  1. Don’t like any of these trades. It makes sense that Polo heads the group leaving. But the guy coming should be a young guy with a year or part of a year experience as a starting pitcher. Something similar to Lopez, maybe a bit less upside.
  2. Interesting, Cory. Thanks for posting. I can't believe Boras would sign Miranda as a client if he didn't believe, 1) that he will be healthy; and 2) there is a very good chance he will be the hitter he was two years ago. Someone correct me if this is wrong, but Boras doesn't take players on who aren't expected to be good, does he? And if Miranda is their comeback player of the year, his right handed bat would be huge, HUGE! I expect we are going to be doing a lot of waiting this winter. Wouldn't be surprised if the Twins complete only one trade along with a few free agent signings. Could be former big leaguers on a minor league deal coming back from an injury. Or maybe a AAAA type player who they believe can be coaxed to another level. Likely a couple pitchers, both starters and relievers, and a fourth outfielder who can play center. Looking at their depth, gotta believe the player going will be Polanco. They just don't have the corner outfielders to allow them to trade Max. Add one of the younger pitchers, say SWR or pitcher X, in a deal and they could get back a quality young starter with some big league experience and 4-5 years of control.
  3. So what's your point, Greg? Should the Twins stop trading because some can be bad, real bad? Or should they go on a trading spree, trading most of their top players once they have been around 5 or 6 years? Didn't like the Young trade when they made it. But then I believe that defense is a huge part of the game.
  4. Was going to add a comment. After seeing what DocBauer said, go up two spots to read what I intended to say.
  5. Interesting read, Cody, thanks. Buxton and CC are the big names, players familiar to every fan in baseball. Hope like heck that when next year ends, with the Twins winning it all, these two were the duo that led the Twins to their championship. But odds are good that at least one of their top duo will be someone else. My bet would be it will be either Lewis or AK stepping up with a huge, HUGE, 2024 season for the Twins.
  6. Could not agree more, Hunter. Would like to remind everyone that Wallner has limited big league experience. And didn't he struggle the last week or so of the season and in the playoffs? If they are planning on his manning a corner outfield spot, it better be written into the lineup in pencil.
  7. Time for the Commissioner to get involved for "the good of the game." Also clearly time for a salary cap with rules prohibiting contracts like this.
  8. Don't see the Twins trading for any center fielder until late in spring when they know more about the status of Buxton for 2024. If he can play some/a lot in center, they don't need anyone with Castro/Gordon on the roster. As for your trades, sure glad you aren't in the Twins front office. The Farmer trade isn't a good one, the Polanco trade an outright disaster and the Julien trade even worse.
  9. Great article, thanks Ted. Seems Martin's play late last year has a lot of us excited about what is to come. I expect he will begin his season at St. Paul. Hopefully, he will play as well as he did late last year. That would make him the replacement needed when/if Buxton is out for some time. I see Castro and Gordon as the fill ins when Buxton needs a rest early in the season. That's assuming Buxton is able to be their opening day starter in center who plays at least 4-5 games a week. But sure like the idea that Martin could come up and hit for average with a lot of walks for a big OBP. Add in the speed and D and he can be a big part of the Twins future.
  10. Every year we believe the Twins need to sign at least one good free agent reliever. Every year spring training comes and they didn't do it. Hope like heck it is different come March, but am fearful it won't be. Expect it is realistic to hope that either Alcala or Balazovic will step up. But can we count on that? Regardless of what they say about Canterino, considering how long he has been out and how little he pitched the past several years, he isn't going to get to the Twins as a starter in 2024. Sure, stretch him out in spring training and have him start in the minors the first couple months to get some innings. But I would think he would be most valuable by moving to the pen around Memorial Day and joining the Twins bullpen before the break. Continue to believe that young man can, and will, be special.
