  1. You mean.... you think that the Jays package was way superior to my example that the Twins could have offered, don't you? My original post was an example, not necessarily "the package" to be dissected, but an example of a package that would not "gut the farm", and deal with redundancies. I did enjoy the breakdown you gave, though, and thanks for that. Modify the package however you like. I personally think that you are undervaluing the Twins' players - like many undervalued Carlos Gomez and Francisco Liriano and Aaron Hicks and Trevor Plouffe on these boards - and are over valuing the Jays traded players (much like Meyer was overvalued by Ryan in the trade for Span). I mean.... the Twins paid about 50 million each for Nolasco and Santana, extended Hughes with 2 years left on his contract, and then there's the resigning of Pelfrey for the 2 years. The Twins seem to like redundancies, including the redundancies of middle of the rotation arms that can't strike people out but are hoped to eat innings (even though they really didn't/don't).
  2. And there you have it. Die hard fans have even trained themselves to not hope for anything extravagant. Nothing extravagant, please. I know these are my Twins. Just give me replacement level, and I will try to be happy. Maybe we can get to the playoffs and World Series again with a bunch of pitchers that maybe will have a good game sometimes, and utility players at the keystone. disclaimer: I am not putting words in the poster I replied to's mouth, or assuming he is thinking what my thought cloud made up.
  3. My point is that most/many are overestimating what it would have taken, and the result of what they took is the proof. There is so many redundancies in the Twins' system, and the point is to make some choices and use the ones not chosen to improve the real team, the only team that really matters, before those redundancies prove themselves to not be worth the gamble..... and most will. You have to hope your GM makes the right choices. Look at the great prospects we were bilked for in the Santana trade to the Mets, except for Gomez. And the Twins failed miserably developing the all star asset they had.
  4. hmmmmm..... I just looked at the date posted date.... Aug 06 2015 07:16 AM | Off The Baggy in Minnesota Twins Confusing, eh? Investigating, I see the article was actually in his blog on Aug 4. No biggy, I just thought it was funny, especially the 51-51 being 3 games above .500.
  5. When look at Hicks, I see this year as the one expected, and the first two partials as the ones that were unexpected. I didn't ever want to believe that he would not make it. I am glad it is happening in a Twins uniform right now, instead of him being run out of town by management and impatient fans.
  6. Just the conversation of being concerned about using one of Buxton's option years makes me cringe. Worried about whether the prospect can make it in The Show and holding the safety net of option years? If he needs all those option years, the Twins clearly made the wrong choice..... or the Astros made the right choice may be more accurate. Carlos Correa would sure look good in a Twins' uniform at short, eh?
  7. If Mauer would have retired after his concussion year, he would have been a lock for the Hall of Fame, I believe, even with his shortened career. With every game he plays at first, he is getting further and further away from that honor. If he plays now just to play out his contract, it will be a certainty that he will not get in.
  8. "The calendar has flipped to August, the Minnesota Twins are now 51-51, just three games above .500, and the problems are mounting." That's some fuzzy math, right there... even if you ignore that they are 54-54.
  9. Dozier is now back in the .240s along with Hunter, and Mauer is in the .260s. The vet leaders that are here are not really coming through. It would help for the ones we have to perform, too. I know that many have a love for Dozier that looks past his strikeouts and inconsistency. But he still belongs in this discussion. As the season wears on, it is time for them to step up and lead, not fade, and especially not all at once.
  10. Well...... in the case of trading for Tulo, it didn't take Berrios, Sano, or Buxton or two of the three. He was traded for much much less. Think choice of Arcia or Vargas, Kohl Stewart, Alex Meyer, choice of Escobar, Santana, Polanco, or Gordon.... and all you have done is given up redundancies that this team is not trading by the "best by" dates. Every team has untouchables. The Dodgers could still do trades without giving up players like Joc Pederson, and everyone wanted him. All of the players I mentioned still have tons of value, even though the Twins don't seem to know how to get it. Does Liriano have more value than Escobar? I think so, and the Twins with Ryan/Gardenhire/Anderson didn't know how to handle the talent. 2 down, 1 to go. Then things might change.
  11. Personally, I have never seen Shields as an ace. In his 9 post seasons series, he is 3-6 with a 5.46 ERA in 59.1 innings, including totally tanking in the ALCS and WS last year. That is not the kind of ace that the Twins' need. And he is almost 34 (in December)..........
