  1. Nothing, and I hope Mejia will be the 5th starter instead of Perez. Hopefully when the time comes to DFA Perez, he'll clear waivers (why would anyone claim him?) and they can stash him at AAA for depth, because that's all he should be.
  2. Perez was league average? How on earth was last year's 6.22 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and an unsightly 1.78 WHIP profile as average? He wasn't even replacement level last year, he was worth -0.9 (according to BBREF). Before then he was around 1.45 WHIP and 5 K/9... this is worth a minor league league and no 40 man spot, not over $3M in guaranteed cash. There are plenty of better options out there like Clay Buchholz and Gio Gonzalez, so if you're so dead-set on finding a new 5th starter, sign one of them.
  3. Fair enough, I think the problem is that most of the members here have lost faith in the development process. The Twins minor leagues have developed so few successful relievers in the past 8 years that we have zero hope for minor league relievers to make an impact on this team. I wish I could agree with you.
  4. This feels very similar to the Anibal Sanchez deal last year, but at least Sanchez was a good pitcher at one point. Even if you move him to the bullpen, I doubt he becomes a serviceable pitcher. Seems like a total waste of $3.5M to me. Hopefully he won't see much time in the majors, and if he does this isn't going to be pretty. I've done my best to stay positive this offseason, but I simply don't see any upside to this deal. I guess we can hope he'll magically pitch better now that he's a Twin. Yuck. Here's hoping Mejia can nail down the 5th starter job and hold it and not lose out to Perez.
  5. Nice article! I really like Nick Vincent, and I'm surprised to even hear he was a free agent. His numbers the past few years look pretty good and he would be a fine addition to the 'pen. Norris' numbers don't impress me. He gets a lot of whiffs but he's been around 4.00 FIP the past two seasons and will be 34, so he's near the back-end of the options IMO. I like Brach just like Vincent, either one would be fine. Warren had some really good numbers the past couple years in Yankee Stadium, but upon arriving in Seattle, he wasn't very good. I'd love to have him if he can replicate those numbers as a Yankee.
  6. I hope they don't give him too big of a workload because I'm concerned for him. He wasn't an MLB-caliber reliever for most of 2018 and I'm not sure if counting on him to be part of your 2019 rotation for the full season is a good idea. I thought he might start 2019 in AAA, but that seems far from the case... hopefully he'll rebound.
  7. Buchholz is an intriguing option, but the rest of the guys are the types where you cross your fingers and hope they pitch well. No thanks. If they want to add a starter, I'd look towards the trade market for somebody like Sonny Gray. But methinks the Twins won't be adding a starter until the trade deadline... if they're looking to add pieces, that is.
  8. These are good questions to be asking. I believe I read somewhere on Twins Daily this past season that the FO wanted Gonsalves to work on his secondary pitches because they feared his fastball wouldn't fare well against major league players. Combine this with the fact that his command was bad for the 2018 season, and it's no wonder he came up so slow. He just doesn't [appear to] have the stuff to get MLB batters to whiff at, so he's had to spend more time developing his pitches.
  9. Tyler Duffey, and don't think twice about it.
  10. Even with Parker's dip in velocit, he still got 9.5 K/9, so this isn't a classic Terry Ryan dumpster dive pitch-to-contact deal. Plus this deal should have an "option" - he'll be eligible for arbitration in 2020, so it can be used like a two year deal. I like this move if he's pitching in the 6th/7th innings and not in the tightest of situations - it's a depth improving move, and if they add a top-end guy and we see May develop too, he'll bolster our group nicely. I think he's an upgrade on what they were throwing out there last year in the non-high leverage roles.
  11. I think he debuts this season, at the latest by September if he isn't hurt or tanking in AAA. It'd be aggressive to say that'll he'll stick in the rotation after his first call-up.
  12. It'd be nice if Thorpe could crack the rotation at some point in the season and try to buck the trend of awful rookie seasons for starting pitchers in recent Twins history. If all goes well I think he can be a #3 pitcher, but perhaps #4 is a safer bet to make.
