  1. The strength of the minors the past couple years has come from the lower levels, and hopefully we'll see more talented kids get up to AA and AAA. I think we're seeing more of it with the hitters (Arraez and Gordon, Raley was on track before the surgery).
  2. I didn’t realize satire articles was exactly what Twins Daily needed, but I’m loving these articles. Good stuff!
  3. Nice, Kiriloff's back! Now if we could just get Graterol back from that shoulder injury...
  4. 6/18/19 - Red Sox at Twins - David Price vs Michael Pineda Box Score: Game Summary The Twins struck first in the second inning with Sano notching a one-out double, followed by a Jake Cave two run homer. It was a no-doubter, as I had a 6-12 roll, which meant that unless the pitcher is very good at preventing HRs, this one was gone. Price is good at preventing homers, but not great, so the Twins jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Sox chipped away at the lead as Betts hit a RBI single in the 3rd inning, but the bats exploded in the 4th inning. What followed was an error to get Martinez on 1st, a Devers double, Chavis double, Bradley Jr. single, Betts single, and a Benintendi single. The Red Sox took a strong 5-2 lead that they later strengthened to a 6th run. The Twins fired back in the bottom of the 5th, though, as Cave lead the inning off with a triple. Schoop singled him in, followed by Garver singling him to second. We then saw Rosario hit a double and Cron hit a single to make the game 6-5 by the end of the 5th. And then in the 6th, the Twins struck again! Cave hit a double (this dude is on a tear!), followed by a Schoop single that moved him to 3rd. David Price was pulled for Mike Shawaryn, who immediately gave up a game-tying single to Polanco. Garver then hit a double that scored Schoop, which gave the Twins a 7-6 lead. But then the bullpen struck - Littell gave up a single, and I pulled him and placed Morin in with one out already recorded. Then Michael Chavis, the young Boston 1st baseman, nailed a 2 run homer to give them a 8-7 lead. This one seems like a game of tug-of-rope.Trevor May then came out to pitch the 8th and gave up 3 singles and a 2 run homer to Mookie Betts, making it 10-7. This is getting real ugly! However, in the 9th, Cruz lead off with a single and Cron walked to get the tying run up to the plate. But Gonzalez and Sano both struck out and Brasier got the save. We are now 1-2 in Strat-O-Land. Another one went down the drain today... but at least this one didn't go 17 innings. I think my record for my longest Strat-O-Matic game went 13 innings. I'd like to see if I could ever break that number. Here's hoping we can win one next time out!
  5. This isn't happening. Cleveland is well within wild card contention and it would be foolish to give the Twins, a division rival, Hand with control from 2019-2021. I imagine Cleveland starts to think about trading him in 2020 if they're doing to rebuild or retool, but not now.
  6. I'm not sure if the Reds are going to be dealing Stephenson in the middle of his breakout year. I would, however, like to take a look at their other options. David Hernandez would be a great buy-low option (yes, he has a 4.80 ERA, but has a 2.48 FIP with a very good 12 K/9 without any major walking problems (3.0 BB/9)).
  7. I know this isn't related to 2019, but I have to post this tidbit from the 2017 Rankings: And yet Reed is still languishing at AAA!
  8. Holy cow, that's a microscopic BABIP! Colome would be a decent addition but I'd be aiming higher for a second reliever.
  9. LaVelle E Neal said on the radio yesterday that Krilioff should be back within the "next week or so". Apparently he just got a Cortisone shot in his wrist, and he's going to try to play very soon.
  10. Nice article, and I highly agree. We could move guys like Blakehorn, Jax, Colina, or even a big piece like Javier and I wouldn't hate it as the 40 man crunch is gonna be difficult to choose from. Add that in with the fact that prospects flame out all the time, and I absolutely approve of moving prospects. Try to not overspend on a trade, especially for a reliever - but with the way Falvine has held onto their prospects thus far, I don't think they're going to be reckless. I expect them to be calculated.
  11. Sign me up! Lugo in addition to guy like Greene or Smith would make for a good haul.
  12. I've been waiting for this guy to get a chance for over a year now. It doesn't seem like the FO considers him to be a prospect or even as an option with how many times he's been passed over by other players.
  13. Not good, but do remember that AAA is undergoing an unprecedented surge of offense. Here's his basic line: 5.47 ERA in 24.2 IP, 1.257 WHIP, 8.4 H/9, 2.2 HR/9, 2.9 BB/9, 9.5 K/9 The home runs were getting him in AAA, and he threw surprisingly few walks. It seems command wasn't as big of a problem for him down there than I thought it was. I'm not sure if putting him back in the rotation fixes him... it's hard to say. He wasn't getting strikeouts in the major or minor rotation last year.
  14. The only other optionable relievers were Harper (not happening) and Duffey (has earned a chance to stay). Eades probably wasn't available today so they sent him down, and they can get him back within 10 days or stash Parker or someone else on the IL and get him back. With the shape the pen is in, Eades will be back for better or for worse.
  15. Somebody on the game thread yesterday said something along the lines of "playoff teams don't lose a game like this". Well, I pose to you this... do non-playoff teams consistently have dominant victories after bad losses the night before? It almost seems like this team is immune to losing streaks. It is incredibly frustrating to see Romero struggling like he is. He needs his reset button hit and pretend like he's starting a new season over again. It seems to me like he's the latest Twins pitching prospect in to just fall apart like this.
