  1. That absolutely isn't the only argument, the other is to have an eye on this year (Trade for a relief pitcher and maybe a hitter) and the future. Letting him and Maeda go for a pick that is probably 4 or more years away doesn't nothing for the 24 rotation. Next year it would be Lopez, Ryan, Ober and Paddock coming back from injury and who? So they have to go out and trade for another starter (probably at a higher cost than the pick they get from Gray) or they have to go out and spend more money, or go back to going into another season with questions marks at 2 starting pitchers and maybe another Ober injury. Next year SWR will be 23, Festa 24, Varland 26, can you continue to have these type of players on the 40 man without figuring out what they have?
  2. Seems a bit extreme doesn't it, without him no shot? They are still running out Lopez, Ryan, Ober and Maeda for 4 games, or maybe with Ryan gone Paddock comes back good or Varland or even Festa comes on strong. I am not trading him for trash but if they can get a couple highly rated prospects that are young and don't required a 40 man I am doing it, or maybe something similar to the Cruz trade where you are taking others tough 40 man decisions and they see something like they did with Ryan. There is no chance if I am part of the FO that I am paying Gray 3/60, that pretty much goes against why they were hired in the first place. At the end of the day I am actively looking to trade Ryan or Maeda, can't let both walk for nothing, that isn't a good plan for a mid market team.
  3. For 24, The Twins have Lopez, Ryan, Ober, Paddock, and the pipeline (SWR, Varland, Festa, Raya etc..) there is no reason to continue to pump money into the starting staff I thought this FO was supposed to produce a pipleline. IMO Gray is vastly overrated he has a ERA of 4.14 since Mid May, which is pretty good but not great, it would be better if he was averaging 6+ innings per start but he isn't. They can/should trade Gray or Maeda to get prospects back but that doesn't mean they also shouldn't try to improve the team in other areas. “let’s see what we have for the future” , they do have to figure out what they have (with certain guys) this year or they go into next year with a bunch of unknown older prospects, you know like they did this year.
  4. IMO, they should trade Gray or Maeda, the one that brings the most back in terms of minor league players. That is what a team in the Twins situation has to do to have continued success, roll over the roster. I believe they can afford to trade one of them with Festa, Varland, SWR available and to be honest they need at some point to figure out what they have with them. Also IMO I don't think they should sign Gray, I think adding another huge salary isn't in the cards for the Twins.
  5. This is satire correct? How do you write this with a straight face? "Throwing fewer innings doesn't make what Gray is doing any less remarkable, and it is safe to assume that if the Twins forced Gray to throw seven to eight innings every start, his numbers would not be nearly as impressive" So pitching less innings doesn't it make it less remarkable, but if asked to pitch more his remarkable numbers would go done? Brilliant! "Gray and Viola limit home runs, generate a significant amount of quality starts, and efficiently get through innings while limiting walks and producing respectable strikeout numbers" FYI - Gray has 7 QS in 18 starts. Ober has 9 in 14. Gray doesn't efficiently get though innings he runs up his pitch count and it results in "shorter" starts, and somehow that makes it impressive. I like Gray, he is good, but if you need advanced stats to explain a guy who averages 5 1/2 innings a start is somehow comparable to the Twins all time greats advanced stats are worthless.
  6. So Miranda got hurt over the all star break? Only the Twins can get injured when all of baseball (except the best of the best) are on a break.
  7. Kind of a sad list as of today, because at this point Jenkins and Soto are completely unknown. Lee has been very good but not so great he is forcing the hand of the FO to move him up. ERod (who I had/have high hopes for is hitting .206 in A+, Raya also in high A, but only 33 innings so far (so if he is to be a starter he is probably a couple of years away, only turns 21 next month), Prielipp 22 and has pitched 6 innings this year and 34 in the last 3 years, so he is years away from a major league starting pitcher, years. Wallner what hasn't been said about him already, Festa 23 in AA with a 5.21 ERA, Rosario 20 in high A, like his numbers there. Severino is almost 24 and stuck in AA. (27 year old Bechtold is the 3B in St. Paul, why again?) I would disagree with Bleacher saying it is top-heavy and lacking depth, I would say the exact opposite it seems like there are a bunch of guys that will be major league players, but outside a a couple none that looks like franchise top players/pitchers. Outside of Lee (and that maybe stretching it a bit)I don't see a top of the rotation type pitcher or a future all star type player. (Leaving out the two high school guys) Before people jump on me I would love all the Twins prospects to be solid major league players if they are 27 in AA or 17 in rookie ball.
  8. You should put a sarcasm mark on this, because it was clever and funny.
  9. I don't believe either are long term solutions, and I don't believe the Twins do either, I think they thought Larnach would/could be but between injuries and generally not being good that may have passed, Not sure what their thinking is with Wallner, maybe he has the same skill set as Gallo but Gallo costs 11 million.
  10. One from each group should go Wallner/Larnach and Gallo/Kepler. I am going to go out on a limb and say there is little to no chance Gallo and Kepler go unless another outfielder comes back in a trade. Imagine the Twins cutting those two and Larnach and Wallner come up and do the same or worse than Gallo/Kepler or one gets hurt and they are back bring up Contreras/LaMaree/Stevenson. Nope no FO is going to do that.
