There are still some quality FA's out there who would vastly improve our roster. The TV deal is getting done. Plus, the Marlins are still looking for SS and C help. We need another stud SP. Better to do it now than at the trade deadline so we have the benefit of that player(s) throughout the season. Git"R Done!

Twins Daily 2024 Top Prospects: #4 Marco Raya, RHP
SteveLV replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Skenes has a vastly different physical stature than Raya. He is a beast. He also was throwing 9 inning complete games in college, so is stretched out. I have no problem with bringing young pitchers along slowly, ramping them up as they go. I assume this is also on the recommendation of the medical experts, too. -
Assuming he will not justify a QO next off-season (and I would guestimate he has about a 25% chance of having a season so strong he would get a QO), the only logical moves for the Twins are to either trade him or extend him. To allow him to play out his current deal and let him walk after the season with no compensation would be foolish. However, they can always wait until the Trade Deadline.

My first thought is that this is a nice depth signing for the Bullpen. No problem with this move. I assume at a modest price. Second, my suspicion is that more trade(s) are coming. Might be a small move like Gordon for a lotto pick. Might be a bigger move for a package of players, hopefully a good SP. Twins need 2 spots on the 40 man at this point, and no obvious release options. Finally, if Alcala and Balazovich (sp wrong I am sure) can get their acts in gear the Bullpen could be formidable.

Went to see Walker Jenkins last spring. 9 scouts and about a dozen video cameras going. Insane. -
Twins Daily 2024 Top Prospects: #8 Charlee Soto, RHP
SteveLV replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I mentioned this in a thread a few weeks ago. I was watching video of Soto and something struck me. I went back and watched videos of Dwight Gooden pitching, and then back to Soto. Very similar deliveries and stature. Hope Soto turns out like Gooden did! -
Well, I am sure most have played team sports in our lives. There are good teammates, ok teammates, and lousy ones. My point is that it is a FACTOR in making a signing or trade decision. It is not the end-all be-all, but it certainly is a factor. No one wants to play with Bauer, apparently. Objectively, the guy can pitch. But no one has signed him the last 2 seasons. There is a reason for that, including PR.

So every player that has won a World Series in a team sport is a great teammate? I am just suggesting that Lopez would have the skinny on him and doubtless would at least be contacted by the FO before doing a deal. Just like Lopez is reported to be close to his former teammate and fellow Venezuelan Luzardo.

The Jorge Polanco Trade Fails the Simplest of Tests
SteveLV replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I know Dr. Gast loves Vasquez and hates Jeffers, but I wonder if Vasquez plus Lee and another deep lotto, or perhaps our competitive balance pick, yield Luzardo from the Marlins. Fits their professed needs at SS and C, and seems to be pretty fair value. Use the money saved on Vasquez's contract to sign a RH bat and suddenly the Twins are looking dangerous. -
Assessing the Twins' Trade of Jorge Polanco
SteveLV replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Doctor Wu, Polanco actually has 2 years on his deal, with another option coming for 2025 season, too. At a very good price.- 99 replies

Like last season, I think in fairness we need to wait until all the dust settles before we judge the off-season. Objectively this makes the team weaker for 2024, but if Lee comes up and performs, unclogs the infield. It nets the Twins about $5M in cap relief, and it does bolster the bullpen. First, I hope there is some type of injury protection for one or both of the pitchers coming over. At least a PTBNL Second, I believe the Twins are not done with trades. Still hope they move assets to the Marlins for solid SP help. My dream is both a controllable SP and Alcantara, sending some salary (Farmer? Kepler?) along with prospects to Miami, the salary to offset Alcantara's contract while he rehabs in 2024. I hope and surmise the Twins are not done wheeling and dealing at this point.

I am curious how much additional cash beyond $6M that the Mariners got from the Giants is heading to the Twins. Hope it is significant if that allows additional moves to bolster the 2024 roster.

I encourage interested parties to review the Marlins post on MLB Trade Rumors, and also the comments section which contains a long Blog post on a Marlins source (journalistic). Essentially, they need MLB-ready help at SS and C, and their new GM is willing to move some of their shorter controlled SP. The new GM has recognized there is little to no help at those positions available in FA. We have Vasquez, Farmer and Lee, assuming the Marlins consider Lee to be near MLB ready, that fit those needs. So, we can provide players they should want. The problem is salaries. Vasquez and Farmer are not expensive, but not cheap either. Luzardo is obvious target, but I wonder about Alcantara for the long run as well to give them cap relief and balance the salaries changing hands? Would this Twins FO take the gamble on Alcantara? They have done that previously with rehabbing pitchers, but this is on a different scale of risk. Thoughts? Does sound like they want some players from the Padres and have been talking to them already.

That Marlins trade is too rich for my blood, but anything could happen at this point.

Assuming Gilbert and Lewis are both studs. I don't do that deal. I don't believe in trading an everyday great player for a great SP who only plays once every 5 days at best. Add in the greater risk of injury to pitchers in general (setting aside Lewis' specific injury history) just makes this a poor idea. If Lewis goes forward to hit .290 with over 850 OPS for the next 5 years you look like a fool for trading him.

2024 Prospect Previews: Charlee Soto
SteveLV replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I was comparing him to Gooden in terms of stature and his throwing motion. Obviously having pitched zero innings professionally and just turning 18, any performance-based comparison is impossible. -
2024 Prospect Previews: Charlee Soto
SteveLV replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I get a bit of a Dwight Gooden vibe watching his pitching motion. More of a pronounced left lower leg kick, and FB seems to sink more than ride like Gooden's. Similar size, Soto perhaps a bit thicker build. Hope he has similar success! Such an exciting prospect to follow. -

The Table Setter, Jan. 15, 2024: Marlins May do What?
SteveLV replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the Marlins are looking to shed salary, do the Twins make the long move and try to get Alcantara? Will not play until 2025, and coming off TJS, but a STUD prior to injury. If we send Polanco, does that get it done? They get offense and salary relief in 2024 and we get pitching down the line on a reasonable contract. Or part of a larger trade involving other players?- 23 replies

When We Could See Top Twins Prospects Debut in 2024
SteveLV replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It seems to me that 99% of this analysis will turn upon injuries, or lack thereof. If Correa (God forbid) were hurt, Lee likely to be promoted. If AK goes down, Severino. If Buxton goes down, or can't play CF, Martin. Etc. For the pitchers, spring training performance will also come into play for guys like Canterino and Festa.- 118 replies

Cody Bellinger semi-maybe plausible scenario
SteveLV replied to weneedneshek's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
No chance. It would be waiving the white flag forever on Buxton, Bellinger is WAY out of the Twins' budget. He is a somewhat risky signing based on past performance. Big market teams do this. The Twins will and do not. (Now watch the Twins announce a singing in 15 minutes and shock the heck out of all of us!) -
Just a thought: Could Keller be moved to the bullpen? Many guys see a velo spike when called on to pitch relief instead of starting.

The Twins Have Been Great at Replacing Stars They Trade
SteveLV replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With Kepler, in my mind at least, they really have two sensible options: Either trade him or extend him. It would be foolish to just let him play out the season and lose him for nothing next year, unless he plays so well you will extend a QO he would decline. And in that case, you should have extended him now. His trade value is higher now that at the trade deadline. I would try and extend him if I ran the FO. If his contract demands were unreasonable, shop him. He is a darn good player and should be a valuable trade asset.- 67 replies
