  1. Great test to see if they can mentally handle the closer role. Also, a great test for the rest of the bullpen to see if they can step up to a higher level. Not everyone will succeed though. What a great nickname!
  2. My trip there is probably years away. Are there better weeks to go than others? Just assuming the first and last weeks of camp can be different than the rest of camp.
  3. As a team I'll agree. But look at the guys hitting .300 or better - Julien, Buxton, Correa, Kirilloff, Santana, Jeffers, Castro. And I'm not concerned about Lewis. Most have decent slugging %'s too. If we want to get concerned about spring training numbers, it's the corner OF's that have struggled the most.
  4. Pretty soon he's going to be the last man standing as Topa joins the others on the IL.
  5. 2023 - 2 homers in 76 AB's through May 12 in a league where hitters dominated.2 homers in 56 at bats through April 29 (hitting .161) in 2022. Obviously I'm cherry picking my dates and he takes off and kills the ball after these dates, often in bunches. He's a homer hitter, hitting 52 homers in 2022 and 2023. I get your point that his average is sometimes okay early. HIs homer swing is often not in the groove early and that is one of the main parts of his game. Hoping he finds his homer swing early this year. If Wallner only hits 2 homers in his first 50 to 75 AB's, are people ready to ship him to AAA?
  6. And with Baldelli green lighting steals, Gordon (in 34 games and 91 ab's) never stole a single base last year. Give me Castro over Gordon every day if I need a base stolen. We just disagree on the defense and that's okay. If the Marlins dare to play Gordon on the left side of the infield and he does well, I will change my opinion. Castro never made an error in 49 games in those positions last year. Super utility player is more valuable than utility player. Good discussion.
  7. The trouble is that the Twins seem to make it a self-fulfilling prophecy at times. The young lh hitters come up, face a lefty and go 0-4. They don't face another lh for a week and get another shot, maybe going 0-4 again. Other players are facing them much more often, at least out of the bullpen. I think some of us would like to give them more of a chance against lh pitchers as they need to adjust to MLB lh pitching. There's always a balance if a player doesn't perform but the Twins too quickly self-label guys as unable to hit same handed pitchers IMO. This is especially true if they were able to hit lh pitching in the minors.
  8. Brooks Lee replaced after the first AB according to the box score. No injury, correct??
  9. Wasn't Vargas a short-timer with the Twins........
  10. I'm thinking the Twins will keep a guy like Headrick or Sands around as the long reliever, like in past years. You can't burn up most of the pen on a day like today when the starter is leaving early.
  11. Noticed you left out what really makes the difference between the two - stolen bases and defensive stats.
  12. And won! With some of the best starting pitching we've ever had.
  13. Glass half full - Lopez, Ryan and Varland are workhorses and will be ready every start. Paddack's and Ober's injuries are behind them and Paddack will only be internally limited by total innings pitched. Festa and SWR will be ready and pitch okay. Glass half empty - Lopez hasn't pitched well this spring, Ryan got hurt last year, Varland is a rookie, Paddack's and Ober's injuries will return. Festa and SWR aren't ready yet. Our bullpen will return to having to cover 4-5 innings per game like in 2022 and will fade as the season goes on (the bullpen was taxed in 2022 but I don't think they actually faded, if I remember correctly). I believe we could use Lorenzen for depth. I think we have reached the internal cap limit. That is, until July. If we are in contention, I believe there will be an additional amount that can be spent at that time.
  14. There is zero chance of him starting the year in AAA. He is one of the most valuable Twins with his speed, defense and position flexibility.
  15. The Twins are not going to throw Julien in at 1B now after working so hard with, and with improvement made, at 2B. They would be playing him there, which they haven't. And they would be playing Lee at 2B, which they haven't. The other possibility is 3B with Lewis in the OF. Again, that hasn't been done either. Wallner is a notoriously slow starter every season. I am now open to the possibility that the Twins decide to let him get hot with the Saints before calling him back up. But I think that means that Larnach gets the chance first. Still think the hitters are set with Wallner but he may change that.
  16. Clearly, you are cherry picking as some bad 1st round picks are offset by great picks like Julien and Ober, etc. in late rounds. The Lewis pick was criticized by some but it turned out to be right. This discussion has been had numerous times over the past couple of years.
  17. Wallner, no. But don't expect great things in April. Notoriously slow starts almost every minor league season. I always said it was moving up levels but maybe it's mostly that it takes him forever to get in the groove. Margot - probably not, changed teams, still getting adjusted (though I would have taken Taylor at $4 million and kept Noah Miller) Kepler - yes, just because he's had entire seasons of not hitting well. Veteran though so I'll still say spring training doesn't matter for him. That is the key. We have two pitchers who haven't pitched and other teams are losing pitchers for months or all season. Overall, spring training only matters who guys trying to make the team and the AAA guys trying to impress the coaches. In that category, the box scores are showing Lee hitting well lately with several doubles.
  18. Miranda's job in 2024 is to crush the ball and improve his defense with the Saints. He needs to be doing that so he gets the call if an injury creates an opportunity with the Twins. When Miranda was called up, supposedly his defense was okay to below average. With the Twins, it was bad and didn't improve (unlike Julien who was supposedly bad on defense, showed he was bad on defense with the Twins at first and then improved as 2023 went on). Without injuries on the Twins, Miranda is getting ready for 2025, to force the Twins to open a spot for him because of his hitting and improvement on defense.
  19. Cole, Gioloto, Williams, etc. Wow, MLB pitchers are dropping like flies.
  20. With the numerous off days early in the season, I still wouldn't be surprised if Varland goes to St. Paul so he can get one start there (unless we really want starters with 6 to 7 days rest between starts early in the season). And then he would come back about two weeks into the season. Ober had a great spring last year and he still went to AAA for 1 or 2 starts. DeSclafani not pitching yet certainly points towards an IL stint and rehab assignment in St. Paul. Thielbar probably has a little more time since he's a reliever but no sight of him either.
  21. Maeda was 2nd in the Cy Young voting with us. I think you make this trade every time if you are the Twins. The amount we paid Maeda allowed us to have room in the payroll to add others in prior years. You pray for good health throughout his contract but with pitchers, it doesn't always happen.
  22. Camargo will definitely return. The odds of the Twins having no injuries at catcher for two straight years aren't high.
  23. Sounds like you are confident that Buxton will stay in CF. Wouldn't that be great.