  12. Always folks wanting to trade Plouffe. You culture a player, patience pays off, and then you don't want him anymore right when he is what you have always hoped he would be. Then the team is always strangers. Stats and strangers. I guess that is the way now. I don't have to like it. I can't help myself being a Twins' fan, even though I might not like the players that don't really seam like Twins.
  13. And Tulo was up for grabs, and went for a package that the Twins could have easily bested without giving up the farm. Ryan would have just had to make choices now about the redundancy before he lets the prospects "best by" dates expire. Instead, we will have to put up with Escobar and Nunez at short, and pretend they are acceptable....... and it could have been one of the best in the game instead, for several years to come. Great article, by the way...... and banging analogies.
  14. A shortstop like Tulo rarely ever becomes available. I have been in depression ever since Ryan didn't get him, or really even try. This idea that minor league depth wins major league games, or that any will become a star, is a way to be a minor league fan all one's life. There is only one of each position - it never serves a team well to let the assets go past their "best by" or "expiration" date. May as well make some choices and trade some of the leftovers and let them expire in/on another team's farm. Bye bye wild card, hello cellar? Yes, the season is not over yet, and our Twins are only 5.5 games out of last in the Central, and 7.5 games out of last place in the American league, but still tied for the last wild card, but with no improvements made to compete, and now the closer can't close a game. The Dog Days of August are upon us.
  15. Another horrible outing by Kohl Stewart. Unproven high school pitcher is still looking like he should have tried football instead. And picked at #4 overall. Tyler Jay is clocking in with a 7.56 ERA so far in High A. I guess we won't see him anytime soon, either.
  16. I am not bothered by the prospects that were traded, I am bothered about the reliever that was traded for. More of the same. No splash here. Not even a set of rings around were the pebble hit the water. This trade doesn't improve the team, it just allows Ryan to say he made a trade. This is so token it is trying to get a fare on the A train, but the train stopped taking tokens years ago.
  17. I just have more fun with the MLB team, especially when maybes become Tulo's..... or Hamels'.... or even Kazmir's....... way more fun (except that is just a fantasy here). To trade away 5 to ten maybes and lose one that became somebody, for 3 to 4 somebodies? I like my plan better, and find it way more fun when the team is winning because it has good to great players that prospects brought.
  18. I would like to trade Escobar for Liriano, because Escobar is just that good.......
  19. That is exactly why he has value. Like Meyer's value got Denard Span. Washington knew he was a wild card. So did Ryan. Ryan made that bet, and has lost it for 3 years.... so far. To wait is to have an untradable prospect, or devalued prospect - a devalued asset - like Vargas and Arcia and Meyer and Pinto have become.
  20. The trouble with Ryan, is that he never ever goes after a top player. Never. He goes after Pelfrey and Santana and Nolasco and Hughes (recently) and hopes they do better than they have been doing. And those are some of his better hires, when all the really horrible trades/signings (I know my examples weren't trades) are considered (the list is long). Twins' fans seem to have gotten so used to that, they talk themselves into liking the leftover players signed because they have no choice, because it is their team. It is hard for me to get excited about Ryan making a trade, because it is Ryan chosing the player.
  21. Whatever Perkins is doing, it certainly doesn't show, especially in his core, and all motion starts there, or should start there for optimum performance. Sure, some pitchers have given up taking care of their bodies and still perform for a while, but I wonder how good they could have been if they really cared and dedicated themselves to being the best they could be? Perkins' own take on his fitness practice leaves me somewhat doubtful he is even telling himself the truth. Plus, the older one gets, the more attention it needs. Hopefully he will have enough in the tank to get more "spin on the ball for late life", as he puts it, for the rest of the season. And hey.... Chapman is on the market for the future... you know.. the future just around the corner where all the prospects that are never traded when they have value actually become MLB players.
  22. Regardless of what happens now before the trade deadline, Terry Ryan should have never been rehired. Welcome to the move forward faction...... finally.
  23. I hear Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers singing on an endless loop..... and he is not talking about skydiving..... It is after the all-star break, and soft-bellied and out of shape Perkins may be spent even earlier than last year. He really could use a personal trainer to get and stay in shape to last a whole season.
  24. Too bad Tonkin just can't seem to carry over his performance in AAA to the Show. It is really too bad. Every chance he has gotten, he has been blown back down. I would love for it to click, but the clock is ticking faster and faster for him.
