  1. We need more articles like this. Kimbrel vs Thanos... maybe Kimbrel could defeat him with a fastball, just gotta make sure he aims for the head.
  2. He’s already had tommy john surgery, so he’s got that put of the way!
  3. Buxton is not going to last if he keeps doing that every day. He's going to get CTE from hitting his head on the wall that many times. I would say something cheeky about the bullpen, but I think we have already done enough of that. The FO has reaped what was sown by adding just a single new arm to the 'pen.
  4. I have my concerns with this team and I think some of our pitchers are going to get exposed soon (I see Perez flopping big time in the rotation, the bullpen isn't ready for high leverage situations in back-to-back days, can we trust Mejia/Harper/Vasquez in tight situations?). But this lineup looked good on paper, and it's translating. Garver and Buxton are hitting better than I've expected, and it seems Castro is basically the backup catcher at this point, which is good, especially for depth. The next 7 games are against two pretty bad teams... I'd like to see them go 5-2 and start building a lead for the division. And I hope we can see some more development of our AA/AAA guys so we'll have some reinforcements later in the year. I'm not super encouraged by the progress of some of the prospects so far, and some need to get healthy. The good thing is that it's still early, and things can change pretty quick.
  5. Wow, what an insane game! It's not good that Romero gave up 4 of those runs, though. What a bloodbath of offense!
  6. Raley being on the 40 man next year will be fine, depending on the way he develops at AAA. He could be on the team in September. Smeltzer and the other guys who will need to be on the 40 man roster soon will hopefully be traded for some players to help the MLB squad around the trade deadline. It makes sense to me to use some of the ammo we got in last year's trades to help the team down the stretch in 2019.
  7. I totally forgot Smeltzer was part of the Dozier trade. I see Devin hasn't had a great minor league track record, but perhaps he'll start putting things together this year. And with Raley starting to build up momentum, getting this for 2 months of Dozier was quite the deal.
  8. Watching Jose Ramirez attempt to bunt and waste pitches made more of me die. Most of these guys can't bunt, and when they attempt to, they usually can't get him down the 3rd base line. Maybe if they could be bothered to learn how to bunt...
  9. Well, they also acquired Luis Rijo for Lynn, a 19 year old in rookie league who might eventually make his way up the prospect list. But really, for 2 expensive months of Lynn, that's hall he should be worth.
  10. It seems to me the point is to keep him in the organization, because it appears that the FO believes they'll lose him when they DFA him.
  11. I keep saying it, but Mejia is legit. He's going to provide a lot of value in the bullpen this year. I wouldn't be surprised if Gibson has a rough April but eventually picks things up come May/June.
  12. When did Castro become so bad? Yes, his 74 PAs in 2018 went very poorly, but his previous full season in 2017 (407 PAs) brought us .720 OPS and a .242/.333/.388 slash line that is solid for a catcher. That's not even to mention the catching defense. I don't know if we'll need to worry about a guy like Wilson playing ahead of Astudillo with Molitor gone, but Castro isn't close to that level yet. If anything, Garver might be in trouble, since he was rated by many defensive stats to be MLB's worst defensive catcher and has options (2 remaining).
  13. It looks like Gonsalves and Gordon are going to start the year on the IL. That’s 5 injured guys on our 40 man roster! I’m not sure what Jake Reed has left to prove at AAA. I guess the FO just doesn’t seem him as an MLB pitcher.
  14. I think it's a bit early to worry about any of the hitters after facing Kluber and Bauer. IMO Bauer is going to have a huge year. Also, methinks Mejia is going to do a good job in the bullpen. He's proven to be able to take MLB hitters down, and now with the problem of facing hitters for the 2nd or 3rd time in the rotation is gone, he's done to do well for himself in the pen.
  15. I had a feeling the Twins were going to fit Austin onto the roster somehow, but they're not going to go with a 5 man bench for very long, which might be bad news for Astudillo, who's got options. I'm not sure if they'll be able to go with Cron, Cruz, and Austin all on the team for very long. We could probably use some bullpen depth with 3 guys on the DL now... perhaps we'll see a waiver claim soon.
  16. Possibly, but probably not this early in the year. Perez is going to be the 5th starter when we need one.
  17. It's kinda insane what Tampa was able to do inside this division last year and I hope they can keep it up. They have a bullpen full of no-names that gets outs, they've gone with a bunch of young position players and DFA'd the bigger name players, and it somehow works. They trade their best guys away (Chris Archer) and they make things work somehow. I really want to see this team make an unlikely playoff run.
  18. I'm guess you meant WHIP instead of BABIP, but your point stands. Magill and Odorizzi have had awful spring trainings, but nobody bats an eye, they're on the team. Romero has a couple bad outings? Nope, time to ship him to AAA. Plus, Addison Reed, if healthy, would be in the bullpen no matter how poorly his spring went. The veteran will always get more rope in the Twins system, that's just how it goes.
  19. I'm not too concerned about his bat, but it does seem like he's going to be a poor 3B defensively. Let's see how Adrianza did in his 223 innings at 3B last year: (min 200 innings) UZR: 24th/56 DPR: 30th/56 Range: 15th/56 Looks like Adrianza is the better bet defensively at 3B.
  20. So... is the bullpen going to be May, Parker, Hildenberger, Rogers, Mejia, Magill, and Perez (for a week and half)? Yikes, that's not good. Oh, and let's not pretend Matt Magill has had a good Spring Training either, as he's posted a solid 9.53 ERA. I guess Harper and Morin will have shots at the 8th spot in the bullpen too, but that's not going to make a huge difference. I wonder if Harper might be the guy who gets the call up as he'll have 3 option years, while Morin would be yet another guy with no options. (Outside of Harper, only Hildenberger and Rogers have options.) I don't understand Falvey/Levine's plan of fixing the lineup with several good positional players, but then adding a single pitcher to a MLB deal. It seems like, once again, we're partially competing and partially trying not to win.
  21. I'll guess that May and Parker will get the first chances at closing, with Rogers being used as the "lethal weapon" or whatever we're calling the Josh Hader role. With the way Hildenberger pitched in 2018, I think he's a dangerous bet to be throwing out there in high leverage situations in the 9th (but it's clear that he will be throwing in those types of games, thanks to the roster construction). I'm also happy to be done with locking a reliever to the 9th inning. It bugged me how Molitor would always go to the same guy, even on short rest or after a really shaky outing (lookin' at you, Rodney!). But I don't like the bullpen options this year, and it won't take much for the pen to fall apart this year.
  22. I don't remember DFA talk about Pressly that much, and BTW I've been a big supporter of his. The big difference between the two is that Reed had a mysterious drop in velocity that coincided with his effective plummeting. I'm aware he's had a great career, but I don't believe he was averaging 89 MPH during it. On the other side of things, Pressly was touching 96-97 and was healthy. Ervin Santana has also had a great MLB career, but when his velocity dropped, he was a shell of himself...
  23. Reed can’t have much trade value owed $8M while averaging 89 mph and coming off a poor season. But I guess it’s a better idea to keep him in the Twins bullpen and wait until his ERA balloons to 7.00 or so and finally DL him.
  24. Nice article, Matt, I loved the personality you injected into this piece. I don't want to see retreads like A. Reed (unless his speed ticks back up), Duffey, or Magill in the bullpen... I would be fine cycling through some of the somewhat intriguing AAA depth (guys like Eades, Nicolino, J Reed) and see if anything sticks. I'd rather try out the guys with small chances to succeed rather than the guys we know that most likely won't succeed.
