  1. I feel like we've got a problem here with the definition of "core-4" I think Cody meant it in the sense of "the four best players who are locked down for a few years" and a lot of commenters here are taking it to mean "the only four good players on the team."
  2. Anecdotally, I know people from Canada who follow the Blue Jays closely but live nearer to Montreal than Toronto, I think it's very possible that the success and popularity of the Jays has increased support for another Canadian team (from what I've read, part of the problem with the Expos was that they were... not good?).
  3. I'm reasonably happy with a series split at Yankee Stadium. Let's bury the Yankees when they come to Target Field though, please.
  4. Sorry to triple-post here, but from everything I've heard, I suspect Vasquez deserves some credit. From what I've heard, he's really good at working with the pitchers, saw a story somewhere saying that he helped get Ryan back on track after that grand slam.
  5. I like position players pitching, I realize it's not a competitive choice in the moment, and what you're seeing in position-player-pitching innings is not really relevant to the game, but it offers fans an interesting new narrative to follow in the final innings of a blowout when the question of who's going to win has already been settled. It's like, yes, we've already lost the game of baseball, but for those of you who want to stick around, how about a nice game of what-the-hell-is-going-to-happen-with-the-position-player-pitching?
  6. Pinstripes are ours now. That's our thing. Yankees are no longer the pinstripe team.
  7. The pageantry around Duran's entrance is really fun, but I need to know, are they still trying to get people to call him Durantula?
  8. Sounds like a watchable game

  10. Obviously too different, but for the sake of making up a variant game, I'd say this actually actually tacks on a lot of inaction by increasing the frequency of inning changes and batter walk-ups. I say nine innings, nine outs per inning, and if the next batter isn't already in the box by the time the pitcher has the ball back in his hand, the pitcher is free to throw a strike over the plate without him. Tack on more innings if it's still too short.
  11. I want Kenta to be OK, but it sure does feel good to have Ober as the first line of depth.
  12. I think the main reason fans don't like analytics as a tool for building rosters is that they're generally used for bargain hunting and fans don't like bargain hunting. You don't need analytics to tell you that Aaron Judge is great, and fans would much rather see their team just be the highest bidder for Aaron Judge than get a bargain on a Joey Gallo bounceback that someone's computer said might happen.
  13. I think I disagree? My main reason is that the postseason is the most likely time that a casual, non-fan is going to catch a game, and so assuming a snappier pace of play makes the game more palatable to casual viewers, the playoffs are the most important time to have a pitch clock. Second, I think the pitch clock is probably going to benefit offense since pitchers will not be able to rest up as much between pitches, and I think tilting things a little bit in favor of offense contributes more to the drama of a playoff game than it removes in tension between the batter and pitcher. I also just feel like it devalues regular season games a little bit. If we remove the pitch clock to soak in the drama of the postseason, I feel like we're basically declaring regular-season games dramatically void.
  14. I'm not taking off work early, but will try and swing by right after work at 5 and catch the end of the game. The pitch clock can't shorten it THAT much, right? Also if anyone shows up and doesn't know what to order, that rye lager is the best thing they've got.
  15. Oh wow, I watch Twins games at Forgotten Star all the time because I don't have cable and it's the nearest bar to me that reliably shows the games and doesn't mind me hanging around for three hours. Strongly considering taking off work early.
  16. Seems like this model is pretty high on our fielding. I won't be complaining at all if we get this kind of performance.
  17. I'm just really happy that there are NO pitchers in the opening-day rotation who I'm going to be disappointed to see. Like if I decide to go to a game on any given Thursday night, there's currently no chance that I'm going to look up the lineup for the game and get bummed out that I'm in for a night of Archer or Bundy or Chi Chi Gonzalez. All five of the projected starting rotation are guys I'm excited to watch, and so are probably the first five depth options (though for some I'm more excited about prospect intrigue than impressive performance). We actually have a level of depth where, until injuries kick in, I'm not even likely to see a truly boring filler guy starting at the SAINTS. Is this more competitive than Cleveland having multiple actual aces? Probably not, but it's really nice to be a be able to expect to see a fun pitching performance at any given game. Just imagine! An entire year of not reading a recap and seeing the starting pitcher described as a "desiccated husk!"
  18. I think it's a long-term business move and not a short-term competitive move, Maeda's contract incentivizes him to start. If they don't give him a chance to do it, it's going to be harder to get anyone to sign a similar incentive-laden contract in the future.
  19. The FO has famously been getting overpays this offseason, I feel like at this particular moment in time I'm happy to trust the process.
  20. It seems like the trade deadline is a better time to find takers for a glove-first outfielder anyway.
  21. I think the no-injury scenario isn't even seriously worth planning for. A six-man rotation is always going to be a temporary luxury.
  22. Considering how much the Twins have had to dip into depth starters, and how injury prone the opening-day rotation is, I don't think relegating Ober to depth is that big of a snub. It's pretty clear that the rotation moves have been more about stockpiling than upgrading. I'll bet Ober pitches more major-league innings than at least two opening-day starters.
