    I don't know if the Twins can get Alvarez for Dozier. That may be unrealistic. That said, if the Twins are going to get Alvarez, it wouldn't be a 1 for 1, and they could probably add a Brock Stewart in that deal. Hypothetically. Or, at least, another pitcher in the lower levels.

    Plus, really, let's say Falvey's training methods help develop pitchers at a better rate than we have, since, well, forever. That is going to be noticeable probably not this year, but in the coming 2-3 years. Adding someone like Yadier Alvarez (I'm not saying that is possible, just saying) along with a Fernando Romero, or a Kohl Stewart (with new techniques) or Gonsalves or Jay etc, along with #1 overall pick, comp round A pick and #1 pick in the 2nd round. Well, let's just say, hopefully by 2018 or 2019 we are seeing real change to the pitching staff in one form or another.

    Or, to piggy off Brandon Warne's post from about a week ago or so, why not target someone younger who has already had a season or so in the majors who took some lumps already? Archie Bradley would be PERFECT for this team, and would absolutely be cheaper than acquiring someone like Urias.

    I think if the Twins want to acquire a potential future ace, they have to look more at guys like Yadier Alvarez, who is also in the Dodgers system. Yes, Urias is closer to being an ace, but for the Twins to acquire someone who has that potential, they have to look a rung or two lower in the minors to find someone to mold. I don't even know if the Dodgers would trade Alvarez, but he absolutely has the build, along with a plus fastball and a plus slider, to potentially be that top of the rotation guy in maybe 2018 or 2019.

    Are we certain the Nationals offered Giolito, Robles AND Lopez? I thought I'd heard it was either Giolito OR Lopez, but not both.

    I can be swayed either way on Gibson and Escobar. I know the previous regime had a lot of pull with Gibson (they drafted him) and I know that Escobar is an easy call if he is healthy. But man, they certainly didn't do anything last year to make anyone think that a full bounce back is in the cards. I could also see Santiago being traded for a non top 100 A ball pitcher with any level of upside before Friday. He is certainly a better option as a #5 starter than, say, Andrew Albers or Pat Dean, but if the Twins need an emergency starter this year they will have Mejia/Gonsalves et al including anyone they acquire in trades. I think Kintzler and Pressly are easy adds. They don't make much, and you can always trade bullpen arms. Pressly's slider spin rate is almost as high as Andrew Miller's, and if he starts to throw it 35-40% of the time, he will be much more difficult to hit.

    I read that Ryan Pressly's slider has a spin rate that is the 2nd best spin rate of any slider in baseball, to Andrew Miller. He certainly didn't throw it as often as Miller did. If he throws his slider more, he should be more difficult to hit. And hopefully May is given every chance to turn into a #3 starter.

    Vargas isn't out of options anymore, the twins were granted a 4th option year for him this past week. That said, he hits lefties really well and is just ok against righties. If they wanted to pair someone with him who hits righties really well (say, Mauer?) that would be a useful spot at 1st. They could also let Park be the dh in that role too

    Love this idea for 1 year deals. A 1 year deal does absolutely nothing to either stunt a prospect's growth (if the prospect is ready) or hurt the long term ramifications of the team. If you can turn a 1 year deal into a controllable asset at the deadline, you do that EVERY time. Should be fun to follow!

    I think pretty high. Dozier is a valuable commodity, and other teams will be offering similar packages. It's not like the Twins have to GIVE him away (even if I want them to find a good deal.)

    But wouldn't it be better to get a 20 or 21 with upside who could be more than a platoon player in 2018 or 2019? Then, if you have that (instead of Van Slyke) you can always sign Rajai Davis (or comparable) to be that guy for this year?

    1) I don't love acquiring older players in a Dozier trade (van slyke is a year older than Dozier is, and if he is just going to be a 4th outfielder, facing only lefties, I'd rather acquire a 21 year old with upside who will be at Cedar Rapids or Fort Myers next year. 2)I also don't love stripling, but if the front office likes him I am good with that. 3) I hate having May back in the bullpen. I think he is a better starter than Gibson and Santiago, and maybe Mejia. I would have high hopes for Berrios and DeLeon (who if this is how it played out, would absolutely be in my rotation day 1, along with May and Santana. 4) I hate the "upgrade" of Avila to catcher. He is worse at pitch framing than Suzuki has been. If the front office wants an upgrade, and they can't get Castro (who, I say, who cares about payroll, get him to whatever contract he wants and figure it out later on) I would rather trade for an Austin Barnes or Derek Norris before going with Avila. 5) I would love an extra signing for the bullpen and for the field, preferably outfield or ss. That's just me. Thanks for putting this out there!

    But even if a catcher can hold their own offensively, if pitch framing and defense are the most important aspects of the catcher position, then are you really ok with one of these guys being the starter? I mean, Geovany Soto was almost league average (-1.0) but even JR Murphy was higher than that, in terms of pitch framing. Avila and Iannetta were far worse than even Suzuki was in that regard.

    If we look at JUST pitch framing stats (something I think Falvey will say is important for his catchers) of this tier, Jeff Mathis is the only one who ranked as above average last year with the Marlins. He, at 4.4, is pretty well above average, and I'd be ok throwing him a 1 year deal if the Twins miss out on Castro and/or don't trade for someone else. http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php Mathis is pretty poor offensively. His 3% walk rate last year makes even Eddie Rosario look good. But, as a backup catcher (are we comfortable having Garver/Murphy be the starter?) he would help mentor on pitch framing at least. That said, I'm still on the sign-Castro train. Hopefully that works out.

    I don't understand why you would keep Zack Jones and not Engelb Vielma; simply for his glove he could have a spot somewhere. Jones on the other hand already has been picked and returned; do the Twins really lose much if they lose Jones a 2nd time?

    I liked this article. Thank you for posting it. There is always hope. I don't know if the Twins will allow for Rosario and Plouffe to get the available playing time to fully bounce back. If they sign a veteran outfielder, don't you think Rosario is the one to take a platoon/bench spot? And Plouffe, I don't know how much I believe he will be on the team come April, but we'll see. If he is healthy he can contribute, but at what cost to the rest of the roster?

    Unless you want to get Soto and pair him with Castro? Soto does hit lefties really well for his career, something Castro does not. Then the twins could give more time to Murphy and Garver in aaa.

    I don't see what Geovany Soto adds to this team, other than he was born near the same place in the world that Berrios was. I would be disappointed if this were the twins offseason
