Bummer!! Gotta assume that without Lee even being an option at this point, Castro drops in - mixed with Farmer, at 3B. Need outfield depth with Castro potentially being at 3B more often than not. Martin can be infield & outfield depth - seems he’s the guy. Not sure if there is another hot hitting OF? I guess Larnach is a top option as well. Really don’t see Miranda as a practical replacement after not much, if any, time at 3B since his shoulder repair. We’ll know tomorrow morning I assume.

Interesting career paths for these two guys. Their movement around the game is pretty typical for many players (lots of injuries) - great it seems to be working out for them.

So, a prospect is essentially a zero chance, I think we would agree. Why some team would WANT a guy with Goodrum’s history is beyond anything that seems real. Paying for him (a suitor), after his past few seasons & then .103 BA or whatever this Spring just seems like a non issue for Twins mgmt.

I don’t believe, and I may be mistaken, that there is any chance of compensation when a guy is available as a pick-up off Minor League deal? The Twins get the option of putting him on 26-man if he gets an offer is what it sounds like. Really seems to be a moot point since it appears he’s not capable of playing in the Show over the past 5 years - IMO, he’s off to Korea after he asks the Twins for a release in the upcoming weeks.

How good are the Rangers going to be by August???? Top 2 guys - almost certainties for eventual success - that are shown here as ROY candidates. Couple them with last year’s youth, Jung & Heim. Then, Simien, Garcia, & Seager mixed into the Top 3 spots in the line-up……….wow!! Oh yes, deGrom - Scherzer - Mahle all expected back at various times from late June into early August……big wow!!! NL MVP - Mookie Betts may score 175 runs batting in front of Ohtani & Freeman! Just seems he will see very good pitches in nearly all AB’s because the guy in the bump has no choice. I think he was already 2nd or 3rd last year?………That said, with Betts & Ohtani in front of him, Freeman may have 160 RBI….,he’s pretty good as well.

Jhoan Duran Injury Sets Up Interesting Bullpen Scenario
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not even sure Jax will close in Duran’s absence - maybe? It seems to be a bit of a circular thought though, leaving Jax at the back end to “spring” Duran on opponents. Jax there because his ever improving stuff is dominant. IMO, seems a shuffling of chairs/roles just because it’s different. Jax’ upgraded stuff - his experience - should continue to play in high leverage situations from the 6th - 8th, while Duran anchors the 9th. I guess my thought is if they’re both dominant & it ain’t broke………..- 9 replies

Since we were going to trade for a front line pitcher …….in the fantasy world we sign Montgomery, I’m sure there’s 15 spots that could be considered to be cleared w/o hesitation. …….agree, doubtful though if it’s a scrap heap reliever pick-up.
-
Agreed with most here - not sure how anyone can overlook these 3? Julien is a very solid piece in the line-up. Jeffers has great upside and is coming off a really good year. Jax has been getting better for 2 full seasons and is a main cog in our Pen! Today with a runner on 2nd and one out, on a swinging bunt for Baltimore, Jeffers jumped out from behind the plate and easily had the batter at first by 60 feet……..instead, he tried to make the hero play by throwing a guy out moving to 3B……..safe! Now two on and still one out. Guy from 3B scores a couple pitches later on a Sac Fly. ……Can’t just hit - gotta be smart and make the right plays!!! Learning experience I hope.

Jung all year at 3B - their young catcher, Jonah Heim - new guys, Langford & Carter ……..all very talented offensively!! Those 4 coupled with Garcia - Semien - Seager ………potentially the best line-up in the game. Their pitching over the first 3-4 months will determine if they win 95 games or not. They have 3 rotation guys coming - if 1 or 2 work out they’ll be a Playoff terror for competitors. Not sure why the great lack of respect from media? Astros have a big core of winners - they will be tough to beat as well! Seattle still seems offensively challenged to me…..good pitching is nice for a game or maybe two but numerous runs wins a lot of games in post-season.

