  1. Thanks for the update, Jeremy. Expect we will hear a lot about signings the next few days. Hopefully, those top three guys will get done and we know if they have any extra money. Speaking of extra money for some of those late picks. Didn't they likely use all/most of any money they can save for one of those early high school picks? Was it Winokur that was like $700,000 or $800,000 over slot?
  2. I like Sonny Gray, like him a lot. Also hope that they figure out a way to bring him back in 2024. But one of the best, no way. I lived in Wisconsin during my early life and will always be a Braves fan, well at least until they moved to Atlanta. So when thinking about big time pitchers, I immediately think about Warren Spahn. Spahn had 16 years when he pitched over 250 innings. He threw 382 complete games and 63 shutouts while pitching a total of 5,243 innings in his career. Heck, today everyone gets excited when a Twins pitcher pitches a complete game which has now happened twice this year. I guess by today's standards he wouldn't be considered great because he only struck out 2,583 hitters, or only 4 and a half per nine innings. He won 363 games while missing three of his best young years fighting with the Army in Europe, where he won a medal for heroism in the Battle of the Bulge. Now that is a pitcher who I think of when I think of the best. Sonny Gray is an asset to the Twins and a heck of a pitcher, but he ain't no Warren Spahn.
  3. After seeing Lee having 3 K's last night, did the same thing 2wins87. Checked his stats to see that he is well under 20% K rate this year. So just an off night! Was listening to Proud Mary while reading this. Got me thinking that this Cedar Rapids Club just keeps on rollin. What an amazing team, yet they don't have all that many of the Twins big name prospects. I know they won the first half of their season, are they again in first place? Didn't have a clue who this Whorff kid is. Checked and see he was signed a couple months ago out of independent ball. Granted he is a bit old for the FSL, 24, but sure looks like another find by their scouts? See that the DSL Twins don't have many hitters with numbers like last year. Heck, the Silva kid who got the big money is well under the Mendoza line. The Bass kid from Mexico looks like he might be a good one with an average over .300, well over.
  4. Those comments are really interesting. If he really believes what he said, he may be very happy with a short term deal, say two years. With the Twins being able to do a QO, they should be in the driver’s seat to resign him.
  5. Want to double down on Bigfork’s question, Seth. I recall that Miranda’s shoulder was barking in spring training. Have you heard anything about how it was after the season began? Is it possible that is the reason he has been such a disappointment at the plate this year.
  6. Thanks for the report, Seth, is really good having MiLB back after the break. Great seeing Raya with a superb outing, albeit another shorter one. Understand that is likely by design considering how little he has pitched in past years. Not surprised by the Wallner callup, but his D is still a concern. Looked at how the 3 runs scored last night against Varland. Inning began with an error in right field by Wallner. Didn't see the game, so I don't know the specifics. But Louie would have been out of the inning after striking out the fourth hitter of the inning. With Buxton as the every day DH, just don't see where Wallner will get his playing time unless his defense has improved. Also fantastic seeing ERod with a big night out of the break. As for Hitter of the Day, only one word to day...WOW!
  7. Sounds like a sharp young man with a nice fastball. Really like that his second pitch is a change up. Good news is the Twins didn't have to go too far over slot to get him signed. Seemed to me that he was the high school kid that might have been most difficult to sign versus going to college, other than the 19th and 20th round picks who will be long shots to sign. When I think of Waterford, WI and baseball I cannot get past thinking about the gal from there 55-60 years ago who married Dodger second baseman, Jim Lefebvre.
  8. I am shocked that the Twins are only 9% below league average in right field. Shocked! In most games it seems their right fielder contributes nothing. Are other team's right fielders having an off year so we don't seem all that bad?
  9. Kept reading this, JD, and stopped thinking about the players you were writing about. Kept thinking, isn't it the Manager and Coaches who should be teaching these players to be better at their trade, rather than seemingly total failures this year? Shouldn't the Manager and Coaches be motivating these players to be better? I don't have a clue how much blame goes to the players, but some also goes to the Manager and Coaches. Other than the pitching coaches, everyone else should be gone within a week of the season's end.
  10. Why do I see that comment so often? The one, "has hit OK till joining the Twins." Put me in the group that doesn't want to see the FO go out and make any big acquisitions. The Twins will be successful, or not, based on what their two big studs do the last 2.5 months of the season, Correa and Buxton. And hopefully, that includes Buxton playing in center field at some point. The lineup should also get a boost from Polo and Lewis returning over the coming weeks. Polo probably won't hit much better than Julien, but his defense should eliminate a couple mistakes/errors that would lose a couple games. Add an improvement from AK over the last few months and the lineup should be able to score enough runs to get those extra wins to win the division. But if Correa and Buxton play like the first half, nothing the FO can do will make a difference.
  11. Are you aware, Seth, of others who have needed TJ surgery about the end of the normal recovery time? Is it possible the original surgery wasn’t done properly?