  11. Not really understanding what you are trying to say. There have been plenty of #1 overall picks with less game experience than Royce when they started playing the majors. For example Spencer Torkelson played less college and minor league games than Lewis. When you add in that he is 24 that just makes it look worse on him, he has been in professional baseball for 7 years.
  12. 7 years of this FO and it screams overhaul the roster? If that is true (not disagreeing with you), ownership should tell the FO you can mess around the margins but nothing drastic no big prospect trades and if you can turn this around, you can continue to be employed if not it is time to go separate ways. 7 years and the highest payroll's ever and 21, 22 and 23 season happened, that should be unacceptable.
  13. All that is true, doesn't answer the question do you want this FO here moving forward after what they have shown the last 3 years, and my answer is a hard NO, and they aren't going to trade away players for the future if they aren't part of the future is my point.
  14. Lets be honest, BA is not a relatively meaningless stat, all the best players in the league can put the bat on the ball and have a decent to good batting average, yes there are a few players that hit below .260 and are still considered the top players. BA can be over come with a high OBP or even a high SLG but at the end of the day you can basically use BA to decide how good a player is.
  15. So are you OK with the FO office continuing to be employed going forward? IMO there is no way they are only selling if they haven't been told their jobs are safe.
  16. For those of you that don't think the age of a prospect doesn't matter. The top 30 BA average in the majors belong to the following groups of players and when the debuted. Age 20 - 4 players Age 21 - 10 players Age 22 - 3 players Age 23 - 4 players Age 24 - 3 players Age 25 - 3 players (1 cuban, 1 catcher and Donovan) Age 27 - Whit Merrifield Age 29 - Japan player Age 30 - Cuban player
  17. I agree with you, that is what I would do sitting at my computer, I was just saying if I was in their actual position.
  18. I am not talking about the adding part, I am talking about the wasting of money part. Gallo is a sunk cost, unless they can get somebody else to pick up part or all of the that or even get something in return. if you have to cut somebody, why not cut the cheapest guy? That is Castro and less than a million left. How many months ago did this FO go to ownership and request they pay Gallo 11 million dollars, and now just barely half way though we are excepting them to go back to ownership, explain they were mistaken and want to now cut a guy and pay him 5 million dollars to likely play for somebody else.
  19. Player - millions - OPS+ Gallo - 11 - 108 Farmer - 5.85 - 78 Taylor - 4.5 - 82 Solano - 2 - 121 Castro - 1.8 - 90 And they are going to flat out cut the player they signed to 11 million with a 108 OPS+ (basically having his career average year) half way though the season? and you think this ownership is going to be OK, with them pissing that money down the drain? No way! (example 272 of what is wrong with this FO) They need somebody to save their butt and take Gallo or Kepler in a trade.
  20. Again I agree, but if you are this FO are you really cutting Gallo (OPS+ - 108) with the money you spent (5 million or so left) for an unproven player? I am not, I wouldn't have signed him but that is a different story. Or are you going cut Kepler (4 million or so left)? So if the answer is no, you have to demote one of the following Castro, Miranda or Julien or a pitcher. I would probably cut Kepler and then I have Wallner and Larnach in case one is bad, if both are, well another really tough choice has to be made. And because of that I assume the Twins have been calling everybody then can looking to trade them instead of cutting them or demoting someone. At the deadline even tougher decision are going to be needed. Can they really afford not to trade Solano, Taylor or Gordon? The more you dig into this roster the worse it gets.
  21. Oh, 100% agree with you, was trying to figure out if that is what you meant. Thank You
  22. I am all for just about anybody. unless I am missing something somebody needs to be cut to add another player to the 40 man, do you think that this FO is going to cut Gallo and Kepler for a completely unknown quantity? So that likely means Sands or Winder correct? Even to get Wallner up, somebody has to go down, would that be Miranda?
  23. They have Celestino, Gordon, Larnach, Wallner, or are you saying for sure starters?
  24. I haven't poo pooed calling anybody up, have I said Larnach isn't young? yes, have I said I would be done with him? also yes. (and was up and wasn't good) Wallner (who I don't consider young but he is less experienced for sure) I have said should be up already. I agreed with Severino (and I added other AA players) But when people throw out young guys (or less experienced) it sounds like they believe there are others guys on 40 or others guys in the minors, and if they call up some of players on the older side (Prato (25), Camargo (24), Williams(26 4 months until he is 27)for example) if they aren't good what is the option? cutting them or somebody? it isn't like they have a ton of room on the 40 with Celestino, Wallner, Larnach and a bunch of Mid 20's plus pitchers in the minors. This roster is so messed up they basically have to cut Kepler or Gallo just to get Wallner or Larnach up, then when Lewis and/or Polanco come back one or two more have to go down or be cut (Miranda and Julien look like the obvious choice of going down) and then the roster doesn't look like it has room for anybody else. (not even mentioning if Gordon comes back) No matter what happens it seems like they are going to have to figure how to move on from these mid 20's plus guys to free up 40 man. You can't go into next year with Miranda, Larnach, Wallner, Celestiono Julien on the 40 man and in the minors. with the half dozen or more pitchers that are older and they don't seem to trust.
