Who is keeping Camargo out of the lineup?
JD-TWINS replied to Riverbrian's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I just think they are afraid of what pitcher to start him with……when would it make sense? Having him DH instead of how Vazquez did the other day is absolutely mystifying. He’s easily worth a shot in that scenario! He may get a pinch hit opportunity soon. If Jeffers keeps hitting everyday, his time will come. ……,Martin didn’t see the field for a bit - he’s playing now after circumstances changed. Kepler & Wallner, with minimum expectations of .230 BA & Correa minimum at .260 & Lewis minimum at .280………..,without these guys and LEE being out, the Team can’t absorb Zero from those 5 guys. Looking to Camargo to fill any void isn’t the answer (I get he deserves a chance) ………how about Buxton & Vazquez & others picking it up a bit?- 51 replies

Who is keeping Camargo out of the lineup?
JD-TWINS replied to Riverbrian's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
He’s there to allow Jeffers to DH w/o risk. It gives them a comfort feeling and the ability to potentially pinch hit for Vazquez later in a game. Should another guy have his roster spot - certainly debatable with the shambles that is the present OF. Already have 3 guys to play 1B, so another HITTING outfielder is only option - don’t know who that may be in St. Paul ? He can only displace Vazquez in the line-up and putting him into a line-up that’s struggling probably isn’t optimal. I get the frustration with offense!!- 51 replies

Three Offseason Decisions Already Hurting the Twins
JD-TWINS replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Farmer is not expensive - the Team reverted back to 2021 Salary and chose to spend $25-$30M less than ‘23. It’s April - played 10% of the games. Farmer will level off in his performance at the plate. Santana was/is washed on the left side - could see that going in to the deal. He’s a defensive insurance policy if needed and a platoon guy on the right side as well as a pinch hitter on right side. He’s in the line-up too much due to injuries AND the fact that Wallner reverted back to high school level …….with Kepler & Wallner providing Zero - Santana has been penciled in since Kirilloff is in OF regularly or at DH…..,,can’t Trade him to a Korean team……no other takers! Julien not, nor will be, an option at 1B, SWR isn’t a savior but certainly deserves a shot. DeSclafani was a risk - Headrick being out hurt is hindsight criticism. After two years of Varland spot starting with mixed results, no reason to think he wasn’t/isn’t ready for a shot in the rotation…….Paddack needs to step up & they need to score ……have squandered at least one exceptional start each from Lopez - Ryan - Ober……….when starter gives up 1 or zero runs the Team needs to win!!- 144 replies

So Louie wasn’t good again Monday. Paddack got knocked all over tonight v. Orioles. IMO, they each get 1 more start and w/o improvement SWR has to be penciled in for 3 consecutive starts. Don’t know if Team has enough guts to Option Varland and put Paddack into the Pen? ……,it may be best option but who is then the 5th starter………stretch out Sands in short term? Gotta shake things up if Varland & Paddack don’t change immediately!

What’s the minimum duration after getting optioned down? Assuming it was to just give him 2-3 days off…….taking a look at Bowman in right situation? ……..maybe, Thielbar will pull another muscle? ……I know just one outing but his need to be almost perfect with command really worries me at age 37.

Well stated - can’t hit, better be able to field! Fundamentals, lack of, like on the loose throw from Martin can be a killer - simple stuff. Thielbar scares me going forward. Ober had a disastrous first start - since then he’s looked completely under control giving up 6 hits & one run over 11 innings in his last 2 starts. Tough no decision today.

Lots of misplays on both sides. Seems odd to give up down 4 runs. Glad a few guys contributed! 6 innings and one earned is a nice job by Ryan. 6 more innings from the Pen, starting 2 innings with a guy in 2nd and only giving up 2 is very respectable! Wallner jumped on an opportunity to at least establish some positive statistics. Second game SWR set them up with another solid start! Nice depth.

