  1. No. Berrios should be up now and helping the Twins, not traded. Trade the mediocre starters.
  2. Personally, I think settling for an average shortstop with a weak arm, limited range, and average speed is a horrible plan, regardless of who is catching. But then, I have never been one to just accept mediocrity as a ceiling. I certainly am happy for the team that he is hitting recently. A .250 hitter will have streaks of both kinds, hot and cold. The rest of the year counts. When a person comes to the plate, it is the same experience, regardless of where they play in a couple of minutes in the field on defense.
  3. Great article! Get him up before September 1. Time to get on with it. Santana is not eligible for the playoffs. Berrios has to be.
  4. What now? Get Berrios up immediately and make sure he can be available if the Twins do make the post season...... if nothing else, but out of the bullpen. Santana is not looking like he can help this team get into the playoffs, and he is ineligible for the post season, anyway.
  5. When Nolasco is written about, "quality peripherals" invariably are mentioned. Fact is, Nolasco is not a "useful starter". He never seems to get the results the peripherals suggest he is capable of, and it was a bad signing, unless you are conditioned to accept that a win one lose one pitcher with a 4-5 ERA is useful. Santana, Nolasco, Pelfrey, and even the Hughes extension (when he had 2 years left on his contract) was misguided, in my opinion, at the time and now. I am so tired of mediocre free agents being signed.
  6. My biggest nightmare would be Terry Ryan not replaced as GM. I guess you would call that a recurring nightmare........ At least my recurring nightmare of Gardenhire/Anderson ended this year!
  7. It is beginning to look like two - or at least one - barely deserving teams may be playing in the wild card play in game. It may as well be our Twins! I found it interesting that Perkins declared that in his warm ups for the all star game he first started feeling his problem. It is when I had suspected. He was getting shelled in the all star game. It was quite a contrast between Perkins and Chapman.
  8. The Triple Crown stats and Wins-Losses and ERA are and will always be part of baseball. The record stats. I love the advanced metrics (self titled a little arrogantly, evolved might be a better word than advanced, especially since many advanced stats advocates think many advanced stats are worthless and unrepresentative and a stretch, too) but the record stats should and will outlive the current batch of advanced metrics, as they are sure to change and evolve. I mean...... we still use umpires to call balls and strikes! A lot of advanced metric guys still like that..... I mean...... If the strike zone was called the same and truly accurately, how could they argue about pitch framing any more?
  9. That would be a sure way to bring the ratings down! The market would be reduced to such a small sample. It is nice for people to enjoy baseball without all the dribble behind the scenes. Many people enjoy baseball just fine without arguing about everything. I like to visit both, and don't want them the same.
  10. Too young and his arm can't do the innings, eh? Amazing that he also pitched throughout the off season, if not just for workouts. Amazing that guys used to start every 4 days and pitch complete games and shutouts, and throw well over 200 innings. People aren't that different from 30 years ago. This philosophy of saving years is futile. Good thing they saved Meyer last year. Wouldn't want to get a guy to help the team just because he is young. If you are worried about innings, just put him in the pen. It still needs lots of help.
  11. I don't think this splash even has a ripple. Well, maybe a couple rings. We will see. I love 35 year old pitchers. It makes me feel like the rebuild is finished. At least he looks like he is in shape - eh, Perkins?
  12. I thought someone was channeling Terry Ryan when I read this. I thinks this very internal dialogue is why he does nothing and signs mediocre pitchers and free agents. His fear of failing is stronger than his preceived reward to succeed by having the confidence in his choice and making the right decision. No decision instead of making the decision and trading the redundancy will they still have value. You could also pick the right prospect, make the decision while the other prospect that is traded still has value, and get a comparable prospect back for the prospect you traded. Doing nothing or settling for replacement level is the worst, for me.
  13. I do I do............. absolutely. Right now, for instance, Tulo would be at short and Kazmir and Liriano would be in the rotation, and the bullpen would look more like Kansas City's because I would have actually done something about it last off season..... Hughes wouldn't have been extended yet if at all, or Suzuki; Pelfrey and Nolasco and Santana never would have been signed........ I never would have left money the owner said I could spend on the table year after year........Gardenhire and Anderson would have been gone after 2012 for sure, maybe 2011..... Berrios would have started last Friday......yes...... I will take the job. Can I have it?