A Year Apart, Royce Lewis is in a Different Place
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He’s the core guy going forward……what people hoped Buxton to be. Not blue sky here IMO, if Buxton plays in 110-120 games with 60 or more in CF ………Correa has an average year, relative to his career stats………Lewis performs at 90% of ‘23 even while gathering more & more experience the line-up is scary. Maybe an obvious statement? If Kirilloff - Jeffers - Julien etc. are afterthoughts when considering the 3 above, the Club is going to be potent. In ’23 CC was hurt at least 80% of the season - Buxton only DHed & in 80+ games and was hurt essentially the entire season - Lewis played in 58 games. If they get average performance and 120 games plus from each of these guys I can’t see how one can’t be upbeat about the probable results! Lewis is key!- 14 replies

Lineup Carries the Weight of the World For Twins
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Took me a couple times back & forth but I think I follow………assuming Margot - Farmer - Thielbar are not extended….Santana not re-signed. Don’t understand your $6M at 3B in ‘25? Don’t see any realistic “out” with Vazquez. In any case, Team is around $128M this year & appears to be same next year as well ……..2023 was $154M. $26M/year to a guy like Montgomery for four years looks pretty affordable with the assumed upside he would bring to Team’s chances……he can opt out in year 3&4. Let’s do it tomorrow! $154 in ‘23 - $154 in ‘24 - $154 in ‘25 sure seems doable.- 35 replies

I agree - that last spot in the Pen is only one in question. Seems to be prudent to go with familiarity out of the gate - Sands. It’s not a good idea to have a guy coming back from injury and have him be doubtful. Can’t imagine Staumont is very confident at this point. Give him 3-6 weeks in St Paul and have some positive results before putting him on the mound for Big Club. I get he’s got experience and probably chomping at the bit to be back in the Show but it’s a Team thing. Everyone has looked decent and then not so good through Spring Training so it’s not all just in the past 3-4 weeks. Sands is a known, & a long guy in case of any of the starters having an early blow-up in April, is valuable IMO.

Definitely a difference in the two Divisions! Cleveland was competitive across the A.L. for a good portion of 25 years. Hargrove managed teams across to Tito’s clubs. Central is weaker as a whole but the Royals won the Series 10 years ago. The White Sox should be a competitive franchise - it’s not the Twins fault nor MLB’s that they are poorly run. Realignment just pushes the poor $$ or poor managed franchises around. The “weak” Twins were 14-5 against Houston, Texas, Philadelphia, & Arizona in ‘23 regular season. These were the last 4 standing………,and somehow they squeaked by the A.L. East power Blue Jays with a 2-0 record in the playoffs. A big part of the Jay’s recent issues is that Biggio isn’t a star hitter, Chapman’s production was a roller coaster, and Vlad Jr. didn’t push through lately to more than good. Also, specifically v. the Twins, Gausmann has not been very effective…….they game planned well against him in ‘23. The reduced Division play is a reasonable approach to leveling things! I like playing the Royals less and the Reds or Mets or Marlins or Dodgers more - more interesting!! IMO, if the Rays can be competitive in that Division annually for a pretty good stretch of time, it’s up to each organization to figure it out and deal with whoever is on your schedule………….nobody in the Central is sad for Jerry Reinsdorf in the Chicago market, gotta figure it out as an organization.

Twins Reassign Top Prospect Brooks Lee
JD-TWINS replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree on some mild improvement from right side as adequate to play every day. Guys now only play 140 games on the high end, even young guys. If he sits/rests v. LH pitching …..that’s 20 of the 40 games he would bat RH. Can’t really think of too many really effective switch hitters in the last 50 years? Maybe 5? My point, as yours, expectations/hope for excellence from both sides probably need to be tempered. -
Lineup Carries the Weight of the World For Twins
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buxton - $15M…..Lopez - $21M…..Correa - $35M …….Vazquez - $10M are the guaranteed $$ I guess? Paddack at what $$, maybe $6M ???…………$87M Ober - Ryan - Varland all at about $800K, or $2.4M. With arbitration guys included (less Thielbar) the Pen will cost about (8 guys) $12M Wallner - Julien - Lewis - Lee - Martin - Larnach - Miranda all on minimums, ($800K) so $5.6M total. Kirilloff - Jeffers - Castro all arbitration guys totaling $9M. That’s 25 guys totaling $117M Rotation check - Pen check - Catchers check - Platoon at IB check ……5 infield guys plus Martin & Castro flexing both OF & IF - 3 OF check. Room for, in need of, an OF to fill out the 26-man…….I’d stick with internal options & youth. Another $800K. That’s a conservative total if $118M - seem reasonable? Gotta sign a pitcher…..seems so!!! Depending upon success in ‘24, I guess the plan for excess $$$ above $118M could be spent on extending some of the guys they have in house & continue to build internally? Thielbar, Farmer, Santana, Kepler total roughly $25M & am assuming they are all gone - Lopez gets a $13M raise…….,back to an approximate $118M total again for ‘25.- 35 replies