  11. One never knows how these kids will do as they attempt to take that last step. Hope like heck that one of them will be next year's version of Ober or Varland. Interesting that you don't have Canterino on this list. Still believe he has the highest upside of any of these guys. On the other hand, I don't see him as a starter this year if they want to get him to the big leagues. Won't have the innings, so moving him fast as a bullpen guy makes sense. Doesn't mean he can't get stretched out in 2025. Great topic, Nick. Let's cross our fingers that they get that next pleasant surprise.
  12. Thanks for another great read, Seth. I didn't know a lot about this guy when he arrived last fall. As I think about the pen for next year, he remains one guy I forget about. Do the Twins need a second lefty? Yes. Can it be Funderburk? Don't know why not. Do you think he has what it takes to be better than average in any of several roles next year?
  13. Puzzled by your comment that the Twins have 38 palyers on their reserve list. Assume you are talking about the 40-man roster. Thought 38 wasn't right, so I went and counted to confirm they have 36 on the 40-man. So lots of room to add several players over the winter As for players coming back from injuries. If they could be so fortunate to get full seasons from both Buxton and Lewis, it would be huge. Will consider Buxton having a full season with say 110 games in center and another 15-20 as DH. Add a full season from either AK or Miranda, and the Twins will be good, very good. I know that I, as I expect many of us have, forgot how good Miranda was two years ago. No question his injury had an effect on his performance all last year. A healthy 2022 version of Miranda would be huge.
  14. I prefer to deal with the team they have.
  15. Did I miss something? Isn’t Farmer still a Twin?
  16. Was pleasantly surprised last winter/spring when the Twins brought in the four vets and Castro. The important fact looking forward is that the two most productive of the five, Farmer and Castro, will be back in 2024. That is unless the Twins move Farmer in a trade. With the young players who broke in last year and others on the horizon, there shouldn't be a need to go outside the organization for depth. The one comment you made that didn't sit well with me was the comment about Martin that he had, "a wildly successful season." Martin had a nice year at AAA, but I wouldn't call it wildly successful.
  17. Interesting topic, Nick. All here are avid fans who are involved in what is happening on a daily basis. But isn't the average fan hardly aware of what's going on? The corporate execs who buy the boxes and spend the big bucks aren't thinking about what their payroll will be. Expect they have been told the team believes they can be just as competitive with a smaller payroll in '24. Those guys are all businesspeople and understand what is necessary due to the tv problem. Expect there is a large percentage of fans who attended games in '23 that aren't thinking about what everyone here talks about daily. Still don't know why they did what they did, and doubt we will ever know. I just hope that a lot of guys are healthier in '24, the Twins compete and most of all, I can watch the bloody games on tv.
  18. Liked what he did last year and was hoping he would return. But $16M +, whoa nellie!
  19. Great post, Cody. And interesting discussion, very interesting. I hated losing Arraez, but understood it. Wouldn't like losing Julien, but for a similar return sure would understand. The great news is that they still have Polo for the next year or two and Lee on the horizon. Could continue being very good at second base while filling the #2 or #3 slot in the rotation. My preference would be getting a young leftie with at least 2 years of control and then extend him for three or four. That would keep Louie in St. Paul to fill in when one of the starters needs a break. Highly likely Paddack is going to need a couple weeks during the season to keep him strong for the playoffs. Varland could fill that spot and then move to the bullpen come September like this year.
  20. Very interesting. Will sit back and watch all the bad mouthing on this and other sites, waiting for the front office to do whatever they will eventually do.
  21. Very interesting option. My question? If the Twins have such a great environment for pitchers, why has it been so hard to entice free agents to sign here?
  22. Was thrilled to see the above comment about the shift and other factors getting into his head. The result was he was not the hitter he could be. It was a mental thing. With last year’s changes, it took the first half of the season to retrain his brain and become the hitter he was capable of. Another fact I have not seen mentioned was a comment from him when he signed his current contract. Don’t recall the exact comment but it was along the lines of being shocked at how much he was being paid to play a game. I believe it was also indicated he would play for less. So don’t discount his signing an extension for a lot less than the numbers being thrown around above.
  23. It may have been discussed here, but the Twins and his agent have said he is staying at third.
