  1. Glad I'm not the only one who thought Anderson and Reed coming up should have been slam-dunks.
  2. I'm hoping he can be a MLB regular by 2020 and maybe he can come up and dominate unlike the rest of our prospects? I wasn't sure about this guy before this year, but wow, you can't help but appreciate those numbers.
  3. Whoops, for some reason, this whole time I've thought Wiel was a 2B. That certainly puts a damper on Wiel's prospects as his numbers would be nice for a 2B but not quite as good for a 1B/corner OF.
  4. I would have liked to see Wiel get his first crack at the majors instead of see Petit again. I guess you can't have enough AAAA players on the roster...
  5. They acquired something called "prospects" for all the players we traded away. Have you seen Tyler Austin play? He's looking pretty good. Would you rather have all those vets still here in that disastrous game yesterday and get nothing for them as they hit FA? I can't say I'm a huge fan of the front office but they did the right thing at the trade deadline.
  6. We're back to total system failure, folks. This wouldn't be so surprising if the 2017 didn't happen and we went straight from 2016 to 2018. It's hard to believe we're only 6-7 weeks removed from talking about a possible playoff run... I'm done with Duffey. Let's see if Jake Reed, Nick Anderson, and John Curtiss have anything to bring to the table instead. We've got room to bring them up.
  7. Boy, it's kinda hard to say many positive things about this team. Berrios is regressing, Sano is looking bad again, and basically every Twins-system rookie is looking awful upon their arrival to the majors. Only the Yankee-system rookies are looking any good... it's like there's some sort of sickness in the water in the minor league pipeline. Vasquez topped out at 90? So is his slider his bread-and-butter and that's going to be his key to success?
  8. Worth noting: So is John Curtiss not getting called up? And what about Reed and Anderson?
  9. I'm not sure why we're worried about IF they'll spend it when the primary problem has been spending WISELY. They splurged last year, going over what most thought the cap was, and Reed, Morrison, and Odorizzi (not a FA but was traded due to $$$ problems for the Rays) have mostly failed. Signing Darvish would have ended as a travesty in year one of the deal. Spending money just to spend it isn't a strategy I like. Make wise deals if you can and save your cash if the deals out there are too risky. I want the team to win games, not spend money to appease the fans who can't stand the 'penny-pinching' Pohlads.
  10. Oh, I certainly haven't forgotten that. The problem for me is that Berrios had the stuff and Gonsalves doesn't seem to. I believe that Stephen will figure out his command problems because outside of 2018, he hasn't struggled with that. However, I'm not sure if his fastball is going to be good enough. I had him pegged as a #4 starter in the majors and I wondering if he's more of a fiver now... I don't quite agree, I think Gonsalves will be a better starter. Methinks Stewart could be a decent bullpen arm, but I just can't see him as a starter. He has the 95 fastball and nothing else.
  11. For September call-ups: Belisle will be activated from the DL (*ugh*) and Curtiss is expected to be called up as well.
  12. For the call-ups tomorrow, I expect Littell, Curtiss and Duffey (mentioned by Molitor), De Jong, and Field to be called up. Buxton's his own debate, Romero should but I have no idea what the plan is there, and Thorpe could too if they want to start his clock. For non-40 man options, I think Nick Anderson deserves a shot. Same with Jake Reed, I like their numbers at AAA. I'll pass on Baxendale and Bard. Gordon and Wade aren't ready yet. EDIT: Andrew Vasquez is getting a call-up. I didn't foresee him arriving quite yet because he's barely pitched in AAA, but he's dominated A+ and AA. That's quite the leap from where he started the season!
  13. Why not, at least we don't have to see Wilson at the plate anymore. Astudillo is the backup catcher now as far as I can see.
