My biggest offer to this guy would be about 6 years for $120M total. His 2018 season wasn't all that great, and I'd be concerned he'll have some troubles with strikeouts, plus I wouldn't want to pay this guy into his middle to late 30s like some offers have. I'm predicting he's going to go down as one of the biggest FA busts in MLB history, but I should wait to see the mega-deal he's going to sign.

Article: Standing Pat as a Strategy
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That doesn't justify overspending. Just because bargains didn't work last year doesn't mean they won't this year. Hopefully they will make a couple bigger signings alongside some cheaper moves. I do think they're going to get one higher-tier reliever like Familia. -
Article: What's the Plan with Tyler Austin?
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm torn because while I want the Twins to make some signings and add a good bat to the team, I'm just not sure about Cruz. But I'm also not sure about Austin, but he's a young guy with the potential to be a solid starting 1B while Cruz is 38 and on the decline. But the Twins added Cron and they've seemingly made an offer to Cruz... so it seems to me that Austin is the odd one out, and I'm not sure I agree with that. I hope we don't end up with another bad free agent deal where it turns out we just should have committed to Austin... and in this context the Cron claiming is also odd, because it seemingly ruled out a Cruz signing. I'm confuzzled. -
2019 Minnesota Twins Top 15 Prospects- Off The Baggy
Danchat commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Nice list, I don't really see any egregious choices here. I also agree that Alcala profiles as a reliever and I think they need to transition him to the bullpen ASAP. Plus we could use some more relief prospects because all the recent ones are busting. I will say that #7 seems high for Wade, who seems like more of a 4th OF in the bigs. Maybe a Grossman-like career.- 10 comments

Article: Twins Sign 2B Jonathan Schoop
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I dunno, Murphy's poor fielding compared to Schoop's above average fielding makes it pretty close. With the team the way that it is, I'd rather go with the younger Schoop (27) than Murphy (34). On a different note, I wonder what the Twins' chances are of extending Schoop if things go right? Maybe he'll enjoy his time here and the Twins will offer him a competitive deal. I wouldn't assume he goes right out the door in free agency if he hits well. We haven't seen this FO deal with a situation like that quite yet. -
Article: Twins Sign 2B Jonathan Schoop
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Eh, it's a fine deal. Schoop was only going to take a one year deal, and I like the upside that he could bring. He's still young and could improve as a hitter. Defensively, UZR has him ranked 37th out of 82 2B who played at least 100 innings. DRS has him ranked 17th out of 82. So he's definitely a better defender than Dozier was last season, so he'll be a step up there. At this point I can see Falvey and Levin crossing their fingers that either A) Schoop will rebound and return to being a top 10 2B or B: Nick Gordon figures things out and pushes Schoop at 2B. I would have preferred Marwin Gonzalez, but this isn't a bad alternative. -
Article: Twins Sign Infielder Ronald Torreyes
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems like a good deal to me. Last year we had zero depth at AAA when it came to infielders, now they have another body there who should hit better than Motter and Petit. He's got a high batting average but an awful OBP, this dude never walks. He ranked 32nd out of 82 guys who played at least 100 innings at 2B according to UZR. DRS has him 21st/82. So he's good defensively, mediocre bat, only 26 years old... I'd just rather keep him at AAA, but we'll probably need him at some point due to injuries. -
Article: What's There to Say About Ehire?
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He's a fine backup-(f)utility player who won't embarrass himself, unless he's trying to take home when he should be staying put at 3rd base. His bat has been better than I expected, though his defense in 2018 was disappointing compared to how he had played in the past. Let's try not to give him 300+ PAs again, alright? -
I don't see how hiring Falvey and Levine has anything to do with the payroll rank... what, were there some potential GMs out there would have forced the Pohlads to spend more money so they didn't hire them? I highly doubt it.

Fair enough, but my problem is that teams overpay guys who "should" be good help. Lance Lynn and Yu Darvish looked like solid bets and they weren't. This year, Patrick Corbin and Nathan Eovaldi look like good bets, and the Twins would be lauded if they gave Corbin $120M, but I doubt either of the two will live up to their contracts. I don't want move that will satisfy the crowd, I want deals that will actually improve the team. Even if it means making unpopular moves like picking up Anibal Sanchez.
-
Really? They've claimed one guy off waivers and several teams have made zero moves thus far. There is a ton of time for things to happen. Oh, and do you remember how Twins Daily's general opinions regarding the offseason have usually gone? 2016 Offseason - "They only signed Jason Castro! We're gonna lose 100 games again!" Result: The Twins were close to clinching a wildcard spot, finished above .500 somehow 2017 Offseason - "The Twins failed to sign Yu Darvish and haven't picked up anybody - only the awful Anibal Sanchez ! It's a failure of an offseason!" Result: Avoiding Darvish was a godsend. Sanchez pitched great for Atlanta... whoops. 2017 Spring Training - "We signed Logan Morrison, Addison Reed, and Lance Lynn for cheap! We can win the division this year!" (I'll admit I was on this bandwagon) Result: All three players were major flops and contributed to a poor season 2018 Nov/Dec - "We shouldn't have claimed C. J. Cron!" Do we really have any idea how things are going to play out? I'm at the point where I'm going to expect the opposite of what seems reasonable to us.

I like some of the options that have been non-tendered - I think there are a few bullpen arms that could be scooped up for a decent price - Blake Parker, Hunter Strickland, and Alex Wilson would be nice complementary options.

