threw and only Blewett was really well rested. Irvin threw 30 pitches yesterday. Sure hope Pablo is able to hang for a while on Saturday. Looks like rain in daytime so it might turn into an early evening game? Gotta start scoring some runs! …………. I’m typically a Rocco backer with a more pragmatic view of his moves - seldom 2nd guess. However, how in the hell is Margot pinch hitting instead of Julien v. RH reliever? Maybe they had a lefty up? Sure seemed odd to pinch hit Margot for Vazquez…….. understand Vazquez was tiring but Margot for his 30th pinch hit appearance - he’s gotta be lacking confidence in that spot - right?

I realize the last month has helped morale anywhere under the Twins Nation - fans, Mgmt, nor players are feeling great. That said, I think the future of playing with a competent Buxton, along with Lewis/Wallner/Larnach/Jeffers/Lee ………Ryan back with Lopez & Ober plus about 4 other young starters………a Pen that will start the Spring with 14-15 options with refreshed health……..will make things intriguing for a guy that places emphasis on winning! Also, his $37.5M salary in ‘25 (& ongoing) would really limit the takers on the other end of a trade…..so that needs to be weighed of one wants to be “on a winner”.

Team doesn’t need a SS with .300 points less OPS either………Lee isn’t ready at the plate in ‘24.

Because Lewis is already hurt 65% of the time - doesn’t need a position that demands more range and physical challenges. Correa is the best offensive player through the year at this point. Removing him via trade would be a bit crazy, since the fan reaction would be to go sign some FA slugger to help the offense……..”why doesn’t ownership spend?!?!?!” Having Lee move to SS is premature since Correa has to remedy the foot problems no matter where he’s positioned. Also, Lee has done almost nothing to prove he is a competent hitter at the MLB level. I hope he proves his early results were a fluke but right now he looks weak & overmatched. He’s only played a portion of the season due to his own injuries - fatigue shouldn’t be an issue, at least not physical fatigue. To me, he looks really rough at the plate!!!

Larnach - 114 OPS+ Buxton - 136 OPS+ Wallner - 151 OPS+ Lewis - 122 OPS+ Correa - 152 OPS+ Castro - 105 OPS+ Santana - 108 OPS+ Jeffers - 106 OPS+ Miranda - 116 OPS+ Farmer hitting .406 in September If Larnach can run, this would be the probable starting line-up v. RH pitching. NINE starters all over 100 OPS+. 2 months ago, only Orioles could compete with these numbers through the line-up………doubt anyone else is better top to bottom. Hitters gotta hit………13 runs in a 4 game series isn’t going to get it done! Can’t pitch nor Manage around not scoring/hitting.

Cleveland’s Pen is a bit of an outlier - they are excellent!!! Essentially every other Team in MLB would love to emulate the Guardian bullpen……Twins being just one of probably 26 other Teams.

I get the Angst ……..a month ago the Team was 17 games over .500 & cruising to playoffs. Don’t recall any attendance records being set back then. Wins & winning are ASSUMED in most markets…..if it’s early in the year fans “…..can always get out to see a game later in the year - more meaningful…” or wait til they aren’t doing as well & complain about not being good enough to watch or spend money on…….it’s a personal choice that can always be rationalized.

…….& Jorge may have only needed one pitch to give up a dinger and ended the misery more quickly. If’s & but’s……….. guys gotta get more than 3 hits in 10 innings!

1) To me, ‘22 & ‘24 are completely different from a health standpoint. As beat up as this current club seems, the ‘22 club was starting 3 AAA outfielders for a pretty long stretch the last couple months……Cave - Celestino - Wallner - Larnach - Contreras etc…………Rudderless is maybe true, but I gotta point to 3 hits yesterday - 6 guys going 0-24 on Wednesday - previously, 2 straight days of losses with 5 hits. The lack of offense goes way beyond the Manager’s responsibility. 2) I cannot let myself believe that the organization nor the upper management has control of injuries to players. Muscle pulls - soft tissue, sure the training staff can influence those. The rest is just the way it goes, IMO. MANY other Teams have numerous injuries throughout their rosters - particularly pitchers. High strikeout rates for the Staff & solid OPS guys seems to be a pretty smart goal. 3)I live in Cincinnati & can’t really comment accurately on the media issues and effects on revenue. It surely seems to be an ongoing problem that will obviously ripple into payroll.

Twins are either 1 or 2 games out of 2nd Wildcard at the end of today. Royals have 3 at home v. a fairly solid Giants club. They then go on the road for last 6, ending in Atlanta……. can be caught. Red Sox are going to be charged up this weekend. 1 win & we’re OK with them as our Division record almost certainly has to be better than theirs in the East. Tigers are the “probable” 2nd wildcard team at this point on paper as they finish with 3 at home v. White Sox. They are something - sweeping Royals in K.C. - gotta tip your cap. Mariners are still hanging around. Twins, with one win in Boston, holds the tie breaker advantage with all 4 Clubs. Hoping it comes in handy!

The Orioles just DFA’d Kimbrel yesterday…… I wouldn’t consider them as a poorly run organization. Teams/Managers play odds for their player’s performance……,”how can Craig keep struggling with his experience and stuff??” He’s sucked for an extended period and they hung on to him and kept giving him opportunities until there were only 10 games left in the season. His history & $$ owed played into it but the point is Teams want to believe or assume guys will regress or progress to their norms. (i.e. Caleb Thielbar)

Sub 3.00 ERA with a 97-98 mph fastball & a two run lead. Seems logical to me.

