  1. I said after the draft that he reminds me of Brent Rooker, and I'm still thinking that, but I think he'll end up as a better contact hitter than Rooker will be. I'm predicting he'll have a year in the minors where his power will develop and he'll hit 20+ HRs, but I'm not sure if this is the year.
  2. I don't see Duda making the team unless injury strikes, though I am of the opinion that Austin will be hanging around on the roster. I'm not sure about Nick Gordon anymore... he might end up as a utility infielder with the way things have gone - not great SS defense, power hasn't developed, not great OBP skills... yikes.
  3. I think one problem some of us (me) might have had is we see really good numbers in the minors, so we assume that'll transition in the majors. I remember being excited to see how AJ Achter would pitch with the Twins after a very good minor league career, but he simply didn't have MLB caliber stuff.
  4. Nice, digging up my old posts and using them against me! I probably should be more patient, though I will defend myself with these two points: 1: I didn’t know Gonsalves topped out at 91 and regularly threw pitches in the upper 80s 2: Gonsalves developed a command problem this season, not sure if that will continue So yes, I do think he’ll pitch much better in year two, but he has several issues to address. Anyways, thanks for keeping me accountable.
  5. They should focus on having him learn how to play 1B, as he'll be a poor fielder in the outfield if he ends up playing there.
  6. I understand your argument, but at some point there has to be a balance between stuff and statistics. I was disappointed to see that Gonsalves tops out at 91, doesn't have pitches that can strike out MLB hitters, and also has poor command. It's not that I've totally given up on him, but he looks to be a 5th starter or a decent reliever if things go right in my eyes. He's done a great job in the minors, but unlike Berrios I don't know if his stuff will let him be more than a AAAA pitcher. Conversely, if Duran can put things together, he has the stuff to be a great starter. I could see him being a #2 starter if everything goes right, though mostly throughout his career, it hasn't gone right.
  7. The pitch clock is a no-brainer, and I don't see why not for a 26th spot. While I'd like a universal DH, I think the NL purists are still too many at this point and they would not like the change. Not sure about that anti-tanking rule, the draft is already a crapshoot so I don't think that would be a good idea... are you thinking something like the NBA draft lottery or whatever it's called?
  8. I've heard Wilin Rosario is a pretty poor catcher (defensively), so I understood that he was a 1B/DH, and only added as organizational depth. 3 years $45M is a bit much for a reliever, but the Twins have so much cap room in future seasons, I can't say no to that deal. I suspect he will underperform compared to expectations, but at this point we need to improve the bullpen any way we can, so I'd be on board for that.
  9. His presence was felt immediately? You mean how they won 13 more games after he was fired? I agree with part of what you said, but firing Gardy was the right move and it that seemed like our first move from stepping away from the "country club" feel this team had. I do think Molitor was a poor manager, but I think you're overestimating how much he affected the team. Retroactively it would have been nice if the team would have started the rebuild from 2014 on, with a new front office and outside hire as the manager. Kinda feels like TR was treading water by hiring Molitor and hanging on for a couple more years.
  10. I agree that Granite has great range in the outfield, but his "far superior defense" is partially negated by his arm. He has a weak arm and won't be able to throw out runners going to third or home. Plus I think some here might have soured on him due to some of the most head-scratching plays we've ever seen - throwing to first base when the runner was going home and nobody was there at first to catch the ball, and Granite also forgetting to step on first when running out a hit in a playoff game.
  11. I think he needs to hit better at AAA first. I think he has a similar ceiling to Cave (4th OF). Granite and Reed are fine for depth, but I don’t think the Twins need either of them.
  12. Nice, it turns out his cousin is CB Nickell Robey-Coleman, the guy who didn't get called for the obvious pass interference penalty a couple weeks back... but outside of that, he's one of the best nickel CBs in the game. Nick sure has some talented relatives!
  13. Wow, this is quite a list! Daniel Palka's answer was my favorite. Who is Nick Gordon's cousin on the Rams?
  14. Sounds like he'll get a chance at the rotation, but he'll likely end up in the bullpen. If they decide to do anything with openers, he'll probably be a primary pitcher.
  15. At least Walmart is successful, right now this seems the Twins are more like Kmart.
  16. I still don't get this move, but I guess if you wanted the 5th rotation spot to be held by a veteran, there you go - have fun with that 6.22 ERA and 5.5 K/9. I guess the Twins will try to sneak De Jong to AAA, not sure if he'll make it. He wasn't much of a prospect, but I rather would have seen him throw innings than Perez.
  17. And hopefully, when the rookies get promoted from the minors, they won't play as terribly as they usually do. That's what I hope changes soon.
  18. I dunno, when it comes to a more marginal prospect, trading them at their peak value would be a good idea (one example I can think of is the Yankees shipping us Littell after a great season at AA). But when it comes to a guy like Kiriloff... nope. I'd hang on to the prospects with star potential, and once we're contenders, we can talk about acquiring guys like Realmuto with high-level prospects.
  19. A trade is worth looking into, but I don't think this team should be trading away one of their 3 "super-prospects" for two years of a great catcher. If you're thinking about sending a package of the lower tier guys like Rooker/Larnach/Enlow/Duran/Gordon/Garver, then I'd be more supportive of it. With the Buxton/Sano core tipping towards "bust" and the front office not making any moves to acquire MLB talent, I don't think it makes sense to do the move with a team that doesn't look primed to win now.
  20. Eh, I'd give the free agent additions a "C" because of A) Perez being slotted for the rotation and B; no additions to a weak bullpen. There's still plenty of time for them to add a guy and there are several solid options out there... You'd be surprised, plenty of fans will care that the payroll is just $100M. The common fan may go from criticizing the Mauer deal to "why aren't you spending that money that you finally freed up?!"
  21. It's funny that you bring up Correia - Perez is actually very comparable to him with the low K/9 and high WHIP - so I think Perez's signing is incredibly similar to the Pelfrey/Correia signings, especially with news that the Twins plan to use him in the rotation. It's great that he's 'only' 28 years old, but he's been a bad starter for several years now. At least Correia had a better BB/9 as a Twin! On the flip side, I do think the Schoop signing has a lot of upside and most everyone is too concerned that it's a one year deal. He's only a year removed from a 5.2 WAR season, and a repeat of something close to that would give this squad a major boost. We need more moves like this and less like Perez.
  22. Hopefully not, and if he moves to the bullpen he should gain a tick in velocity and he should end up much better than Duffey. I still don't understand what happened with Duffey - he has a great half season as a rookie starter, declines and gets put in the bullpen, and since then he's gotten worse. He should be considered an outlier... but with the way development has gone here, I can't say that for sure.
  23. Stewart has 3 options years, so unless they're DFA'ing him for some reason, the Twins shouldn't be losing control of him anytime soon.
  24. Nice article, I'll keep my eyes peeled for Stashak. I think Alcala could see similar leaps and bounds if/when he's transitioned to the bullpen, as I don't think he should be a starter. I'm intrigued to see more of De Jong, as I thought of the young pitchers (Gonsalves/Littell/Stewart) he did the best. I'd rather see him start games than Martin Perez... but maybe he could end up filling the Anthony Swarzak role of being the long reliever/opener. Here's hoping the bullpen prospects can finally find some success in the majors!
  25. It's odd, I suppose people would rather prefer that we A) try as hard as possible to compete for start tanking, but instead they're staying stagnant... it's hard to say much about this team. It feels like they're pretending to compete while hoping they can trade these one year deals at the deadline for more assets. And if that's the case and they're hoping for their own prospects to come up and do some damage, then let's make some trades and do something! Standing pat just doesn't seem right.