  14. "The Manager, Paul Molitor, kept giving up outs by sending base stealers. They were successful just once in four attempts on the night." Actually, 2 for 5, but whose counting............
  15. As long as it is Terry Ryan making the trades, nothing is going to change about the quality he settles for. Maybe next year we finally get a new GM to do the trading.
  16. This team is not ready for the playoffs, even if they do make it and get lucky and win the one game wild card game. No quality starters, bullpen, and closer with dead arm. Hunter is baked and ready for retirement........ Dozier is streaky and inconsistent, as well as Plouffe, and Suzuki is melting, Mauer is a shell of what he once was, and the bench is weak. The time is passed for the fix. The difference between 1.5 games out of the playoffs and 2.5 games out is pretty insignificant, still. A couple of days ago, they were also 2.5 games out of the central cellar. Time to bring up the youth and look forward to next year.
  17. Tulo should be the shortstop. No one in the stable or on the team can play the most important position in the infield. Opportunity was in hand and lost. Greatness was right there to be had. Instead, fans and apologists are trained to be satisfied with..... Escobar, I guess. Perkins lost this game more than Nunez. (plus, after the bobble, the game was over, and it saved an error, and got Perkins one out. That is quick and clever thinking and generous to a teammate!) It was up to Perkins, and they once more gave the ball to him. He was lucky it wasn't a 2 run walk-off homer after the no movement pitch he threw to the rookie on his first pitch in the game. Perkins is cooked for the season. Time for the 60 day DL. He just doesn't keep himself in shape enough to last a whole season. He has been serving batting practice in and since the All-star game, and we are fortunate that it hasn't been even worse, if that can be imagined. Both this year and last, Perkins just doesn't have the conditioning to do what he wants to now, and follow through and get movement on his pitches as the season matures. How about that job by Casey Fien tonight? You have to be happy about that.
  18. A short stint in Rochester, to me, does not mean that Buxton is a Red Wing with obligations. I like getting him up to qualify for the post season if it still looks like it has a possibility of happening. I mean, if minor league playoffs was the priority, then why not send him to Chattanooga? He was there longer. Doesn't he owe them more? See....... the only thing that really matters is the MLB team. Rochester has Arcia and Vargas and Santana. That ought to be enough. In regard to who plays centerfield - if Buxton is the best of two exceptional choices defensively, then what does it matter if Hicks is in right? Hicks knows what the future is looking like, and best to get on with it sooner than later. When is comes to sample size - might as well take the small samples of hotness and use them instead of waiting the the fall. That great small sample could be generated in the show instead of AAA.
  19. It always amazes me when folks want a young player, and player you cultured in the system, to do good just so you can trade him for a different prospect to basically start over and hope that prospect can become what your new MLB player finally has. I am no fan of Terry Ryan making the trades, but I am sure glad that someone with the former philosophy is making the trades.
  20. All Tonkin needs to do is perform, and not give up all the runs he does when he gets the opportunity. It is on him. He has had so many chances and can't seem to duplicate his success in AAA ball. Any jitters should be over.
  21. I guess going 4/5 with a homer from the left side off right handed pitching the other day doesn't count? Glad I wasn't wrong about Hicks, and it was sure tiring to listen to/read all the endless disparaging of him. Hicks will have slumps, and will make some mistakes in the field, but he is still young and improving. Pelfrey....... he is still a worse than mediocre pitcher that is capable of some good games. I still predict that his ERA will approach 5 by the end of the year, if not be over 5. Don't be fooled. He is still Pelfrey and not "young".
  22. High School pitchers take waaaaayyyyyy too much time. The 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 year plan to the bigs, especially if Twins' scouts pick them. I am over it. I say hype and trade to get a real major league ball player.... like Tulo.
  23. Like Tonkin, Duffey seems to lack "the right stuff", blinded by the bright lights. Let's see if Berrios can take the spotlight run with it, instead of look like a deer in the headlights. Duffey had his chance to debut, the only chance he can have to debut. The people in charge said he was the most ready. If that is the case, the Twins are really in trouble. Let's see if Berrios can show them they were wrong.
  24. Are you channeling the thought process of Terry Ryan now? Fear of trading the wrong redundancy paralyzes one from taking any action? I thought this year, the second of the 4 year contract, was supposed to be the "comeback season" for Nolasco.