Seems that is clearly what the Manager did - he tried to use his Best available option with Henriquez. He’s throwing 97-98 but w/o command. His off speed got hit. Happens. Very unpleasant but theoretically, he’s better to get 3 outs than Tonkin or Blewett. I realize you are being line-up specific with the “best players” comment. If 6 guys in the line-up go for the collar the Team has no chance. Castro got hit twice and went 1-3……CC & Wallner had 3 hits each……4-9 in line-up were 0-24. The good players aren’t the problem, the balance of the line-up can’t be dormant. Brooks Lee could be the most disappointing team member over the past weeks - he looks like a 9th grader on the high school varsity. As much as Julien is a defensive question mark and his offense is not great, he has to play in front of Lee v. RH pitching. Win today and they’re 1 game out of 2nd Wildcard!

Canterino & Prelipp have to pitch more than 25 consecutive innings without getting hurt before I can seriously read anything about them and think it makes sense for the Big Club - am hopeful but also skeptical. Irvin is going to have to do more than get 1 out to be on the club next year but if he throws OK over next 10-11 games he’ll get some invite as he’s in the 40 man now. Would love to see Varland & Paddack committed to the Pen from the jump next year! I think since Irvin can’t pitch post season that Alcala will be back in October - refreshed! Stewart & Topa could be nice icing on the cake in ‘25. Winder & Headrick provide depth along with young guys like Raya maybe getting brief call-ups. That’s 14 bodies if Irvin remains in the mix - this is assuming Thielbar is gone. Funderburk makes 15 tough.

That’s one path……….however, Royals just lost to Tigers and we’re only 1.5 games back of K.C. and we own tiebreaker with them (w/Tigers too) …….. Royals NEED a win tomorrow or they start really feeling pinched!!! Theoretically, while playing the ChiSox at home the last weekend, the Tigers could go by both the Twins & the Royals. If we tie Royals were in as #3 Wildcard with Tigers as #2. Royals have 3 games with Giants in K.C. this weekend……… then 3 games on road with each of Nationals & Braves. It would be cool to sneak by K.C. with some decent ball over last eleven games and get the #2 spot…………Orioles are wobbling. That last weekend with them at Target will be big.

Only need to face 3 guys in same inning. If you end an inning, whether you faced one, two, or more guys you don’t have to come back out. It’s a speed up rule……..no time difference if you replace the pitcher between innings.

“……always has him throwing 2 innings” is not correct. He was THE 7th inning guy for a good stretch of time. Texas massacre happened in 9 pitches, a 4-0 lead gone. Relief Saturday in Ober’s start, walk on 5-6 pitches to load bases - then 1st pitch grand slam. There was no ominous 2nd inning of work in either of these games. The poster here says he’s given up runs in 5 of last 8 appearances. To me, that tells more of the story than 6 outs against the Reds on Sunday. He looked good Sunday in a two inning stint with a 9-2 lead. My assumption is he’s not the most mentally stable guy in the Pen?? It’s a guess but often a player sends negativity off the field. Is he tired - is he mentally tired? Is he a knucklehead? I don’t know. I do know that the organization wants to do well and if them optioning him (probably due to needed break) is what they see as best course of action, I accept it even if it isn’t crystal clear.

Zebby is THE 5th starter - can’t move him - he’s starting today and again on Sunday - and so on………….Thielbar - Blewett - Tonkin have no options. Hopefully, Alcala will be rested and ready come October……..it’s a calculated risk with Irvin!!

When this was written Buxton had been activated for 3 games ……,. Correa had been activated for 2 games. They had both sat out Sunday. The answer is YES. The two will play as many innings they are able while the Team is competitive. Correa had been out 2 months for a reason - his foot is screwed up. Buxton was out for a reason - his hip is screwed up. Playing any pro sport with a lower body injury is beyond challenging. Expecting guys to actually go at full tilt for the first time or two and not have to “see how they react” and maybe sit a game ……… and that being negative or unusual is naive, to me.

As a contrast - Twins lose at 1B - 2B - 3B - LF ……….starting pitcher depth………Bullpen. These are at a minimum. I’m a Twins fan and like our club overall but in ‘24 the Guardians are superior and have backed up in standings themselves over last 60 days or the gap would make things even more obvious. Bieber has been out of their rotation essentially all year and Twins lost Ryan maybe 5 weeks ago. They have had 3-4 other pitcher injuries just like the Twins……couple starters & key Pen guys. Ramirez is in top 3-4 for MVP in A.L. ………they can play small ball & they are hitting HR’s at a respectable rate this year. Going into yesterday’s game they were one game behind the Yankees for best record in the A.L. & then they won again!

A few moves the twins could make in the off season
JD-TWINS commented on C-Gangster's blog entry in March To October
Pure fantasy. Not intended to be negative nor personal but it’s way over the top. Signing either Flaherty or Santander as an individual would be an absolute shocker, but signing both cannot and will not happen. As previous contributor pointed out, Festa is the 5th starter and there will be no Flaherty signing. After his performance this year, it will be difficult for the Dodgers to not re-sign him. If not L.A. then another team willing to go 2-3 years at $22M plus per year…….not in the Twins wheelhouse. Santander has 41 HR’s. He’ll be sought after by a handful of clubs and all would have more $$ to spend than the Twins. Santander is essentially a RF. Keeping and paying Kepler to be a “flex” outfielder for depth is too expensive and not very practical. He plays RF - period. His offense is suspect and anything but consistent. They are better off with Wallner/Larnach & even giving Kirilloff (117 OPS+ in ‘23) a chance as depth corner OF. A left handed reliever would be a nice addition. My assumption is they ride Funderburk into Spring Training as the probable answer……….would like to see some spending for this need……,,it’s tough to find consistent Pen help and that’s why they continue to fill needs without spending. Often Pen guys have 60 day windows of success & then fatigue, injury, league catching up, or just regressing back to why they are relievers sets in with them…….this happens across the game, not just in Minneapolis.
