Week in Review: Searching for Answers
TwinsDr2021 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well CES has a slash of 185/190/321 so he would fit nicely with the rest of the guys that are playing and Steer has dropped almost or more than 100 points in everything the last 9 games. But yes he would be much better than everybody on the team as of now (I believe Julien at the end of the year will have just as good of numbers as him) Can't really argue the rest of your comment.- 35 replies

That is pie in the sky optimism that starters would even occasionally get though 6 or 7 with 75 pitches or less, let alone Consistently, pitches can't do that now with a higher upper limit on pitches. Ryan - 5.1 (93), 6 (96), 6 (90), 5.1 (81) - So probably two starts are 5 innings and 2 less Lopez - 6 (87), 4 (98), 5.2 (95), 7 (84). SO 1 5 inning start, 1 between 5 - 6) two less than 4, Ober - 6 (82), 6(84), 5 (68), looks like Ober would have 3 5 innings starts. IMO the Twins are basically doing this, but upped the pitch count a bit from 75 and are using 5 starters. Do you honestly believe starting pitchers are going to be able to start 40 games and pitch the same or more innings with less rest? Paddack has thrown 89, 86, and 82, and only once completed 5 innings, SWR pitched one of the more efficient starts that we have seen (6 innings, 2 hits, 1 BBm 5 K's) and threw 80 pitches, He would have been pulled after 5 in this scenario, Won't even mention Varland. If you are going to cap pitch count and hope for the most innings as possible, you need 5 starter types at least, because the way I see it no pitching staff could with stand that pressure and lack of rest for pitchers. If you cap it at 3 or 4 innings depending on who that pitcher is, it seems reasonable you could go with 4 starter types. And that gets back to would any starter pitcher want to be on a team that it was impossible for them to get a win? How would fans like it, if they go to a game and Lopez is 0 -13 with no matter his ERA?
-
@Mike Sixel Honest question what part don't you like? The fans not liking it? Reducing Pablo's (and your best pitchers) innings from 180 to 200 down at least to 160? Paying really good pitchers to pitch less? Thinking prospects and their agents will go for it? Or coming up with ideas that will at minimum reduce the pitching side of the payroll. or the sarcasm?

Orioles 4, Twins 2: Sweeping Away the Misery
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My point was this, you basically said come to the games and the Twins will build a watchable and hopefully good team, instead of building a watchable style of baseball so fans will want to come. That doesn't even take into consideration how many people can't watch the games on TV and learn about the players and build a liking of players or basically being told you are living in the past and probably aren't smart to understand the Twins strategy.- 54 replies

Who is keeping Camargo out of the lineup?
TwinsDr2021 replied to Riverbrian's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
That almost sounds like they are afraid he might do good and then they would have to sit their 10 million dollar catcher? I mean with the way Jeffers is hitting he can't be out of the lineup.- 51 replies

Orioles 4, Twins 2: Sweeping Away the Misery
TwinsDr2021 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a sarcasm or a joke correct? Did we forgot what happened in 21, 22 and the beginning of 23 when they played unwatchable baseball (finished 23 pretty darn good) and started this season exactly like 21, 22, and the beginning of 23 playing unwatchable baseball? I will add how 19 and 20 ended? There is a famous line in a baseball movie, build it and they will come, and what the Twins want to say is come and we will build it. On a different note, Just realized Pablo is only making 8 million this year and next year makes 21, looks likes another super fun off season for the fans.- 54 replies

Former Twins, Where are they now? 2024 edition
TwinsDr2021 replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
not to nit pick but it wouldn't be Polanco replacing Julien, it would be Polanco replacing Santana and/or Farmer. and for bad as Polanco has been it would be huge upgrade (maybe not in wins, but not having Santana on the team would be good for fan moral.e) -
This team is fun, right?!?!?!?!
TwinsDr2021 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
That is the silver lining right? I mean for as bad as they have played they are only 6 - 11. which isn't great but not the end of the world They better do something in these next 13 games (White Sox - 7, LAA - 3 and Det - 3) because after that Boston, Seattle, Toronto, NYY, Cleveland, Nats, Texas. KC, Houston and NYY again. When I seen this schedule I was thinking start 11- 6 be around .500 after that section of then make hay on the teams after that. -
If the goal is drive more fans away from the game, this would be a wonderful idea. If you have guys that are good enough to pitch 6 to 7 innings fairly consistently and you intentionally cap them at 4 innings a time, doesn't seem like a great idea IMO. Imagine paying a Lopez 21 million next year to start 40 games go 160 innings and be like 0 - 13. Can't imagine he would be happy and I can't imagine and decent minor league pitching prospect would be too thrilled to be in that type of organization. But hey ideas like this that reduces player salaries might get you a job for the Twins.

on the Baltimore broadcast they interviewed Mullins and ask him how he explains how well they do with two strikes. His answer was try not to do much, put in a good swing and keep the train moving. Is that the same answer the Twins give?- 203 replies

Here is an idea, in a sport that should be trying to attract fans let make it more unwatchable and harder to follow. Lets throw out actual performance stats and go with projected or expected stats and tell the fan that just watched somebody go 0 - 4 in a loss that he actually didn't have a bad game. Lets tell the fans that Wallner who to an casual fan struck out 17 out of 25 at bats isn't really bad because is wOBA last year was top shelf, or that it really isn't 17 for 25 it is 17 for 33 pate appearances. Pitching wins matter, the best pitchers regardless of era win games, because they are good, have the ability to pitch deep into games, giving them more of a chance for a win. and generally stay healthy over time. Yes there are years pitchers get lucky and win more games then they probably deserve (Strider last year for example) and the other way but it generally evens out. All this seems to go back to the year The King won the CY Young with 13 wins and was horribly unlucky that year with wins, but it also seems people forgot he had 30 quality starts out of 34 starts. Pitched 249 innings with a 2.27 ERA and 232 K's. (his WAR 7.2) Lets compare those numbers to the guy that took second in the CY Young last year. 17 QS of 32 games, 184 innings, 2.79 ERA and 183 K's, 9 wins. (WAR 5.4) I don't want to ever take away was the past pitchers accomplished to make the current generation feel better about what the state of starting pitching/baseball as become. Barely go half of the game (5 innings) or 2/3 (6 innings) consistently and tell people how amazing they are.