58-57 in mid-August in ‘23……….started 17-12 to achieve that. When the winning streaks come don’t really matter as long as team isn’t discouraged. Lee - Larnach - Correa - Kepler - Lewis ……addition of Martin……..all reasons to feel better about where we might be by Memorial Day. Wallner can’t hit .060 much longer! Julien has officially heated up. Staff sure seems stable top to bottom.
-
He’s gotta start Monday - so Varland isn’t moving to the Pen regardless of the 27th man rules. Guys are lined up to start on regular rest now. I guess Tonkin could be optioned, if legal? Bowman can’t go down because he’s got about an 85% chance of pitching Sunday. Nice job by SWR today! He’ll be back within another 3/4 weeks. Gonna need around 8 starts from him - that’s if everyone else holds together.
-
Santana has really disappointed from the right side of the plate! His role, with other’s health, was to hit from right side & provide defense as the situation warranted at 1B. Now he’s playing every inning - not cool. CC out 3-4 weeks could be a serious problem. Wallner - Jeffers - Santana have to contribute something!!…………Castro & Farmer will be playing regularly and need to help as well……obvious stuff here, I know.
-
With REPLAY there are no “fortunate” calls anymore……other than balls & strikes. I’ve watched maybe 6 games and have seen him throw out 3 guys, minimum. He’s only caught 3 of the games. He’s not a solid hitter any longer but he keeps working at it & if he hits .230 and plays solid defense he’s a good piece for the Twins……..IT IS EARLY, you’re right …………whether he was paid $4.5 million or $10 million it doesn’t change the rest of the Team’s roster………Correa’s salary (not complaining) is the restrictive number relative to a more robust, well rounded roster, offensively. CC’s salary & the decision to back up Payroll to 2021 level - $26M lower than last year are the restrictions.

Twins 2, Tigers 8: Sloppy and Lethargic in Detroit
JD-TWINS replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A little odd with the move to Castro? I guess, with 3 games in next 2 days, he wants to try and keep Jackson available…….another 6-10 pitches and he probably can’t be used today at all. There was no logical benefit to leave him in and maybe letting Vazquez play 3B lightened the mood in the dugout in a lost cause situation? Just precautionary & no harm done. Our bats are the problem, not the managing. Tonkin (I didn’t see every pitch) had 5 K’s and it looked like he had a couple scratch hits against him. Potentially, another reasonable depth guy? Can’t give up 2 walks in 2 innings though. Correa out of our mediocre line-up is the real issue after last night!! Gotta be 3 weeks minimum. ANY news on Lee’s back injury. Rehabbing yet. Any potential timing?……..same with Larnach?- 49 replies

Do Right Handed Hitters have Less Severe Platoon Splits?
JD-TWINS replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
There was a piece (maybe in Athletic? - Twins specific) maybe 5-6 weeks ago showing all “good” Twins that batted left handed. Maybe a dozen guys? Koskie - Kubel - Oliva - Carew - Morneau - Hrbek - Mauer and another 4-5 guys. Bottom line is it showed left handed hitters (article supported logic of platooning for lefties) had pretty big drops v. LH pitching. Oliva having a .690 OPS was telling! Carew was lower but still above average. ALL guys were lower v. LH pitching, some everyday guys were pretty significant drops. The premise was that guys see waaay more RH pitching while kids & learning & as young men and then through their careers. RH hitters get used to seeing RH pitching and are in a sink or swim situation their whole lives v. RH pitching. LH hitters see predominantly RH pitching and then in the Show the lefties they see more of, are professionals. Poor results. Wallner - Julien - name anyone batting left handed……..probably are never, regardless of fans just wanting “to give them a chance”, going to be effective or nearly as effective v. LH pitching. The platoon makes sense! ………similar stuff for RH hitters but more accepted maybe?- 49 replies

You have a competent left hander in the Pen & 2 of the Top 2-3 left handed hitters in the game coming (Seager is in the mix) up in Ohtani & Freeman. Absolutely the right move to not let a guy with “OK stuff” that relies a bunch on location and fooling hitters, to face these two a 3rd time in an hour and 15 minutes. Okert gave up one run to Today’s version of murderer’s row………gotta score runs!! Jackson gave up the 3rd & 4th runs…….if Ober gets through the inning facing 4-5 guys and no runs, they still lose.