  13. This doesn't seem like sarcasm... do you honestly think this would work? Kiriloff has played two seasons in the minors with zero high minors experience, the same thing with Lewis... I don't understand what you're talking about. Not only are you starting the service time clocks on many prospects far earlier than what you should be, but you're going to be fielding several players who are clearly not ready for the majors, both with their hitting and fielding abilities. Do you really think it would be a great idea to play Gordon, Lewis, and Kirilloff for full seasons no matter how terribly they play? What happens when Gordon hits .170 and can't stop striking out, Kiriloff can't figure out major league breaking balls, and you figure out Lewis isn't close to being ready to playing SS in the majors? Not only are you going to lose 100+ games, you're going to ensure many prospects' rookie seasons are disasters. Reminds me of what the Padres were doing a few years ago calling up guys to play straight from A+ and watching them perform awfully. How about we call the prospects up when they're ready? Yeah, I know for some guys we wait longer than we should, but being rash about things can have ruinous results. Haven't we learned from fast-tracking Hicks and Buxton?
  14. Because said team is going through a dramatic rebuilding phase? Have you seen all the talent they've traded? Plus, there's no guarantee they'd get him on a team friendly contract.
  15. At the current moment, it'll probably just take one injury to get Astudillo back on the roster since he can back up C and the infield. I imagine he'll be taking a few trips between AAA and Minnesota this year.
  16. I'd like to go into 2018 with Romero as a starter, because I think he has the potential to be a really good starter, and that's a rare thing in the MLB nowadays. However, if things aren't going right in the rotation for him, transitioning to the bullpen shouldn't be hard and I think his electric stuff will do him well there. I could see him becoming the closer at some point.
  17. Schoop was an above average fielding 2B according to Fangraphs, so I have no idea what you mean by "he couldn't field". Maybe you were referring to Dozier, because that'd be more accurate. I don't really see the downside of this move. If the Twins stink in 2019, then they can trade Cruz for some prospects. If he just so happens to stink, well, move on because you don't owe him a cent in 2020. The Twins are adding a few pieces to compete now while also thinking about the future - I don't see what's wrong about that approach.
  18. A couple of notes from MLB Trade Rumors: It's good to see the Twins spending some of that cash on a very good bat, though I'm not sure about how Cron and Austin will fit. I'd rather have Austin be the primary 1B and Cruz the main DH... but it's a good problem to have.
  19. Boy, if Duran turns into something good in the majors, then the Escobar trade was 100% worth it, possibly 200%. Duran could make many look silly for saying it was a bad trade for the Twins, and I'm hoping to see him prove his worth in the majors someday.
  20. Locking in a rookie starter is not a good idea if Graterol pitches like typical Twins rookie started. It took Berrios, our best prospect in quite a while, a season of bad pitching to figure things out.
  21. I would DFA Duffey, he has zero value at this point. He's proven he can't be a starter or reliever in the big leagues. Mejia has been a fine back-end starter when healthy, so I'd rather just plop him in the rotation instead of trading him.
  22. All three of the Giants players were taken in the AAA rounds, meaning those players' talent is marginal and no 40 man spot is needed. It would be one thing if they lost 3 guys in the MLB Rule 5 draft, but the minors version? I'm not sure if that's even worth talking about.
  23. I see zero reason for a lack of excellence in what you've provided. Rule 5 AAA moves mean basically nothing in the grand scheme of things. And I agree with everyone else that the Twins need to find excellence first.
  24. My biggest offer to this guy would be about 6 years for $120M total. His 2018 season wasn't all that great, and I'd be concerned he'll have some troubles with strikeouts, plus I wouldn't want to pay this guy into his middle to late 30s like some offers have. I'm predicting he's going to go down as one of the biggest FA busts in MLB history, but I should wait to see the mega-deal he's going to sign.
  25. That doesn't justify overspending. Just because bargains didn't work last year doesn't mean they won't this year. Hopefully they will make a couple bigger signings alongside some cheaper moves. I do think they're going to get one higher-tier reliever like Familia.
