  1. Technically it would be obstruction but either way there is no rule that requires contact. Umpire discretion rules on these calls. Many youth sanctioning bodies will require an attempt to avoid contact for the kids safety but there is nothing in any rule book that requires contact to get a call.
  2. It’s a data point I can work into by combining multiple lines on the splits page. That’s not a measured stat.
  3. Their opinions have merit but they may adjust approach when presented with the success percentage of a run scoring play over the course of a full season. What’s the WPA of improving the success rate in that situation by say, 20%?
  4. For all the sabermetrical stats we have I just can’t believe we aren’t measuring that situation. Pass/fail, it doesn’t matter how you chose to approach it but did you score the run.
  5. Having him read the NFL intro ad was a little suspect. But he’s giving good player based insight which is what I would want from him. Delivery is expected to be rough. He’s got a future in broadcasting if he wants it. AJ used to suck.
  6. Agreed, I also am liking Waino though. He’s raw but he’s giving the expert, unpolished real stuff. Good info. You realize what that means right?
  7. Agreed on the interviews but I would watch a full feed of umpire camera on a second screen. It doesn’t work for a live broadcast though, replays only.
  8. You’ve described a winning formula. I like it.
  9. Lopez and Ryan announced as well. First 3 are set.
  10. This was decided a week or more ago. With the benefit of hindsight it makes perfect sense and Ober has been working on the Astros game plan for a week. Depth makes plans like this possible.
  11. I think the knowing something was that this was the plan all along. Ober knew this when he started the last regular season game and when he was left off the roster. Ober has been working his Astros game plan for a week.
  12. Having another 1/1 shortstop type who struggled with injuries early but has mostly figured out how to stay on the field can’t hurt. Maybe that’s for that other thread though.
  13. My man, if you think they’ve been stubborn on Buxton you ain’t seen nothin yet.
  14. The proper metric for any management team is incremental sustained improvements. Peruse this thread from the way back machine for reminders of progress.
  15. Easy on the hyperbole please. There are lots of players who could have, and have made those plays, in big situations as well. I love Carlos, but he’s not the only baseball player in the world. Let’s be realistic. That said, what makes him special is that he made all of them, at all the right times and can reasonably be expected to make them the next time. Clutch is hard to measure but easy to see.
  16. Managing the postseason is different than the regular season. I thought the pinch hitting was very well done these two games. Most of my issues with the pinch hitting all year were when he did it in non-leverage situations like leading off an inning. I agree wholeheartedly with the moves in the 4th with a chance to break the game open. I also liked leaving Julien in to face Kikucki with the bases empty in the 5th. What we saw the last two days was the perfect deployment of the purposefully constructed deep position player roster. I was very curious what they would have done had they used Kikucki in the 2nd. No real issues with the bullpen but it was interesting that it was Varland and Theilbar two days in a row. Not sure that Varland has earned that much faith in high leverage spots just yet. You can’t see all 33m on the field, never could.
  17. I’ll take my 0.0001 WAR and put it on my mantle. Glad I could contribute. Seriously, both games the place was electric. I would expect true standing room sellouts next week for Houston, they will need it. Speaking of, the AL goes through Houston on way or another, might as well go now,
  18. I'm normally anti replay but the stadium experience for that play was awesome. It wasn't until the 3rd or 4th angle that showed the obvious out and the crowd swell and mocking vladdy was tremendous fun.
  19. Trying to will the crowd into a chant. Heeeey we want Kikuchi! Iykyk That is all.
