  1. Am through 3 innings of Varland’s first start & he’s not sharp. Up around 70 pitches through 3 innings. Going to 3-2 with probably 10 of the first 16 batters. Really good stuff!! Nice change-up …. good fastball …….Milwaukee announcers complementing his cutter/slider. Just out there THROWING. Does not look like a pitcher at all. His thoughts on location either aren’t there or he lacks command. I think he’s throwing it where he wants most of the time - I don’t think he has a very good plan. Looks like an athlete that’s never been coached. I like Louie but he’s not giving himself nor the Team a chance. Hope these 3-4 guys behind him have a better approach. A lot to expect with youth!
  2. Are: Brave’s depth…….they can have 2-3 starters out of the line-up and the remaining guys will carry the club’s offense! They are really good & have mashers at least 1-6 in their line-up. They’ll piece together a Pen that’s at least average.
  3. I like the focus the Team seems to have on slider - tough pitch to hit and can be tough to master. If the pitcher can use it around the plate consistently it makes a guy’s fastball that much more effective. No need to keep trying to find guys that can be moved into the 7th/8th inning (high leverage). If he can pitch effectively in the 5th - 6th to get to a clean 7th for another guy - that amount of value/niche is just fine for a guy that was 10 or 11 on the Pen depth chart 3-4 weeks ago.
  4. New people are great. Bullpen is supposed to be (predicted by baseball people) to be the best in the A.L. - 3 of top 5 guys are hurt to start the season. They are OK with depth guys for now……should start returning in 3-4 weeks. Have a couple starters that are “hopeful” at the back of the rotation. One guy that’s “consistent” laid an egg Sunday. Generally, the staff should be top 2-4 in the American League.
  5. Starting pitchers through 2 games: 12 1/3 innings - 10 hits - 1 walk - 2 runs - dozen K’s!!! 1-0. Not bad, even if against the Royals. Looking forward to Ober today.
  6. No problem with replacing Wallner for key speed & to have the RH bat in line-up against Will Smith from the Pen, eventually. I didn’t get pinch hitting Margot for Martin - seemed unnecessary.
  7. Played Correa 135 games and he had a hard time running in about 100 of those!
  8. Last year the Yankees had 7 guys play 100 or more games. The Dodgers in ‘23 had 10 guys play 100 or more games. The TWINS had 9 guys play 100 or more games in ‘23. Gotta have “best guys” healthy to have them in the line-up. Buxton - hurt Lewis - hurt Farmer - hurt Polanco - hurt Kepler - hurt Mahle - hurt Maeda - hurt Tough to get guys on the field if they aren’t capable of playing! Good managers win with what they have……win when guys aren’t producing……Kepler - Buxton - Vazquez - etc. Nothing wrong with the Manager, IMO.
  9. 6-8 weeks seems probable the way he was hobbling at 3B Thursday.
  10. On the bright side - Buxton just hit a one hopper over the 3B head for a double……..he looks like he’s 23! Knock on wood somewhere.
  11. Glad he seems mentally prepared to be in either corner spot as well as CF. He’ll get AB’s and pinch run a bunch IMO. They now have an alternative for Kepler in RF v. LH starting pitching with Martin. Castro at 3B - Farmer at 2B - Margot in LF is a good line-up v. LH pitching.
  12. Doubt he gets many - he may spell Buxton every 5th day? I think he pinch runs and plays OF defense after entering games. He’s insurance. He’ll get a few AB’s a week. Still behind Margot.
  13. Martin doesn’t seem special at this point - maybe average? Julien walks a lot with almost too much plate discipline, if that’s possible. He is a special hitter even with the minor criticism! Julien homers like every 21 AB’s……..Martin might hit 8 HR in a season some day. My assumption is the high walk rate being the comparison………. Maybe the BA being in the .260 - .270 range? Julien has way more Pop in his bat and always will.
  14. I like Kirilloff as the long term solution but I like Santana batting LH & making every play at 1B v. Martin hitting against RH pitching. Plenty of time for Martin to get playing time - I guess I’m not that curious. Baldelli will mix it up plenty I’m sure. I think they’ll use him to run for guys like Vazquez & Santana from 5th/6th inning and on in the game. He’ll see time in the OF!