  14. He's our starting center fielder at AAA right now, not in the majors on a team that has given up and is playing young guys. He's been doing well for a tiny sample size, so now he's good to go? Methinks if you bring Buxton back up and play him every day he's going to hit .160 again, but perhaps not. The extra year of control is also intriguing... the only thing I can say is that the decision isn't cut-and-dry. Good article, Nick. I have the same mixed feelings on Mauer. I don't really want him back as a full-time starter next year as I think he will slightly regress from his 2018 season simply due to age, but he'd be great to have as a pinch hitter/platoon role player. Might need to carry 4 guys on the bench if that's the case, though.
  15. Can we get Mauer/Rosario/Polanco to hit right behind Austin? It'd be nice to turn these moonshots into multi-run HRs. Methinks the Yankees should have given him more of a chance at 1B, with Greg Bird hitting .199 with decent power. Yes, I know I sound like Austin's dad right, but right now it's sure looking like the Yanks could have used him.
  16. If we could see more 7 inning outings from Odorizzi, then I'd be on board bringing him back next season. Still, the bullpen found a way to implode in his longest start of the year. Time for Addison to hit the DL and see if he can come back for next season at full strength.
  17. My thoughts on Mauer are mixed... he's a great OBP hitter who is constantly getting on base, but he has no speed. He's a fantastic defender, but he brings almost zero power. He's also incredibly clutch (RISP), but he's almost always going to hit singles. I would be fine going either way with him. I'd be fine if they looked for an upgrade, but if they're thinking the future is Austin/Rooker/Sano?, then I could see one more year of Mauer. He's not a great player at this point, probably more of a "good" one. It sounds like Mauer wants to play next season, so I think he'll be back. I don't know if he'll be playing 1B as often as many want him to, though...
  18. The bullpen may be a hot mess now but we can’t say that for sure about 2019, so I can’t see how the trade was a ‘rookie mistake’.
  19. Odorizzi should really return to the Rays and take the "opener" gig. He could consistently give you 3-4 solid innings of work. I'm looking forward to Gonsalves' debut tomorrow, here's hoping he'll pitch better than most Twins rookie starters do. I think it's time to end the Duffey experiment. I'd rather see Jake Reed or Nick Anderson get some mop-up innings. For the first time in a while I don't have many complaints about the bullpen, they finally got Moya, Busenitz, and May up to the majors.
  20. Roster moves that should happen: Santana & Reed to DL, Stewart to AAA Gonsalves, Romero, and Busenitz/J. Reed/Curtiss called up. But I also know Grossman and Belisle (*gags*) are rehabbing, so Robbie will need a spot, but they aren't seriously going to put Belisle back on the MLB roster, are they?
  21. It seems like we go nuts whenever Joe hits a home run, they're so rare. That's not necessarily a knock against him, and he is great in clutch situations. I'd just like to see him hit one out of the yard more than once a month.
  22. I certainly don't see that in his stats from 2015-17 (4.56 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 9.6 H/9, 1.4 HR/9) plus he's also coming off of Tommy John surgery, which can take a full year after rehab to gain top form. I think he's a 3 at best.
  23. This Thorpe guy looks like he could be something special. I'm impressed with his numbers at AA, especially the number of strikeouts he's gotten. At his age and level of experience, I think he'll need plenty of seasoning in AAA. You could also say that about a lot of other Twins starters who are on the fringe. I'm going to repost my list of 2019 Twins starters in the current pipeline ranked by arbitrary starter "numbers". #1: None #2: Berrios, Romero #3: Gibson (up from #4), Thorpe (new) #4: Odorizzi, Littell, Pineda, Gonsalves (down from #3), #5: Mejia, Stewart (new) AAAA: Slegers, others I really like the depth here. I'm so very glad we can be done with the likes of P. J. Walters, Cole DeVries, Adam Wilk, and Tim Melville. There's a lot of talent that could use MLB auditions like Gonsalves, Littell, Romero, and Mejia's out of options next year. I don't feel like all of these guys are going to get their chances... perhaps we could see one or two packaged in a trade along with other prospects over the offseason?