Unfortunately, it can happen! It has happened for past few decades - probably going back to the start of the game? Umpires push themselves into the game, demanding respect. Not unlike “old school” approach in refereeing many sports. …….when I played basketball in the ‘70’s if one didn’t raise their hand clearly after being whistled for a foul, it could be a Technical. Things have changed!! Umps & Refs egos have not…..,they seem much more sensitive! I understand your point. Seems to me, there is already a system…..just needs further validation. Am pretty sure the “auto - zone” has been around in the minors at certain times for more than just one season. Seems to be a matter of time. I too prefer the human element, until there’s a terrible Ump that consistently struggles (Saturday) - then it’s a 180 to automation or at least some blend.

Obviously, Martin isn’t playing 1B. The hole is with the injury to Lewis, compounded by Lee & Larnach being hurt as well. They need an extra LH bat to DH……….Santana was NOT acquired to help out much at all from the left side and he’s reinforcing that truth. He’s getting way too many AB’s from left side that should be going to better players. My assumption is the logic is he helps defensively and with his years of experience, he gives them a better shot than a rookie?? I see Martin at 2B or in CF v. left handed pitching…..,,pinch running …….being available as needed. That’s really it for now. They aren’t starting him v. RH pitching unless injury dictates. ……..I agree, watching Margot get AB’s & Santana are both painful…..it’s 7 games though.

Can’t comment on Spring training intelligently. They were 17-12 March/April of ‘23 with mediocre offense………hopefully, they get something going a guy or two at a time. I do know Castro was tearing the cover off in Spring Training & it’s not translating so far.
-
Where does Miranda play? He’s played one, maybe 2 games at 3B. He’s not playing at 1B on Big Club. They need a LH guy at DH. Don’t see it at all.
-
He’s filling the roster in Lewis’ spot. Allowing Castro to play every day at 3B and still have OF depth, period, IMO. He isn’t up to lead the team. Most guys in the 13th roster spot around baseball aren’t huge contributors. My point is he’s not the answer to the offensive woes. Wallner & Kepler are #4 & #6 in our line-up and neither are batting .100! Our 4th - 7th BEST hitters are at .154 - .130 - .130 - .111 ……….so 6 “regulars” under .154. Our TEAM batting average is 30th in baseball in the .190’s. I can hear you and others now, “then give Martin a chance”……he’s not the answer & inserting him with expectations higher than what they have for veterans does not seem fair to Martin. Not time to experiment until they are much deeper into season than now. Unfortunately, gotta stay the course. Everyone is frustrated, to put it nicely.
-
#4) Not striking out routinely v. putting the ball in play with runners in scoring position would be a welcomed change. I think exit path - launch angle has VERY little to do with the Team’s success. Hurry the ball hard AND putting it in play is key! I know there is data to support your point. Kirilloff flew out to the track twice in one game and again in a second game and he tripled on a sharply hit ball on the ground past the first baseman in yet another game. He’s hitting the ball well at all different angles. Buxton had a double in the gap essentially on a ground ball with high exit velocity. Get the barrel on the ball and good things happen. Zero contact gets zero results. I just hope Max gets going in next week or two v. end of June, if then. Also, regardless of what he does from here through October, please don’t suggest a qualifying offer or some extension for him. I can’t take it anymore.

So, if you take away Ober’s 1 1/3 - 8 run debacle, the other 12 guy’s ERA is 2.26 to date. That’s with 4 guys out that were supposed to contribute in a big way. (DeScla, Duran, Thielbar, & Topa) If they were 4-3 v. 3-4 they would project to a record of 48-36 at some point in the future……everyone would be ecstatic then. One win difference makes all the difference through 4.3% of the season. The hitting has been pathetic - 10 guys at .200 or below. Something has to change but the season isn’t over. Just like the players, gotta keep our chins up!
