  1. I view Lee as a potential SS backup if Correa is out and Farmer is traded.
  2. I don't understand these "Table Setter" daily updates. Seems like a constant reminder that the Twins role at the table is leftovers only, and not until everyone else has signed and/or traded for the players they want.
  3. Dodgers are creating a juggernaut. Sign Yamamato and re-sign Kershaw and away they go.
  4. $22M for a player recovering from TJ with an additional $5M in incentives? Pitching is ridiculously expensive this year.
  5. Riverbrian, the financial calculations reflect the depreciating value of the contract dollars of the years of the contract, then calculate a total value as of the date of contract signing, then divide the present value amount over the years of the actual contract. So the "$700M" contract has actual present value of $440ishM at signing, divided by 10 years, yields AAV of $44.5M that is used for determining luxury tax implications. Does that help at all?
  6. QB is the most difficult position--and most valuable position---in all of pro sports. It is hardly surprising good ones would be highly compensated. Not a good analogy, IMO. There is NOT a perception in the NFL that teams in NY or LA have a competitive advantage over teams in KC or Pittsburgh. And the entire economic framework is set up to maintain that parity and perception of fairness. MLB cannot "fix" that perception because it is an accurate assessment of the inequalities prevalent in the current MLB system. The perception is accurate. The way to fix it is to dramatically overhaul the system. If the owners can put together a proposal that puts equal or even slightly more money in the players' pockets, I bet a deal could get hammered out. Fat chance, but it could be done.
  7. T&R, are you content with the current system, then? I think you are in a vast minority, but so be it. I have repeatedly stated that: A) Ohtani is a wonderful player; B) Happy he gets whatever he can get; C) Hold no grudge vs. the Dodgers for doing what they do. My beef is that MLB leadership, both owner and players/agents, have skewed the game towards massive compensation for the elite, relatively modest compensation (relative to revenues) for the average MLBer, and downright criminal compensation for younger, emerging players and those toiling in the minors. Furthermore, the growing perception by fans is that the deck is getting more and more stacked in favor of the large market teams.
  8. What do people think are the chances Kepler justifies a QO after the 2024 season? I put it at about 20%. That, of course, would generate a comp pick like the Twins will receive for Gray's signing. If he hits like he did that back end of 2023, he certainly will justify the QO. I don't see anyone to easily replace him on the current roster. I agree with comments above that we have more infield depth than OF depth, and that Polanco (with an extra year of team control, too), would appear to be the more logical trade assett.
  9. Sure, the small and mid-market teams have a shot--just not an EQUAL shot at being competitive. Good sports leagues (like the NFL) give the fans in every city the hope and expectation that their home team has a fair shot at winning every year. Baseball is destroying that expectation of fairness and equality. I would like to hear the reasons why anyone on this Board would not want to waive a magic wand and create a player compensation system parallel to the NFL where there are hard floors and hard caps, strictly enforced, to create that level playing field. It will probably never happen, but doesn't everyone here at least want that????
  10. If we trade Polanco, I want the Twins to get pitching. I don't care if they are MLB players or prospects, get arms, please. The Twins should be OK in CF between Buxton, Castro and Martin. Gordon, too, if he is on the Twins roster by then.
  11. Players and Agents are not stupid. Deferred money has less value. They are not going to take net less money to "help out" a mid--market team. The reason THIS deal works is that Ohtani makes more than $50M from endorsements, so the present $2M is just window dressing. He gets $68M per year after he retires when, presumably, his endorsement revenue will decline. My question is who guarantees those future monies? Do the Dodgers have to buy an Annuity to guarantee those payments? Does the LA Dodger Baseball Club guarantee, regardless of potential future ownership change? Does the owner personally guarantee? Does MLB guarantee? Interesting situation.
