So the only way to obtain players is thru the draft? Saying there is zilch on Falvey's side is just being obtuse. Drafting Chase Petty and trading him straight up for Sonny Gray who was an all-star, finished 2nd in Cy Young voting and was instrumental in the series clinching win against TOR in the playoffs last year is certainly something. The entire rotation were acquired by the current regime. I don't understand this notion that you need to draft and develop players to be successful. Why is trading for players such as Ryan, Gray, Lopez, SWR not seen in the same light as drafting? Also, this is the 8th season they have been here, 2020 was a shortened season where they were on pace to win 102 games. So in 6 real seasons, one season over 87 wins. But 3 division titles and a playoff series win. Current 10th best record in league, 2nd ranked farm system. I certainly feel better about the current squad and the future of the team than in 2016.

I'm not sure you can have two guys who enjoy excelling on the field more than Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis. Really hope Buck gets back out there soon. Since Correa has been here, I wonder how many times Buxton, Lewis and Correa have appeared in the lineup together. It has to be rare. It would be pretty awesome to have the trio together down the stretch. One can hope! Edit: I found it! The Twins' Big Three — all top-two picks out of high school in their respective draft classes — have more questions about their health than their talent. They all had a stint on the injured list earlier this year, and they've been in the same lineup together only 22 times over the past two seasons. The blank part is 22. 22 times in two seasons.

Just wanted to share this. Was out playing golf during the game. Started streaming it on my phone in the cart in the 8th, almost immediately before Jax blew up. Almost turned it off. I definitely had to apologize to the guys in my group when Royce homered, totally yelled in a friend's backswing off the tee. Worth it.

Not to ruin anyone's weekend but, since June 12th, which is 12 starts, Pablo's like looks like: 75.2 IP, 60H, 15BB, 77K, 2.38 ERA, .218/.268/.316. That's pretty ace like.

Braves (Fried) vs Twins (Ober): 8/26/24, 6:40pm
SwainZag replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Not the best start from Mr. Ober here. -
Based on what? Outside of straight fear mongering? Not adding money or one thing, but trading core players with salaries is a whole different ballgame. If it happens I'll eat my hat, but being nearly certain they would trade CC given the opportunity is pretty wild IMO.

Great win. Put the other two games behind you, take the off day and go back home. 2.5 back of Cleveland for the division, 3 behind NYY for the best record in the American League. 35 games left.

Twins (Matthews) vs Padres (King): 8/19/24, 8:40pm
SwainZag replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Twins stand a fighting chance anytime they can get the slew of lefties in there vs a right hander. I'm calling a multi-hit game for Julien tonight. That was a hard luck, and quite frankly bad call strikeout looking in the 9th that should been a walk. I'm just feeling a breakout tonight. -

Would love to see the Ober streak continue tonight! Might need good good stuff with yet another lefty on the mound. -
Reviewing the Jorge Polanco Trade
SwainZag replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To play devil's advocate, trading a player like Polanco was possible because of the depth at the position. With Julien having a breakout rookie year and Lee knocking on the door there were internal options. That's not mentioning Jorge's knack of missing plenty of games with injury, missing 56% of games over the past 2 years. Though I don't think anyone could say with a straight face they saw this big of a drop-off. Even with the Twins being contenders, he was a prime trade candidate, especially knowing now the budget constraints the team had. Santana filled a need at 1st base. AK was and still is unproven at 1st, though I think we all hoped he would breakout and be a mainstay at the pairing. No one knew Miranda would bounce back to an even better player than he was 2 years ago after his injury plagued 2023. Even Santana's "meteoric" rise this season, he has more or less matched his production from last year. On the JD Martinez front, with him strictly being a DH, it was probably a long shot the Twins would give him $12M knowing that Lewis, Buxton and Correa would most likely need days off in three field this season...and they all hit from the right side. With his current production and the money the Twins saved has to be considered a win right now, regardless of what the prospects do. As for the future, sure it could still go either way, but it's pretty hard to watch him struggle and think....man I wish he was in the Twins lineup everyday right now. Getting rid or Jorge and adding Santana could just be lucky timing, or they were savvy moves by the front office whom are both working out at the moment.- 63 replies

League use to be a factor, not sure when they changed it. I'll still surprised the Rangers didn't sell at the deadline. Still coming off the high from last year with the "we can go on a run" mentality might have been a factor though. Yates or Leclerc would have been fantastic additions.

Royals (Ragans) vs Twins (Varland): 8/14/24, 12:10pm
SwainZag replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
If Duran doesn't feel comfortable in a non save situation, you've got a big problem. He should be the guy you go to when you need outs. All of this is moot done the bats didn't show up today. I still don't have a problem using Duran in that spot. I have more of an issue letting Varland pitch the 6th. -

Duran came in with a 2 run deficiet with 3 innings left for Twins batters. Richards came in with a 3 run deficiet with 2 innings left to play. I would say they are different scenarios. -

Reviewing the Jorge Polanco Trade
SwainZag replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I mean....they gave Julien a great opportunity to seize the position and he struggled. Not making the trade would have made Julien a loser. It's kind of on his own shoulders. I don't see how the trade was anything but a positive for him, he just didn't take the reigns.- 63 replies

But he's not wrong. The article you posted was full of great information, but they studied the Top 20 picks only in the draft. That right there should throw a giant wrench in the data when throwing in a guy who was an 8th round pick. Also, right in the article, is word for word, "This doesn't prove any causation, of course - it could be that players promoted to the majors sooner develop faster, or just that best players get through the minors faster, or something else entirely. The fact is, Matthews did make it to the majors extremely quick, and in all intents and purposes IS an outlier, especially when comparing him against pretty much the entire draft class.

Guardians 2, Twins 1: Cleveland Wins it Quickly
SwainZag replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Tough loss. Cleveland played superb defense tonight, especially compared to the product they showed yesterday. The play Kwan made to force Jeffers at 3rd in the Third inning really set the tone. I'm not putting on Jeffers, but if he makes to third, Twins are looking at bases loaded no outs with 2-3-4 coming up. They get the force out and end up with zero runs. SWR was great. Take care of business tomorrow.- 45 replies

The comparisons on this thread are pretty crazy. Nolan Ryan was a freak. Rod Carew could hit at any level and in any season. Carew could hit .300 from 1890-2024, what does that prove? Using HOF of players to make comparisons to anything is dumb. I hate saying it, but any heavily arguing that players can do what guys did 40 years ago, just need to stop. No one is pitching 250+ innings, very few players are playing 150+ games anymore. Go ahead and call the managers out for babying, soft, etc. but it just isn't happening. The same people arguing players should play more are the ones upset that guys are missing games on the IL. It's a different game. Guys who had strained this and pulled that in the 80's aren't playing in games today than they were then. Cal Ripken probably played so many games at 50-70% and maybe less during his streak. I think that's awesome, today's players would call that reckless. Is Cal Ripken at 60% better than whoever backed him up at 100%? Not only in current game but long term? I think we would all love it if Correa, Buxton and Lewis could play 162 at a high level, but it's not going to happen. I wish it would! /rant

Max's value to the Twins was more than likely higher than what they could get on the trade market. At his best he's an above average bat while playing a very high level defense. But he is prone to those prolonged cold streaks. The 2nd half Max of last season gets the qualifying offer, I can't see it happening now.