Twins Reassign Top Prospect Brooks Lee
JD-TWINS replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unless somebody gets hurt seriously underperforms, he won’t be back until July or August at best. There’s nowhere for him to play at this point. The injury seems pretty mild. I still think he’ll rest Correa and Lewis later in the summer & DH some……….he doesn’t help with the platoon at 2B so Farmer keeps him off the 26-man potentially ……… hopefully, they may “help” another team by trading Farmer and prospects for an arm by the deadline? -
I think the concerns about Santana are not very serious, in that Kirilloff will start 80 games plus at 1B v. RH pitching. I do think Santana will not miss a start v. LH pitching and he’ll pinch hit often v. LH pitching and would probably center the game at 1B for later inning defense…..,,,he doesn’t hit RH pitching very well but he doesn’t K a lot and has a bunch of experience. I think he’ll be a .650 OPS guy from left side - not good, but OK in short bursts for defense from the 6th on if he pinch hits. I see him as a plus defender that was brought in as insurance, like Taylor was last year. They’ll use him if needed but Kirilloff will still have opportunities at 1B.

Okert & Funderburk are the only lefties. Thielbar may be back in the mix to be considered in 5-6 weeks. Duran is essential for good fortune in the Playoffs. Otherwise, I think the roster here works into the playoffs…..,,utilizing Pen guys and either Larnach or Martin as needed through August. Then they’ll look at a couple more guys in September.

Twins 2024 Position Analysis: Relief Pitcher
JD-TWINS replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Everyone performing poorly is not likely - everyone getting hurt that’s been hurt isn’t likely. Will guys have bad outings and miss some time, certainly. There are still 11-12 options that have reasonable ability on the Pen depth chart, regardless of their Spring results in ‘24. Do we think Buxton & Jeffers are going to have over 1,000 OPS+ because they do now in Spring Training? Your point, anything is possible.- 13 replies

Lineup Carries the Weight of the World For Twins

‘23 the Twins were #1 in starter innings into mid-August. Ended at #2 or #3 I believe. Not an issue if the starters pitch up to a competent level.- 35 replies

Lineup Carries the Weight of the World For Twins
JD-TWINS replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not sure it needs to happen that soon but a reasonable plan to have a guy working regularly in late May and into June for some use in mid-late summer. Not sure if Kuechel is upset about his post season treatment (a competitor just like all Pros) but he seems to be the best option with his recent connection with the Club.- 35 replies

I know the organization doesn’t want to spend more but Clevinger threw 131 innings in ‘23 and managed to compile a 9-9 record for the brutal White Sox. He threw 2 complete games, so there is some stamina. His ERA was 3.77 and his career ERA is 3.45. Ober in ‘23 was 8-6 with a 3.43 ERA in 144 innings. Ryan in ‘23 was 11-10 with a 4.51 ERA in 161 innings. Lopez in ‘23 was 11-8 with a 3.66 ERA in 194 innings. Odorizzi didn’t pitch in MLB in ‘23 ……didn’t pitch in ‘20……...he threw 104 & 106 innings in ‘21 & ‘22 with ERA’s of 4.2 & 4.4…….he’s a crap shoot at best and not someone to rely upon. At his best, he’s a 12 start depth guy IMO……does not give any feeling of value at this point in his career.

Louie Varland is Cleared For Take-Off
JD-TWINS replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He’s continually improving with time. IMO, he’ll have 2-3 starts per month of 3 runs or less through 5-6 innings & then he’ll give up 5 in 3 2/3. He’ll be more volatile than most established guys so his ERA may not reflect his value in most of the games. He’s a pretty good 5th option for any club. SWR & Festa being the depth pieces as needed are the bigger question marks - feel good about them but just a feeling - gotta see it work. -
He could DH 66 games I guess?
-
Agreed! The Batting averages will have us breaking Team records - I think the Twin’s marketing department were spitballing and sent their ideas to CBS & then they got printed. The starters shown would be 53-33…..are we a lock for World Series?
