Just shaking my head as I read another shot at the Twins for not spending money. First, none of us know that the Jenkins signing was a protracted negotiation. Both the Twins and Boras are on record saying there was no problem getting it done by 4pm, Tuesday. We don't know, but the number may have been loosely agreed upon early and Boras and Jenkins took the time to deal with personal issues. Do we know if he moved his residence to Florida, like Joe Mauer did back when, to not pay any state income tax on the bonus? [I checked and North Carolina has a 5.25% tax] With a check this big, he likely spent time with both an attorney and investment advisor. I don't know if this was the case, but I suspect you also don't know it wasn't. All we do know is that he was in Minneapolis on Tuesday and signed his contract early afternoon. Thanks to those who pointed out that not only would the Twins be liable for the 75% tax, but also would lose out on revenue sharing. Combined with the actual dollars spent on the player, that is real money even for the Twins. As I read your report, I was hoping you did some checking to see which draft picks since the arrangement began, was it 2011?, didn't sign and if any of those guys have become players the Twins wished they had. I don't know if there are any. Or not. But considering how few players actually make it I would be surprised if more than one or two, if that, have turned out to have played more than a cup of coffee. I do know that they went over by a large amount for Julien and this year they went nearly double for was it the third round pick and a lesser amount for the kid from Wisconsin. Is it possible the Twins have a policy which leads to a better job of negotiating with all their picks so they have room to go over with the kids they really want, like the two picks this year, whereas other teams may not negotiate as well with the majority and are forced to go over the pool to sign those they really want?

5 Reliever Trade Targets on Expiring Contracts
roger replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
None of us has a clue what the FO will do and who, or if, they will bring in a reliever. After watching last night's game, hopefully, they will get one good late inning guy soon. Count me among those who would like to see them bring in a younger reliever with several years of control. There are several positions in the organization where there is a lot of talent stacked to block others. Corner outfield and middle infield are a couple. I don't know what the return would be for someone like Larnach or Wallner, if paired with a young pitching prospect. But I would prefer not spending trade capital on a two month rental.- 8 replies

Seems another day and another win for the Kernels. Unfortunately, you can also say another day and another loss for Wichita. Although he may have been a bit wild, seems like Reggie Grace is beginning to settle in at AA and is pitching more like he was before his promotion. Can say the same about Cossetti. Will we see both with the Twins in a couple years? Great seeing Polo at third and Thielbar on the mound. Will both be back with the Twins a week from now? After watching that ugly finish last night, sure need Thielbar...if he is anything like the pitcher we knew last year. But so sad to see the note that Martin left another game with an injury. This kid can't get a break, no pun intended. Sounds like the only people concerned with Jenkins getting signed yesterday were the fans. If this kid is anywhere near as good as he says he intends to be, he should be patrolling center field for the Twins by sometime in 2026 at the age of 21.

Interesting, they were $4,500 under their allotment and he signed for $4,500 over slot. So the Twins spent every dollar, and Boras can say I got the kid more than slot. Unfortunately, they weren't able to get extra dollars to sign either of the last two high school players. But they did sign the two high school kids taken in what was it, the third and fifth rounds...both to over slot and one way over.
-
Was thinking the same thing, Doc, as I checked several times a day to see if he had signed. Also thought they were a bit over, but just did the math. With everyone but Jenkins signed, they are actually under their pool, by a whopping -$4,500. So call that break-even. That means they can give him his full slot of what is it, $7,400,000 something? With Boras as his agent, I will be surprised if he is under. Would be great if they could get a couple hundred grand to see if they could entice that kid going to LSU. Expect they will follow the JC kid and try to sign him next spring for the $225,000 they can spend. Or is it $250,000 for JC follow picks? Considering this kid is going to get a check for over $7,000,000, I suspect the hold up is that he, Boras and his financial advisors are jumping thru a lot of hoops to minimize the tax hit on that check. I recall back when the Twins drafted Mauer, it was also held up. Reason was he was moving his residence to Florida to eliminate the Minnesota State Tax. This kid's from North Carolina and I doubt their taxes are as high as Minny, but there may be things like that going on. [Edit: just checked and North Carolina state tax is 5.25%. So if he relocates to Florida, where there is no state tax, he would have an extra $350,000++ in his investment account should they do that.]