Article: Arbitration Decisions Looming
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think many fans got sick of how many times he reached 100 pitches in the 5th inning. Plus there was a stretch over the summer where many of us wanted him demoted due to a few short starts... the lack of good starters makes Odorizzi look better than he actually pitched, but I will concede that he is a asset they should retain.- 54 replies

Article: Arbitration Decisions Looming
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With Cron getting tendered, I can't see Grossman getting tendered. Other than being a liability in the outfield and being fit best for DH'ing, his bat just isn't that good. Check out his 2018 splits: Grossman 2018 March to August 5th: .253/.332/.365 (.697 OPS) Coming off DL August 21th-Sept: .319/.442/.429 (.871 OPS) Nearly all of Robbie's 2018 hitting production came when the season was already over and the Twins were facing some bad pitchers from the Central division in late August/September. He had a .649 OPS from March to the end of June. I'll pass, we already have two 1B/DH guys who should both hit better than Grossman in 2018. OBP is good, but not at the cost of bad defense and little baserunning ability.- 54 replies

I think the upside is a solid .800 OPS+ hitter at 1B or DH. I also think of it as a backup plan for that position... many here keep saying the Twins need a backup plan for Buxton and Sano at CF and 3B, but we have zero established starters at 1B/DH, so why not add some depth? If Austin hits .200 with a bagillion strikeouts, then Cron could step up and fill in better. I suppose it does mean the Twins are going to concede a bit in free agency, but I'm not excited about the 1B/DH market at the moment. I guess in that perspective the move is a bit disappointing, but outside of Cruz, who is there? Move Daniel Murphy to 1B? Matt Adams? Boy, there just isn't much else. Perhaps better options exist in the trade market.

Article: Twins Claim 1B CJ Cron
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Rays won 90 games... just because nobody goes to their games and they play a sort of moneyball doesn't mean they are "average to below average". That's actually a great description for what the Twins are. What makes this dumpster diving? They're claiming a 2.0 WAR player off of waivers. Is any waiver claim a dumpster dive then? I guess the Dodgers were simply dumpster diving when they found Max Muncy on waivers, the Pirates dove for Corey Dickerson last year on the DFA market, and so on. You don't even have to keep the guy once Spring Training is over, so what's the big deal? Should they just not ever claim anybody on waivers? -
Article: Twins Claim 1B CJ Cron
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Boy, I'm surprised to see how much debate there's been over this move. It just makes too much sense to me to claim this guy for nothing and pay him $5M. The only thing the Twins have at 1B/DH is a post-hype prospect who's out of options... they can rotate at 1B and DH, there's plenty of room for the two of them. They don't have a DH option at the moment and I doubt they're signing Cruz. I think it's smart to have two guys with decently-high upsides. I thought Twins Daily's thoughts on Tyler Austin were that he wasn't ready for a starting job and he strikes out too much... but it seems he has a lot more supporters than I thought. 2019 is going to be a big season for him. -
Article: What To Make of Addison Reed?
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think we'll know quickly into the 2019 season whether Reed is back to what he was. Those radar numbers will be important to monitor. It's also really weird to see that Reed is the highest paid player on the team. I know he won't be for long, but his $8.5M salary is the highest on the team at the moment. -
Article: Twins Add Gordon, Wade, Arraez To 40-Man Roster
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess getting something for Anderson is nice, because the Twins probably weren't going to use him. It stinks to see Busenitz sent off to Asia already, but he just wasn't cutting it here. There goes the last piece of the Nolasco-Santiago trade... until Alex Meyer recovers from his shoulder surgery in 2020.- 113 replies

Agreed, I see Arraez as the only guy left that they need to get protected. I don't think we're in danger of losing anybody worthwhile after that.- 113 replies

I think some of the Twins media/fans are a bit too afraid of change. I mean, why not go young and give it a shot? We've stunk for years now, why not try something new? Having an experienced coaching staff sure hasn't done much for us the past 8 years or so, and other teams are setting trends with new-age coaching and strategies. We'd best not fall behind the curve.

I like Decalsco a lot and he might come cheap. I don’t like Galvis’ numbers. LeMahieu isn’t that great of a hitter for a 2B, signing him looks like a trap to me unless you get him cheap.

The 60 Million Dollar Team: We can rebuild it, we have the technology
Danchat commented on PSzalapski's blog entry in A View from the Slot
Great article, I really liked the format. This reminded me of the 2018 Midseason evaluation I did a few months back. I did a very similar WAR comparison, and your final results seem pretty similar to mine. Some thoughts: - Losing Castro really hurt this team, especially defensively. It helped that Garver's defense improved, but trotting Bobby Wilson out there so often hurt this team. We really needed Castro's top 10 defense + the .240 w/ 10 HR bat that he had, even as mediocre as that sounds. - Unfortunately, the 1B, 2B, 3B, DH, and CF situations all continued to decline from their 2017 spots. At the moment, the only hope we have for those positions are to cross our fingers for Sano & Buxton and hope Tyler Austin kicks things into gear. They need as much help as they can get there. - Jake Odorizzi's WAR looks too high, especially compared to Gibson's. Just by the eye test and my recent memory, Gibson was a way better starter and chewed up a lot more innings than Jake did. - The Twins need to figure out how to develop relievers in the minors better. It seems year in and out they find their best guys by either one year deals or through dumpster dives. Why can't one of Busenitz/Hildenberger/Moya/Curtiss/Duffey figure things out? They need to try moving more starters to the bullpen, that strategy seems to work more often than not.