  12. Nothing needs to be done now.
  13. 10 years, $700M Ohtani to the Dodgers. $70M per year for a single player, who is coming off TJ surgery. Amazingly wonderful player, but this is insanity. Not that he earns this money--good for him!--but that MLB's system is so inequitable that one team can pay one player more than another couple team's entire payroll for 26 players. They might as well form two levels; Rich MLB and the Rest. For the A's, Pirates, etc., to compete vs. the Dodgers and Yankees of the world is not even the same level of competition. (And I know the Yankees stumbled last year.) MLB needs to get a hard cap or they are going to alienate all their fans in small markets---forever.
  14. Don't get me wrong-I like Glasnow as a pitcher, who wouldn't? But the Twins are trying to cut payroll. Why would they pay Glasnow $25M for 1 year when they could have had Gray back for that price, Cy Young runner up? I know more years, but he is a known commodity. Or Maeda for 2 years at that price. I think Glasnow is a long shot based on the money. Happy to be wrong! :)
  15. Glasnow seems like a lousy, lousy fit. He is only 1 year, expensive at $25M, has an injury history, and is not a FA so will require substantial trade capital. Bad, bad and more bad for the Twins.
  16. Baseball was THE major league sport through the mid-60's. SInce then, the NFL has surpassed MLB big time. For some segments of the US population, the NBA is also more important.
  17. Title says it all. All kinds of news including trades and multiple signings, nothing involving our squad. Color me disappointed. It would be nice to be aggressive rather than passive once in a while. It sorta worked (after a long and winding road) with Correa last year, but we are looking at leftovers once again Twins fans. I hope this post ages poorly and something still happens, but I doubt it. By the way, Fedde receives 2/$15M????? He was nontendered by the Nat's 2 years ago, career ERA north of 5, and one year in Korea and he gets that deal. Seems nonsensical....
  18. That interview suggests the Twins are not making another CF acquisition a priority this off season. Could be smoke, but that is how it sounded....
  19. IMO, massive overpay for Williams--and I like him, alot. I am not sure I would trade ERod straight up for him. Same thing for Festa, possibly. Polanco plus Gordan plus a lower prospect should be fair value for Williams, but I don't think Milwaukee is going to trade him at all.
  20. Seems like the Twins are one of the last franchises that will be taking a salary dump. They are trying to do the same thing! Seattle is clearing room for Snell and/or one of the Asian free agents.
  21. Anyone know what the Twins receive from MLB for the out-of-market streaming rights on MLB network?
  22. NFL streaming on YouTube was about $350 for, arguably, 17 games. (I am sure many folks watch more than their home team, e.g., gamblers and fantasy football folks). I would gladly pay $250 for 162 regular season games and a handful of ST games. That is $1.50 a game. Heck, a large Coke at McDonald's is way more than that nowadays. If 250,000 fans pay that is $62.5M gross revenue, and they could pay production costs and on-air talent and be close to the Bally contract, and that would be ad-free! If they sell advertisement, they could sell it for something like $99, and then there would be no excuse not to purchase it for 90% of fans. That is less than the cost of attending one game in person, a total bargain. Conceptually, I see no reason why they can't profit and flourish with a streaming model. Am I missing anything?
  23. The relief pitcher seems like a possibility, especially since the Twins already drafted him once. It is curious that he dropped 14 rounds in the subsequent draft, and that the Twins did not re-draft him. Jumping up that many levels would be a literal and figurative leap of faith. Why not take a flyer for $50K? If he can't get guys out in Spring Training, send him back.
  24. I think Miranda's performance in 2024 is one of the biggest unknowns on this roster. Was his dismal 2023 due to injury, now resolved? Or was his excellent 2022 a classic SSS that will never to be seen again? That question impacts any acquisition of Hoskins, as they are both RH power hitters who are essentially at 1B/DH. On Farmer, I am reluctant to trade him given Correa's PF condition and the high mileage on his body. I think the Twins should plan to let Correa take more days off and/or use him at DH to help him stay healthier. I know he is a total gamer, but this might make some sense, and Farmer is the only other strong SS on the current roster. Unless Lee forces himself onto the MLB roster in Spring Training, he is likely to start his year in AAA. Certainly the likely first call up if there is an injury, unless it is 1B in which case we might see Severino.