Great seeing Dobber with another very solid outing. Sure seems like he is putting himself into the hunt for a long look next spring. Recall he was very solid that first season, however long ago that was. Looks like his finger problems are finally behind him. I know he had a long term contract, is it one more year? Or two? Some days it the pitching, yesterday the bats. But the Kernels seem to finish nearly every game with the same result...a W.

Another day, another 'W' for the Kernels. Some days they win with their bats, yesterday was with strong pitching. Gotta love that team and relationship the Twins have had with the City of Cedar Rapids since moving over from Beloit. See the DSL squad got shut out by the Yankees. Speaking of the Yankees, our old friend Ben Rortvedt was their catcher yesterday. Add me to the list of those waiting and wondering how the Kuechel situation is going to shake out. Expect they wanted him to get another start or two before making their decision and he/his agent went along with it. Also expect the trading deadline had something to do with it as they may be planning on opening a 40-man spot over the next week or so, thus they won't have to lose player X when they add Kuechel to their roster.

Very interesting discussion, and surprisingly long read. When looking at what this discussion is really about, Castro versus Gordon, I see an easy decision. Castro plays six positions, most very well and a couple even better. Gordon plays the same six positions, a couple ok, but he is brutal at several (shortstop and third). Its been awhile since seeing Gordon play, but doesn't Castro also have a much better arm? Castro runs the bases very well and steals a lot of bases. Gordon may have equal speed, but does he? If he does we sure haven't seen it as he doesn't attempt to steal bases very often. Yes, Gordon had a hot bat part of last year, but this spring seemed to be more what we should have expected. So Castro's bat is likely as good or better, AND he is a switch hitter. Seems to me an easy decision. Castro should be in the Twins plans moving forward, Gordon NOT. Damn shame Gordon is on the IL and can't be traded before the deadline. Hopefully, he will get healthy and the Twins can get something, anything for him over the winter because they sure as heck can use his 40-man roster spot for one of those kids many of you want playing every day for the Twins.

One of the more interesting aspects of last night's game to me was the brutal play in left by Wallner. The early ball near the wall was clearly in his glove and should have been an out. If I were the scorer, it would have been an error. Then I believe it was the fourth, he fielded a ball off the wall on the ground and let it roll out of his glove before he recovered. Didn't see it in live action, but was a clear misplay on the replay. If memory serves, I don't believe the runner got an extra base so there wasn't an error. And his diving catch was anything but smooth. Looked like he was gonna break his neck trying to make it. And all of you who want him playing over Keps only needed to watch the catch Kepler made behind Taylor on that deep drive to the gap. That was still a critical time in the game and had he not got it, who knows what would have happened.

If they are doing a deal like this, the headliner must be either Larnach or Wallner. After watching his brutal night in left field last night, I would hope it would be Wallner. Add a solid young pitching prospect from Class A or lower and that should be enough to get it done. Is it a must to do a deal like this, probably not. But it also would probably help this year and beyond.

Twins Minor League Report (7/20): A Little Bit of Everything
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Good seeing Martin with 2 hits for the Saints. Also interesting that he was in center field. Always get a smile when I see Palacios in a game against one of our minor league teams. Trading him even up for Odorizzi however many years ago was a fantastic trade. Which was the better trade with Tampa Bay, Palacios for Odorizzi or Cruz for Ryan? Also good seeing ERod with another big 3-4 night, as the Kernels just keep on winning. Keep'em coming young man. They won the first half. Are they also in first during the second half?- 10 replies

Interesting, kind of like Rod Carew found himself at first base later in his career. Question is, which lineup offers the better defense? Polo and first and Julien at second? Or Julien at first and Polo at second? I guess if it is the later, you could pull Julien late in games, move Polo to second and bring AK in to first. But wouldn't want to do that if the game was close and Julien was due up in the 8th or 9th.

Is exciting to see Varland have a good start after too many so-so at best outings. Expect most big league pitchers have been sent back to AAA to fine-tune their game several times before sticking in a starting rotation. Doubt Varland's name is written in ink as part of the Twins starting rotation for 2024, but should be one of two or three guys who will provide depth when spring training arrives. Saw what Lee did last night and was thinking he sure has been hot for awhile. See all the comments above, yet, no one mentions that exactly a year ago Lee was a brand new draft pick who was signing his contract and getting ready for his professional debut. Kid has come a long way and sure seems to have a fantastic future.
-
Only saw the last few innings last night. But while watching was thinking about Julian and where he plays once Polo and later, Lewis, return. Yes, Wallner is the easy roster move when Polo returns. But if Polo is at second, where does Julien fit into the lineup? The kid has to play and I don't see Rocco keeping Buxton on the bench for long. Could there be a move to first base, alla Arraez last year? AK could move to a corner outfield spot and play it well. So first base could be long-term solution, but this late in a competitive season?

