  1. More than anything, this season screamed "out of shape" to me. These guys ran out of gas, collectively and individually. Even those that look to be in shape (Mauer and Dozier and Plouffe, for example) should take their career more seriously and put in the work that lets them last a whole season, instead of half a season - right Perk? With age, it means even more work and diverse workouts during the off season. Cardio, flexibility and strength. They should all hang with Berrios. He seems to get it, and at such a young age. As one ages, it is even more important. Right Perk?
  2. Except, Boston seems to like bad contracts, and keeps making new ones that they don't even have to trade for! They also know how to trade them away when they want to. Thanks for the summary of contracts. Miggy's may end up being the worst.
  3. To waive or to wave, that is the question. I see Mauer waving goodbye to his no trade clause and waiving it entirely before his career is over, and by choice. (I have no idea what wiaive is .) Looking at his spray chart from this year even, he would have some pretty good numbers if he was bouncing doubles off the green monster instead of flying out into the outfield shift. The longer he continues to be a mediocre average hitter (and below average for his position) and not be able to adjust that "perfect swing" that is making more and more outs, the more attractive finishing his career in Boston might become. The time for Morneau to be on the Twins has sadly passed. It is hard to let go sometimes. Mauer is a conundrum. Hunter took his best years elsewhere, only to come back in the final fade, and will only block the future now. Kinda sad. These were/are players that were Twins to me, and not rentals and visitors that I can never think of as Twins, like Pelfrey, Nolasco, Pavano and the like.
  4. I agree that Gibson was the best starter over the course of the year. That said, it is not a good reflection on the quality of the Twins' pitchers, and there is trouble ahead if this type of performance wins you the best pitcher award for your team in the coming years.
  5. I always find it peculiar that a "no trade" clause is brought up with such stern and somewhat condescending tone, with the seeming assumption that someone was ignorant of its existence because they suggested a scenario that involves him as part of a trade. Does anyone that is an obsessive Twins' fan and/or a fan that frequents this site and comments not know that Mauer has a no trade clause? I haven't met any, if there are. Plenty of people with no trade clauses have been traded, and Mauer could chose to waive his, as many others have, anytime he choses to. A team can work out a trade, and present it to Mauer when it is something to consider. Discussion of trading Mauer certainly is fair game, and the no trade clause doesn't mean it slams the door shut on the fantasies.
  6. I would love to see Ramos playing some outfield!
  7. Hunter should start in center! Wasn't there a bit of a contest to guess when (if he did) he would get a start in center here on TD at the beginning of the year? My guess was for the first inning in the home opener. I think it would be cool from him to get the start and leadoff...... and then get taken out of the game to a standing ovation either on the bases after he gets on....... or from the outfield during the first batter of the top of the second.
  8. Act right? DON"T DO THAT? But sliding into someone at second with the intention to take him out and possibly hurt them ("but I wouldn't be meaning to....") when you are not even close to the base is OK? Throwing at someone is OK? No intent or malicious motive to hurt anyone there, eh? Bench clearing and fake fighting is OK? That is professional? Because it is clear that in baseball..... they DO DO THAT, and many fans here are wanting it to happen, expecting it to happen, or are OK with it happening. So many things are not done with the spirit of the game and rules in mind. I guess there are still many around that will support this continuing. Act right? The "consequences" don't seem like "acting right" to me. The Bully in the school yard never did like the quick witted comeback or the taunt, and always liked to hurt the guy that because he couldn't think of a more clever way to retort. To me, that is what throwing at someone that had nothing to do with the event is tantamount to.
  9. I don't think I will ever think of Pelfrey and a Twin. Just a visitor here that stayed 2 years past his welcome, for me. I won't miss him, and will be glad to seem him pitching batting practice on a visiting team when he comes to Target.
  10. He showed them up? Personally, I can't read minds. I can't assume intention, especially in a celebration. Pitchers do it all the time. The fist pump coming off the mound, after a key strikeout........ and that is OK too. Nobody seems to get bent out of shape about that. But a batter gets all happy and it is showing someone up? And the fake fighting and benches clearing that happens? Always funny, and really immature. Flipping bats, fist pumping....... good for the boys to have some fun. It is the most cowardly thing in baseball to throw at a batter intentionally. Having your teammate's back? Hit a home run, get any hit, strike the guy out the next 10 times. Macho macho men. Grow up. Play ball. Celebrate when you want. It is a game, after all. Show some joy. The game is never too big for to let emotion like that get into it. It only makes the game more of a game and more fun to watch.
