    I would guess the thought process is that they don't want him throwing innings than he absolutely needs to. The less wear and tear on his arm before the postseason, the better. It also gave the Twins another look at Poppen... and now we know he needs to be shipped to AAA. I would have liked to seen him throwing a full game shutout too, but I understand it if Baldelli's doing this to keep Berrios maintained for October.

    On MLBTradeRumors, the Twins are listed second on the Deadline Headlines: American League article... as in, compared to the rest of the AL, only the Astros made more impactful trades in their opinion. IMO that doesn't justify the lack of more moves, but it puts it in some context. Also, check out how the New York media is handling things....

    You're not wrong... I hear NFL fans saying "oh no, the CBA's up in a year or so, there's gonna be a lockout!" But really, the MLB is in far more trouble in my humble opinion. There's just something inherently wrong with teams owning players' rights for 6-7 years and then the player finally gets to hit free agency... from ages 29 to 32 sometimes.

    The MLB has gotten weird lately, free agency is now a dead period where teams refuse to sign veteran players, August trades are banned and the trade deadline suddenly becomes constipated, young players are signing deals to prolong team control (in some situations, giving up tons of future $$$ for less amounts now), and bad teams like the Mets and Reds are coming away with two of the deadline's best three starters. Seems like teams are holding on to their money and prospects more tightly than in past years. But in my book, it seems Falvine doesn't like taking risks, and that's pretty disappointing.

    I think we're a year early for Duran in the majors, and it depends how Graterol's shoulder recovery goes. They need to be extra careful with him. The Mets aren't making any sense, I guess they're going for a 2019 playoff run? Good luck!

    Falvey and Levine come from backgrounds that had several major trade additions at/before the deadline; this history you speak of is from Terry Ryan and Bill Smith, and I think it's crazy to suggest they're cut from the same cloth. They might be sticklers to their prospects, but I expect at least one move tomorrow if not multiple (and there is also likely to be a flurry of moves tomorrow, though the trade deadline has been bizarre this year). BTW they still have 3 open 40 man roster spots, and I doubt they DFA'd all these relievers just to decide to do nothing at the trade deadline.

    Do note that we currently have 3 spots open on the 40 man. There’s plenty of room for more additions.

    Just a thought, what team’s fanbase is happy with this trade deadline? Is anyone satisfied with the mediocre pitchers that have been traded in the last week? I don’t think this is just a Twins thing. The Yanks haven’t been in the rumors lately for starting pitchers, is it time to panic? The Red Sox only have acquired Andrew Cashner, you think that’s gonna move the needle? The As and Rays fans are probably disappointed, and the Astros also have yet to do anything. And that’s just the AL.

    Yes, very good, getting Graterol back is fantastic. I was starting to get very worried about that shoulder problem. Here's hoping for no more setbacks!

    As a general principle, prospects usually have a rough time transitioning from A+ to AA as the competition is a bit of a difficulty curve. Just from my general perception, hyped up prospects usually start kicking butt in A- and A+, but then reach AA (or sometimes AAA) and then cool off a little bit.

    Kiriloff as a headliner in a package for Syndergaard? Sure, I'd be up for it. Lewis and Syndergaard plus more? Heck no!

    Minor is less inspiring? The guy’s having an all-star year and I could trust him to be our #2 starter in the playoffs. Leake would be a major disappointment.

    I’m also looking for an explanation for why no other competing MLB team didn’t top this offer. Is Stroman generally overrated? Does Toronto love those pitching prospects for some reason?

    Yay, now that Duran has escaped Fort Myers, he can finally get some Wins under his belt!

    Totally agreed. Cron is on pace to be a 2.0 WAR 1B, which is a heck of a bargain for a guy we got on waivers and we only have to pay $4.8M. Plus he's very good defensively. I highly doubt a .810 OPS is replacement level, even at 1B.

    It's nice to see Jax and Ober doing well. Teng is a name I'll be adding to the memory banks.

    If the Twins consider themselves a team that can improve pitchers upon acquiring them, then I think this move can work out. What do I mean? Well, check out what the Rays did with Romo in 2017 after they got him in a trade after the Dodgers DFA'd him: We were all mad when the Twins signed Anibal Sanchez, but then he went on to have a very good season elsewhere. I think our pitching staff could make Romo better than what he was in Miami. Oh, and losing Lewin Diaz doesn't mean much, he was going to need a 40 man spot and the Twins likely weren't going to give him one. Also:

    I highly doubt it; he's been mediocre as a starter, and I think he could use a long stretch of time pitching as a reliever in the minors before dipping his toes in the big leagues.

    Finally, they used Alcala as a reliever! Now just have him keep doing that, and we could see him in the majors by 2020!

    I have been a big supporter of Jake Reed, but his numbers have been flat-out bad at AAA this year. He needs a chance in a different organization, methinks.

    I would be fine with acquiring Hudson, I can't imagine he'd be too expensive as a rental. But who are my favorites, you ask? Hmmm... Will Smith would probably be #1, but it seems the Giants aren't going to sell now. I'd love Ken Giles and I like Marcus Stroman... I also like Kirby Yates and Shane Greene a decent amount. I think Ian Kennedy would be a great add, his numbers have been fantastic. Mike Minor would be a great starting option to go after too.

    Sounds like the Giants are in on a playoff run, so it seems Will Smith isn't going anywhere. Seth Lugo would be a great get, though.

    Not sure Blankenhorn is a 'doubtful add', I think we'd lose him in the rule 5 draft. The rest of the list looks about right (on my list, I also have Rijo and Hackimer as doubtful adds). I would maybe throw Jaylin Davis on that list, but he should be added by the end of this season.

    Great article, Jeremy. This gives a nice breakdown to those who may not have been paying close attention to the minor league system this year. Absolutely, we need to move some of them. I'm going to be disappointed if we don't move any of them by the deadline, because we're going to lose several in the rule 5 draft if they aren't careful.

    I really want to see what Davis can do in the majors, but we don't have anybody to send down outside of Cave. Perhaps he'll got a shot in September, if we have enough room on the 40 man roster at that point.