Would be one of the biggest mistakes this FO could make. AK has played little to no baseball for the past three years. Now that he is finally healthy, he is developing into the player we always thought he would be. Come next summer we will see what that is. Why trade away a future star, who is currently inexpensive for an aging super star who is very expensive? Stupid in my opinion.

Seems like Dobber has been pitching well for awhile. Is it 4 earned runs in his last 22 innings? Expect most of us have forgotten that prior to his string of injuries, he was a very effective pitcher for the Twins that first summer he was called up. How long ago was that? Can he help the Twins staff down the road this year? Will he? If he is called up, would it be as a starter or for the pen? And who gets the call first, Dobber or Kuechel? Also seems to be another candidate to fill out their starting rotation next year when Gray and Maeda are likely gone. Always excited to see a blast from ERod. Have my fingers crossed that this kid is the real deal.

Thanks for this update, Jamie. Found it to be interesting. Those three starters from 2022 are certainly doing well. Heck, more than well. Don't know if any will ever pitch for the Twins, but if they could get one fourth or fifth starter out of every draft from late in the draft (say rounds 6+), that would be huge. Must agree I was somewhat surprised as I watched them draft college pitcher after college pitcher for seemingly the entire draft beginning with what was it, the seventh round?

Twins Minor League Week in Review (7/3-7/16)
roger replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The Strib talked about Prielipp's surgery today. They went in and repaired the UCL (I think) and put in a brace...whatever that is. Mentioned that it was not of the same magnitude as a complete TJ surgery. I don't know anything more, but hopefully, that means he can be back on the mound sometime next year. Maybe someone knows more about this. When I look at the Twins draft the last several years, Canterino and Prielipp stand out as potential top of the line starters. And today we see both out for extended periods with major arm surgeries. The Twins can't seem to catch a break and in both cases the damage was done before they were drafted. Hopefully, Canterino will be back next summer and maybe Prielipp will follow later in the year. We can hope, can't we?- 7 replies

Thanks for the update, Jeremy. Expect we will hear a lot about signings the next few days. Hopefully, those top three guys will get done and we know if they have any extra money. Speaking of extra money for some of those late picks. Didn't they likely use all/most of any money they can save for one of those early high school picks? Was it Winokur that was like $700,000 or $800,000 over slot?

I like Sonny Gray, like him a lot. Also hope that they figure out a way to bring him back in 2024. But one of the best, no way. I lived in Wisconsin during my early life and will always be a Braves fan, well at least until they moved to Atlanta. So when thinking about big time pitchers, I immediately think about Warren Spahn. Spahn had 16 years when he pitched over 250 innings. He threw 382 complete games and 63 shutouts while pitching a total of 5,243 innings in his career. Heck, today everyone gets excited when a Twins pitcher pitches a complete game which has now happened twice this year. I guess by today's standards he wouldn't be considered great because he only struck out 2,583 hitters, or only 4 and a half per nine innings. He won 363 games while missing three of his best young years fighting with the Army in Europe, where he won a medal for heroism in the Battle of the Bulge. Now that is a pitcher who I think of when I think of the best. Sonny Gray is an asset to the Twins and a heck of a pitcher, but he ain't no Warren Spahn.

After seeing Lee having 3 K's last night, did the same thing 2wins87. Checked his stats to see that he is well under 20% K rate this year. So just an off night! Was listening to Proud Mary while reading this. Got me thinking that this Cedar Rapids Club just keeps on rollin. What an amazing team, yet they don't have all that many of the Twins big name prospects. I know they won the first half of their season, are they again in first place? Didn't have a clue who this Whorff kid is. Checked and see he was signed a couple months ago out of independent ball. Granted he is a bit old for the FSL, 24, but sure looks like another find by their scouts? See that the DSL Twins don't have many hitters with numbers like last year. Heck, the Silva kid who got the big money is well under the Mendoza line. The Bass kid from Mexico looks like he might be a good one with an average over .300, well over.