Resolving the Apparent Infield Logjam
TwinsDr2021 replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Are you suggesting a guy that had a 4.51 ERA last year is a finished product, which was almost a full run higher than the prior year? I loved the trade, it was a great to amazing trade, but the guy pitched 1 minor league game and then was called up and pitched 5 games with a 4.05 ERA and 30 K's in 26 innings. I will gladly give them credit for his 22 season, but than to be fair have to give them credit for his results in 23, no?- 133 replies

Resolving the Apparent Infield Logjam
TwinsDr2021 replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I am not, and I am not caught up on Origin, I truly believe in trading pieces for prospects and the vice versa, what I am asking is who you believe they developed? There have been a couple of picks (which I mentioned) and ton that can't stay healthy. They traded for Maeda, Gray, Odo, Paddack, Ryan and Lopez, and for the most part no I don't believe trading for these pitches (except may Odo for a minute) do they get to take credit for developing, a little? yes for sure. As for the bullpen they should get partial credit for Alcala and Duran if they stay healthy and continue to pitch well, and a some for Stewart (who also can't stay healthy). As for the pen, I don't think taking starters and turning them into relief pitchers is all that uncommon, I mean isn't that exactly what the last FO did, Eddie, Perkins, Pressly, Rogers, May, Duffey, Fien, Duensing, Boyer, Guerrier, Swarzak, Burton, bullpen from the last FO was really the least of the worries. Have they or did they develop Kepler, Polanco, Sano, Buxton and others into better players? I'm am not saying this FO needs to be fired or is terrible, but I am also not going to give them extra credit when they have been allowed spend double what was previously allowed from the Owners and I am also not saying the past FO deserved to be employed even as long as they did.- 133 replies

Resolving the Apparent Infield Logjam
TwinsDr2021 replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
So what you are saying is this Front Office got together and said lets pick up Polanco's 10.5 million dollar option so we can buy a good prospect, and minor league player, a relief pitcher and a iffy type starter and tell the fans we have to cut payroll? I don't believe that for one second, I think they thought they could pick up Polanco's contract (Which is pretty reasonable) and swap him and maybe a prospect or two for a good pitcher, and when that turned out to be not true, they did what they did.- 133 replies

Is this sarcasm? Beside Ober what starting pitching has been developed? Yes they have done good on relief pitching (well kind of since they have had some pretty bad years) on the Offense who has developed? Jeffers, yes, Julien looks like it, and Lewis the number one pick in the draft. Oh wait, it must be all the guys in the minors ready to step up, oh maybe not? Catcher - FA (10 million), Jeffers 1B - FA (5.25), AK (drafted prior) 2B - Julien - Looking real good SS - Correa (FA - 230 million) 3B - Lewis - Looks great when not hurt Utility - Miranda (drafted prior), Farmer traded for and resigned, Castro (FA) LF - Wallner - jury still out CF - Buston - drafted prior RF - Kepler - drafted prior Martin - traded for (Berrrios), Margot (FA) And this is a record that bears out pitching (or really any) development? (I have praised them for trades, generally they have done pretty well for the most part)- 133 replies

But Vazquez hit the ball hard, so doesn't count as being bad. /s But to be fair only Jeffers and Mirnada seemed competent on the whole team (young and old) I think a few of the Twins hitters might want to take a peak in the other dugout to watch professional hitters that don't sell out every pitch and at bat for the long ball. Watching Westburg and Rutschman last night was a absolute joy on how hitting is supposed to be done. I will also give Jeffers credit the last few games looks like he really has cut down on the over the top swing for the fence mentality and Miranda's single on the change up he was kind of fooled by was one heck of an at bat.

The piling on Varland is kind of weird IMO. he pitched 94 pitches which is generally more than all the other pitchers go (besides Lopez) and that should be in the pen? Edit : I was totally wrong the first time , he gave up 4 earned runs and 11 base runners. He gave up two earned runs in 5 innings and only 6 base runners. Yes even after the error in the first he could have gotten out of the inning with no runs, but hits do happen (I mean for other team not the Twins /s) IMO this game should help him stay in the rotation not hurt him Remember the Twins pitchers don't get to face the Twins hitters but when they did today they dominated (Hays and Holliday. I have always cheered for Wallner and hoped like heck he was going to turn out (and maybe he can) but he is so lost right now it seems like the only way he isn't going to strikeout is if the pitcher hits him with a pitch. He needs to go down and regroup or come up with an injury where he can rehab in Florida and get this straighten out. I felt bad for him coming to the plate against Kimbrel knowing he probably wouldn't even be able to foul a ball off.

I was watching the Baltimore broadcast, and their announcers said the Twins have now pinched hit for their lead off hitter and their cleanup hitter you don't see that very often and the other guy said, not sure I have every seen that without an injury. Some people just don't understand the brilliance of the Twins.
