Is Matt Wallner Still a Viable MLB Bat?
FlyingFinn replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, Wallner is a viable bat. But look at his minor league career, at his first 50 AB's each year. Except for one year, he is a slow starter. Would we be okay if he doesn't hit great in his first 50 AB's (he's far from great right now). He heats up with the weather. Because of his poor ST numbers, I even pondered if the Twins should start him out with the Saints and most on TD thought I was nuts. I do think he needs to go to the Saints but bring him back up when he heats up (and works on his weak area as others have stated). -
Twins Minor League Week in Review (4/15): Settling In
FlyingFinn replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
E-Rod and Cespedes are the hitters with great starts with Keashall and Chourio playing well. Prato has an OBP of .500 wtih 12 walks already. Injured list has a bunch of guys I would like to see - Jenkins, Lee, Helman, Canterino, Headrick, Cory Lewis, and Prielipp. The Twins getting healthy will make the Saints better as well.- 4 replies

Minor League Report (4/14): St. Paul's Bats Come Alive
FlyingFinn replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Culpepper with a nice first start. Can we just send him, Morris, and Matthews to Wichita and do all piggy-back games rather than ever using the Wind Surge bullpen. Yikes, we have a bad bullpen in Wichita.- 13 replies

Castro, Farmer, and Margot have been huge disappointments so far this year. At a minimum, they have to play good defense. They are all turning outs into hits (because the Detroit scorekeeper is so biased towards giving Tigers players hits on anything).

E-Rod was 3 for 5 with 5 BB's vs. Frisco as well, a team that is 6-2. Springfield is 8-0. So those teams are 7-1 against other opposition. SSS but it was a little more than just Springfield.

Resolving the Apparent Infield Logjam
FlyingFinn replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I didn't really like the package we got for Polanco but Julien is better than Polanco right now. Julien's defense has improved and Polanco's range has decreased. Polanco's stats so far (SSS I know) - batting .176 with 1 homer, 6 BB's and 20 K's. I'm not sure Mariners fans are happy with the trade.- 133 replies

Twins Minor League Report (4/11): A Night for the Andrews
FlyingFinn replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Andrew Morris is looking good. It could be a good battle to see who gets promoted first - him, Zebby Matthews or CJ Culpepper. E-Rod won it for the Kernels in the championship last year. He beat the Yankees in spring training 2023 with a homer. He sure seems to have a flare for the dramatic and clutch situations don't seem to faze him. Kind sounds like Royce Lewis, and the Twins could sure use more clutch players. Sorry to see De Andrade go down.- 9 replies

Anyone know if his fielding is good or not? Errors don't tell everything in the minors but I see he's made plenty of them at 3B. Less errors at 1B and 2B.

Can we have this posted in the Twins locker room! May as well post this in the locker room while we are at it. Matthews hitting 97 mph. Kernels fans had better go see him pitch soon. He's going to be in Wichita before you know it.

Where is the Cedar Rapids article? Not sure how Ryan Jensen gets pitcher of the day for his one inning of work. Zebby Matthews pitches 5 shutout innings with 8 K's and 0 BB's. The middle of that Kernels order had a great night with Olivar and De Andrade combining for 5 hits. But Rubel Cespedes stole the show - 4 for 5 with 7 rbi's including a 2B and HR. What's a guy got to do to get hitter of the day? He's never been talked about as a prospect with a chance to make MLB and repeated low A last year (.233 average with 13 HR's but 101 K's).

Dodgers 6, Twins 3: Too Little, Too Late
FlyingFinn replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The positives - Martin had a great night. Correa and Kirilloff are playing well. Alcala isn't injured and pitched. Bullpen is looking good without a lot of guys that we planned on. That's about it. Need a lot more hitters to do something.- 44 replies

Twins 26- & 40-man Roster Moves - 2024
FlyingFinn replied to Danchat's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Brigham had to leave his last game and is on the Il, for what it's worth. But @stringer bell is exactly correct about the upcoming Thielbar plans and a likely Tonkin DFA, hoping to get him to St. Paul. -
The players that have come up with the robo umps/challenge calls really know the strike zone, even better than some of the umps. I'm curious, are the new umps that come up through the system also better at knowing the strike zone? Or are they worse because they relied on robo umps too much? Just curious. Your take above is the same thing I see in tennis. They run the replay. The ball is in or it is out and not a single person complains. Every TV network should get the same strike zone template for each batter. The differing zones for size of batter is the thing that makes it different than tennis.

Doncon has to hit much better than Miller. The hitting for power skill is the only thing he is better at (batting average for their careers are .239 vs. .220). He plays some SS but he won't be there if he ever makes it to the Twins. Defense, speed, arm all favor Miller by a wide margin.

Kepler - many of us aren't surprised that he is performing just like he did for 2.5 of the last three seasons. Hope he figures it out again.