  12. Does anyone know what surgery Prielipp is having? Is it related to his TJ surgery? Or something else?
  13. Everyone is speculating on what the Twins will do. What we know is that he has an opt out and if he isn't with the Twins, is it July 31?, he is either going to be with the Twins or gone come August. Interesting question, did the Twins get an option year when they signed him? Haven't heard, but would have been smart. You have done a great job of listing all the questions the Twins staff is facing over the rest of the season. Getting a proven veteran onto the staff sure helps answer some of those. With how well he is throwing at St. Paul, cannot believe he won't be one of the answers to those questions. Will Saturday be his last start for the Saints? Maybe, or maybe one more. Won't even begin to guess how he will be used with the Twins.
  14. Agree with weitz41’s concern over need to get some good catchers in the organization. Like most years, know nothing about the pitchers taken rounds 4-10. Crossing my fingers it turns out like the last few years and a couple turn out to be good ones.
  15. Interesting with so many high school kids. Were they clearly the best available? Or are the Twins focusing on getting another wave of talent 5-6 years from now? For those of you who don't know where Waterford, Wi is, it is down by the Illinois border near Racine. There was a gal from there, say 55-60 years ago who went to UW-Oshkosh who was drop dead gorgeous. OK, what's the baseball connection? I believe she married a Dodger infielder. Think he was a second baseman, but don't recall his name. Does Hall remind anyone else of Griffin Jax?
  16. Great article, Seth, thanks. I knew almost nothing about any of these, other than seeing that Jenkins was a high school kid who was included among the FIVE premier prospects. After reading this and other articles, seems to me the Twins got two high school kids who have high ceilings, heck, very high ceilings. That is great, albeit, they just graduated from high school and are at least four years away. Probably longer. Know nothing about the third pick and expect like most baseball draft picks, it is less than 50-50 he will ever play for the Twins or any other big league team. Over all feel much better about the Twins today than yesterday when I got home and turned on the game around the end of the fourth inning. Hopefully, Jenkins will develop as he has stated and is a future Hall of Famer. Who knows how Soto will develop, but sure sounds like he could be a front of the rotation guy rather than someone who is hoped to be a #5 starter someday.
  17. Got home this morning and watching my first game in almost two weeks. Cannot think of when I was as down about this team as I am today. Why would anyone get excited about tonight's draft? Or even care who they pick? I have 100% confidence that the Twins brain trust will 1) think they are smarter than everyone else and go thru some draft day gymnastics and screw up who they pick; 2) mismanage those they do pick; and 3) if one of the 21 players picked does turn out to be a great prospect, they will trade him away for an injured pitcher prior to his breaking into the big leagues.
  18. Not certain what to think of Miranda. I do know that the trade did not work well for the Twins. Had Mahle been pitching as advertised, wouldn't look that bad. Biggest problem may be how the Twins evaluate players they are trading for. Too many come over and immediately get injured. Will second the many comments above related to how poorly too many young prospects are hitting for the Twins. At some point, someone has to acknowledge that their coaching/hitting plan ain't working. Don't know who has the power and/or ability to change it, but at some point young Pohlad has to asks some tough questions and if no one else will act, he must do so.
  19. Item that caught my attention was Bechtold having a legit relief appearance. And it couldn't have gone better. Is it possible, or even likely, Seth, that this kid could earn a spot in the Twins bullpen? And if he does, could he double as the Twins third catcher? Baseball has been around for a long time, but I gotta believe that may have never happened. But the more I think about it, it is likely there was someone back whenever who did this.
  20. Most interesting observation for me today was Miller pinch running for Rosario. Is he that fast? Or is Rosario that slow?
  21. A catcher with a 1.067 OPS and he can't make the Top 5? Man, this is a tough crowd. Great seeing ERod have a big month and is Sabato teasing us? Or could he be turning the corner? Guess we will have to stay tuned and see how the next month or two go. If you include the walks, he struck out just a touch over 30% of his plate appearances. Is that a noticeable improvement, Seth? Sure seems that Wallner is telling the Twins I can hit wherever you put me. My question, Seth? Was the handful of ugly defensive plays I saw from him with the Twins late last year a problem? Or is he better defensively than he appeared, at least to me? Haven't seen him at all this year at St. Paul. Has his D improved? Thanks for a great report, Seth. Could Twins fans be so fortunate to have a handful of these guys take that last step and get it done on the big stage?
  22. Got a question. Would Arraez be flirting with .400 if he were still a Twin and coached by our hitting coaches?
  23. Over sure is starting July like a man slighted by not winning the award.
  24. Great article about Bechtold in today’s Strib, Seth. Talks a lot about a recent decision to have him begin pitching out of the pen. Said he is throwing 97.
  25. Loved this pick when made and had to do a double take when you said he is 20 years old. I would have thought he is at least a year older. Like the comparisons to Berrios, my only hope is that the one difference is that the Twins are able to extend him long-term.
