  1. I have two thoughts: if Tom Pohlad is making the decision to buy or sell I think we are screwed. Second, the idea that we are “still in it” implies that all the other teams that have scuffled unexpectedly will continue to struggle and allow the Twins a fighting chance. Gleeman pointed out that in the last 20 years a team with a losing record made the playoffs one time. In other words, several of the teams who have struggled will likely take off and leave the Twins behind. This is where the FO needs to have the courage to finish the rebuild and give us a brand new window of several years to win.
  2. In my world a DH isn’t even eligible for this award. Lots of season left to shake things out.
  3. This is where your evaluators are critical. If the guy is getting batted ball luck by a lack of homers maybe you sell and get what you can. If evaluators can confirm his success is due to actual changes in his pitching profile then you hang onto to him. If you are serious about building a pen you have to start somewhere.
  4. Correct. For me, headlines like this discredit the article. It gives the impression of cheap click bait stuff when there actually was a topic there, albeit somewhat inside baseball.
  5. This pitch is fueling his success? He has a 5.24 era and a 1.35 whip. I like the kid a bunch but he has been barely passable and is closer to St Paul than “success”.
  6. Hat tip to Larnach. I’ve never been a big fan but he has improved on both sides of the ball. I would still trade him for any reasonable return but I think he deserves credit for getting better at the middle / later part of his career.
  7. Clemens is contributing nicely. From a defensive perspective he is clearly the best defender at first and second. Likely the best defender at RF and LF. If they played him at third I bet it wouldn’t be long before he was as good as Lee and Lewis. While I would trade him if someone offered up a good deal, I would have no problem bringing him back. He certainly would solve a roster problem next year.
  8. Yea it’s been rough. In some cases he is striking out without the pitcher throwing a strike. This story is going to be interesting for the rest of the year.

  10. He reminds me of Varland when he first came up. The fastball is there but the secondary pitches are lacking. Louis dialed in the knuckle curve and took off. Hopefully Morris can find at least one other pitch to complement the good fastball.
  11. You are correct sir! Johnny what do we have as a prize for Mr Ashbury?
  12. I’m not sure I understand your point. Are you comparing Keaschalls situation with Killebrew and Rose?
  13. The decision to deal Jeffers is not difficult- they have to deal him. He is not going to sign an extension this close to free agency. Trade him and if you want to throw a bunch of money at him you will have that opportunity during free agency.
  14. Certainly but I’m not sure that is an apt comparison. Pitching in a defined set of mechanics allows improvement in replicating the same delivery over and over and allows for muscle strengthening to support those mechanics. Almost none of it applies to position players, especially infielders who must throw from a variety of positions. I just can’t recall a position player who had a weak arm transform it to an average arm. Maybe it has been done I just don’t recall it. I suppose it’s possible he is still building strength from his injuries but it’s been almost a year for the broken arm and it’s going on two from the TJ? Seems like the recovery would be complete.
  15. I turned the sound off last night in the 6th. Couldn’t take the silly banter.
  16. One big concern I have is the arm strength. There are plenty of examples of guys getting better in the field through hard work and repetition. I don’t think there is much to be done about his arm. I’m not aware of any players that came into the league with a problem arm and fixed it through practice. Seems like one of those you either or don’t have it situations.
  17. The problem with clickbait headlines to articles is it derails the meat of the discussion. “The best decision in Twins history” is impossible to declare. How do you compare? Across eras? I believe the point of the article is that we are damned lucky to have signed Buck to that contract. I hope he finishes high enough in MVP voting to get paid a little more.
  18. Zebby got a little lucky the first couple of innings. He threw a bunch of center cut pitches that didn’t get punished. Then he settled down and started locating better and looked good. Glad to see Royce get the single to knock in a couple. His first couple at bats were brutal as he struck out and the pitcher never threw him a strike. Lots of good hitting all the way around.
  19. This. If you need to wait until the answer is plainly obvious to everyone then you don’t have the ability to be an effective FO. Falveys inability to be decisive in personnel decisions got us to where we are.
  20. I keep thinking Keaschall will get better in the field as he is athletic but it hasn’t happened. His arm is a real problem - it’s pretty weak and he has a slow release. I don’t believe he should be anywhere near CF but maybe he could be acceptable in LF. Don’t know if you can have him and Martin as outfielders on the same roster though. Here’s the real elephant in the room: he has to hit better in order to play anywhere. His current level of offensive production doesn’t earn him a starting spot and he definitely doesn’t have the ability to be a utility guy.
  21. Since there isn’t a recap from last nights game I just want to give a hit tip to Paredes. He’s done a fine job for an unheralded prospect that I’m sure the Twins had no big league plans at the beginning of the year. Where it goes from here, who knows but he doesn’t seem afraid like a couple other relievers we have. He takes his limited stuff and goes right after them. I wish him well.
  22. As soon as I saw Bowden I dismissed the whole premise. However I will trade them any of Gabby Gonzalez, Larnach, Wallner or Martin for a good reliever.
  23. It’s too damn bad they didn’t figure out the plica problem earlier. I’m sure limping around on a bum knee caused other issues. Since the surgery he’s been as available as most big leaguers and we are seeing the results. I give zero credit to Falvey on the extension. Buck left money on the table to get the deal done. I want him to stay as well because he is a great role model for what hopefully will be a bunch of younger players. Plus, he’s a bit of a unicorn in that he is maintaining elite speed into his 30s. I mean with his natural speed and power he could play well beyond his current contract.
  24. Correct. If we were looking at this with the keen eye of Las Vegas it would be something like this. Odds are between Culpepper and Houston one will make it , one will not. Between Lee, Keaschall and Lewis odds are one makes as a plus regular, one ends up a bench player and one ends up AAAA. If either scenario turns out better it will be a massive win for the Twins.