  11. Pressure is a factor for everyone. That was an easy question. No studies needed. Pressure is a factor.
  12. My opinions......... It is cowardly to try to hit a batter with a pitch. period. ever. bad tradition. cowardly tradition. It is lazy to not run out a pop up, grounder, or a dropped third strike. ever. always. Reading this thread, it feels like I walked in on my daughter watching "The View". So many opinions are expressed without really knowing the players and reasons and what it is all really about, and my bet is that it is something other than what happened. It is not just about the event, but something else that was being suppressed. And then......... I don't really care about this non event. Some people just don't like each other, and even they don't really know why.
  13. I never trust anyone with a neck beard. It seems to look even worse and makes him even more untrustworthy when he is not pitching well.
  14. Duffey has been wonderful. There would have been nothing wrong with both of them, Duffey and Berrios, both looking great.
  15. I look at Alex Meyer last year.... and the times he looked like he was ready, but was suppressed. That would have been the time to get him up, but with Anderson, it might not have worked, anyway. It is just as good an option as a Graham. That might have changed everything in his progression. As it wasn't tried.... as Seth says..... no way to know.... it is impossible to know.
  16. No..... I wasn't referring to anyone in particular. I can't say that I keep track that well of who says what, necessarily. Just a "if the shoe fits, wear it", I guess. I too would rather try it than not. Plus, with many young ball players, like Santana, some are ready for a while, and then they are not. But to just say that someone is not ready, like Berrios..... I find it is folly until you try and see. Many folks out here in LA said Corey Seager wasn't ready and needed more 'seasoning', but he is proving them all wrong for the Dodgers.
  17. I love the not ready yet camp. The only way you know if someone is ready... is to try it. Just look at the fallout of the prospect list to realize that the pundits that claim to know..... don't more often than not.
  18. Hey....... but Dozier and his mendoza line second half performance is still batting second........
  19. ....... and both are/were professional dancers. There are many that learn to talk very good english, no matter were they come from or what family they are born into.
  20. Good thing Kepler wasn't at his pitch limit or innings limit, and doesn't need to give his eyes a rest and be shut down. This should be interesting.
  21. Kepler sporting a .167 average in the series .... I hope he comes through a hero in game 5.
  22. Snubbing to motivate. The Bobby Knight school of motivation. Kind of like bullying. I, for one, am not a fan of it.
  23. I sure hope that the twins don't let the best manager go to manage another team, and keep the incumbent, ala the Vikings letting Mike Tomlin go and keeping Brad Childress. That would be a shame.
  24. Nice compilation of information and facts. People will draw there own conclusions, I guess, and implicate you of agenda beyond your presentation in ways that suit them, but I just want to say I enjoyed it and thanks for the work you did to compile it. I think the whole team could benefit hanging with Berrios during the off season, especially with the second half fades screaming at them to not repeat the things that don't seem to keep them going a full year.
  25. What is Molitor thinking? From a soft tossing lefty that the Angels were feasting on, to a soft tossing AAA righty? What was Achter doing in the game? It was like throwing the game in the second inning. Milone's luck has run out, Hughes is toast, Perkins is nowhere to be found, Duensing against righties the night before, and AAA O'Rourke tonight.... and now they serve up batting practice with Pelfrey tomorrow? Does Molitor want this Twins team to compete, or are they calling it a day? Opportunity after opportunity, and tanking. Tough to take. At least AAA Tonkin finally pitched well in the show. I guess that is something. Molitor's judgement is very suspect lately. I guess you have to hang on the fact that as this team blows opportunities, the mediocrity of the second wild card, whoever that will be, is still up in the air. Maybe it will even be Cleveland. ..........And maybe it will still be the Twins. I guess this still fits... because the title of the article is ..... Rookie manager decisions in Thursday's game