  15. BIG stretch to think what was seen on Thursday was a cramp…….he didn’t know what had happened specifically was the impression I got from his interview. I just hope he “heals” and this isn’t a recurring issue! Should be clarified this afternoon. Having a guy like Castro that can step in v. RH pitching everyday is a nice option.
  16. Would be really surprised if MARTIN wasn’t the call-up today. Gotta have OF support with Castro moving to 3B on some regular basis over the next couple months. Obviously, he can play IF if they have an emergency need there. LARNACH is on IL with foot problems, so there doesn’t seem to be any other reasonable guy other than Martin. Keirsey didn’t get much of a look this Spring. Helman is a big possibility, but am assuming Martin is higher on the list.
  17. RIGHT - Martin, Keirsey, Helman, Larnach are all potential support OF options for Big Club. I hear ALL wanting Dobnack to be a good story, but struggle with that as a reality. Seems Festa & SWR & Headrick would all get some action prior to Randy? We’ll see how everyone looks in April….hope there are one or two options to promote as needed.
  18. DH doesn’t do anything relative to being safe - you gotta run to play offense too. He wasn’t “casually jogging” to 3B. Hobbling after he hit 2B bag - his momentum carried him forward for the most part. Cannot imagine him being able to sprint for at least 6 weeks…….probably can’t do much of anything with his legs for 3 weeks………hopefully, the treatments of the day…cryo, etc. get him feeling better more quickly!
  19. So very true!! Castro can play a decent 3B & he bats LH, so he’ll get a bunch of reps v. RH pitching. Since the game is dominated (as a %) by RH pitching, I think Castro plays quite often at 3B. Farmer is the best defensive option at any 3 of the fielding positions on the dirt. He’ll play at 3rd a bit so Castro isn’t in line - up 100% of the time. If Martin is the guy brought up, since he can play some CF as well as LF or even 2B if desired, Castro is principally on the IF for next 6-8 weeks.
  20. Not a big fan due to inability to stay on the field, but watching Buxton in the Box with healthy legs & in CF sliding around under everything hit his way was fun to see as well!
  21. I really like the Festa prediction! Agree on Ryan having decent stuff, or better, but still being an enigma on the mound. Don’t care how many K’s Jax has, respectfully. Get guys out! Lewis is stricken from making All-Star Team with the Quad injury ….,…it’s going to be 6-8 weeks of waiting for him to get back. Lewis’ history & getting hurt yesterday reinforces, IMO, why they never consider trading (the also injured) Brooks Lee. Lewis needs to play 3 months in a row at some point before anyone considers that Lee isn’t essential depth in the organization. Hoping Pablo gets another chance in Playoffs so the nation can see how really good he is!
  22. SO, AGE has nothing to do with Buxton being nimble or able to be healthy. He’s never been healthy (one year) through 9 seasons. He didn’t go from 28 to 34 ……he’s 30 and a tremendous athlete. He’ll catch plenty of fly balls! Now, his health and inability to Post is a huge concern!!! His WAR, just like everyone is connected by productivity and playing time. He hit 17 HR in ‘23 & similar amount of doubles while playing in around 85 games. He was Hurt nearly all season. He has huge holes (which were magnified with no legs in ‘23) in his approach at the plate but if he can play 110 games - 40 at DH, he’ll be in mid threes for WAR…….almost certainly he’ll get near 1.0 WAR on defense in less than half the 162 games - that will get offset by his DH appearances. He seems positive and I do think the Management will protect him on some level. Need him to play CF in October!
  23. It seemed more than just a light tug - I gotta think 6 to 8 weeks because the Conservative Approach needs to be used with this tremendous asset. Too bad for the kid!!
  24. They may lean on Eddie more at 2B v. lefties as well. Your thoughts and the Docs are 100% - use Castro at 3B regularly, with Farmer occasionally. Martin or even Larnach are the guys I see…….definitely need an OF, as Castro’s availability will be consumed at 3rd.
  25. Nope. He hit 2B bag awkwardly and his next steps made it obvious something serious was wrong. Ha had already had an MRI before the end of the game. It is really too bad. Assuming 6 weeks plus ….,,maybe 8 weeks out of the line-up because they’ll error on side of precaution. Kid can’t get a break!!