  16. Wade looks like he's settled in his scouting report - great OBP hitter, but with little power and probably a corner OF. The low batting average has to be concerning with AAA becoming a land of rising batting averages. I would consider an Odorizzi extension, it just depends how much he wants after this career year. Gibson is a no for me, he doesn't seem like a lock to repeat his 2018 season and has disappointed me thus far. Also a no on Pineda. But yeah, the position players in the minors look exciting and even in the low minors, they have some talented guys. Now if we could just get some more [and healthy] pitching prospects going...
  17. I totally agree. Sano's numbers look great and he's mashing a lot of the time. But when a guy like Adams or a reliever with some strikeout ability gets up there, it seems like Sano has no chance. He struck out twice in that AB (I think he went with the check-swing on the wild pitch) and I wish he could shorten up his swing when he's down in the count 0-2 / 1-2.
  18. I'm not even sure what to think about AAA stats anymore. With the offensive spike, most hitters are crushing the ball and the average ERA is around 5.00, so it's harder to see how guys are going to transition to the majors. But you have to be pretty confident in your backups in case any position player gets hurt. You've got Arraez, Astudillo, Cave, and possibly even Gordon and Wiel in the wings - that's some solid depth!
  19. I'm intrigued in Smith, Watson, and Giles. I don't care as much about the extra years of control, as I'm thinking win-out, worry about 2020 and on later. I could see getting Giles in for a sizable haul of prospects and Watson for cheaper. What's trickier is the starter market... the options there aren't as clear-cut to me.
  20. I'd like to see if Cave could continue his hot hitting in the majors, but I suppose there isn't a ton of room for him. He could join the carousel of HR hitting. I'm intrigued by Littell's move to the bullpen. We really do need to try throwing bodies at the bullpen and see if anything sticks. Our two best relievers at the moment (Rogers & May) were starters before having trouble at AAA and converted to relievers.
  21. The word Tortuga is female - it doesn't matter what the gender of the person/animal is; in Spanish, words have genders. I never quite understood why, as I flunked out of Spanish class back in High School, but that's just how that language works.
  22. With the breakdown of how things will work in Strat-O-Land, let's simulate another game. This is based off Friday's bout with the Tigers. Box Score Summary The Twins first inning saw singles from Garver, Cruz, and Cron, followed by a bases-clearing double by Marwin Gonzalez. It appears this offense is as devastating in Strat-O-Land as in real life. Pineda started off great with 6 of his first 8 outs being strikeouts... but then he got crushed by Christin Stewart, who knocked in a 2 run HR in the 3rd inning against him. The 4th inning didn't go much better with a single, double, and walk that loaded the bases. Pineda was able to get 2 strikeouts and a flyout to escape that mess. Polanco, who was 0 for 8 in Strat-O-Land thus far, lead the 4th off with a home run. The offense quieted down until the 6th inning arrived. Buxton reached on an error and Polanco doubled, followed by a pitching change and a walk to Garver. This loaded the bases for Nelson Cruz, who grounded out to third, but he did drive in a run to make it 5-2. Pineda turned in a good 6 inning start, and Morin delivered a perfect 7th. Things got very hairy in the 8th inning when Harper gave up a double to Cabrera and then two singles. I pulled him for Duffey, who had a groundball hit to SS but Polanco errored on it, and then Lugo hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. Duffey then gave up a double to the 9th hitter, Jacoby Jones, and the Tigers tied it up. And if you thought that's where this ended... nope! Duffey gave up another double to Goodrum which gave the Tigers their first lead at 6-5, and then Stewart singled. I yanked Duffey for Parker who then gave up an RBI double to Nick Castellanos, which gave them a 8-5 lead. Wow... 6 runs, changing this from a Twins 3 run lead to a Tigers 3 run lead. Brutal! Garver hit a double in the 9th, but Greene shut the rest of the crew down, sealing a 8-5 win for the Tigers. Well that was disappointing! Darn, I felt like we had that one. I guess the game knows the Twins' bullpen is a weak spot in real life! We'll head into our next matchup 1-1 and hope for some better pitching.
  23. Remember when Gibson was supposed to be the #2 to Berrios and it would have been a mistake to trade him away when we had control over his 2019 season? So far he's been erratic and somewhat ineffective. I expect far more from him against the worst lineup in baseball. Suddenly with Perez falling apart, Gibson being mediocre, and Pineda being the definition of a #5 starter, I'm getting concerned for our rotation. The recent failure to pitch more innings is forcing the bullpen to cover more, and our pen isn't good in the first place. Eades looks intriguing so far. I hope they have the patience to ride out some early struggles, but 2 scoreless innings is great to see from the rookie. Magill doesn't have the ability to get anybody out right now - time for a really long IL stint or hand him his DFA papers. As much as we need another high leverage reliever, we could also use a couple more guys who can fill the not-as-important innings and not be horrendous like we've seen from Magill, De Jong, Adams, and so forth.
  24. I gotta wonder how many people my age have even played Strat-O-Matic Baseball (I'm in my 20s). From what I can tell its popularity was back in the 80s, maybe even before then?
