  1. Yeah, I guess I ask this question every year, but have the Wolves ever drafted higher than their reverse standings ranking would call for? I think their pingpong ball has literally never come up. Meanwhile we get treated to the spectacle of the Orlando GM's face lit up with mock shock at coming up #1 yet again.
  2. Zero interest in collecting those. Zero. The grownups with their binders killed it.
  3. Ever since Sidd Finch didn't make it I have tried to stay emotionally unattached to prospects, but with a gun to my head I suppose I'd be uncreative and opt for Buxton as the guy I check on the most.
  4. I've got a buddy who played the game who calls those analysts who never played the game 'propeller heads.' Any chance he's talking about our own Torii Hunter?
  5. I like the several references to "community" in this thread. The word probably best sums up what the moderators are trying to achieve here.
  6. If Herrmann's the team's backup catcher, it'll be because some kind of emergency has arisen. Dropping Fryer from the 40-man leaving only two players with "catcher" attached to their name, on the closest thing to an official roster (http://www.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=min), tells me Pinto is the backup. Barring some kind of trade or major pickup, obviously.
  7. But "trading high" has the corollary risk that after awhile you accumulate a collection of players you can't trade because they aren't performing. I don't think a GM can go in with a strategy of trying to outfox his peers on the other teams, unless he is *very* confident in his talent and assessment. Because with one or two exceptions, the other guys know who is playing over their heads too.
  8. Fast moving rumor. A later update (below) indicates Myers wouldn't be in the package, but the interest in Hamels is legit. Did you have a different source? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/padres-have-discussed-trading-myers-for-hamels.html
  9. The fact that they traded May to us in the first place makes this an odd combination IMO.
  10. Meh. I don't expect his Petco Park numbers to carry over. But it's not a big investment in case he flops.
  11. Youth and beauty are ephemeral, but inexperience can last a lifetime. Just as well. He would have gotten himself banned here almost immediately.
  12. In a vacuum, say if Philly was doing a complete fire sale and the Twins were the only taker for Hamels, I'd snap him up. The salary and contract length are IMO favorable, and if the payroll now becomes over budget another trade could eventually be cooked up to relieve whatever pressure there is. But in a world where Amaro will expect significant value back and there are 28 other teams that might compete, I'm not sure I would go as high in terms of an offer as every other team. A straight Meyer for Hamels deal would be OK with me, some combination like Nolasco plus Darnell plus assorted prospect/suspects likewise. I would prefer pitching for pitching rather than deal away high-ceiling position players in this case. And I don't expect to actually win this auction.

  14. The moderators are mindful of most mixed metaphors and make many measured moves. Although, alliterations are always acceptable.
  15. Quentin doesn't fill any current need. Pass. Seth Smith, for no logical reason, has always been one of my least favorite players. My recollection is he crowds the plate. Or maybe I was just mad the Twins pitchers didn't move him off it.
  16. I posted the link to the HoF rules, in part because the voters are empowered to consider non-statistical criteria as well. Sportsmanship, character and integrity are specifically mentioned. I think these two candidates in particular are going to be blackballed for the foreseeable future.
  17. Also of value, I think, is this page from the HoF, which lays out the ground rules that voters are expected to follow. http://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/bbwaa-rules-for-election
  18. Looks like a new and different kind of spam attack. I think the mods have caught up for the moment. Hopefully Brock can think of a new layer of protection.
  19. Max Patkin always carried enough lumber. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f1/Max_Patkin_1967.JPG/205px-Max_Patkin_1967.JPG
  20. This post is awarded 0.007 colorless green ideas sleeping furiously. Which might be a pretty good score, or not.
  21. To the extent that a Colabello type is needed....
  22. The Giants didn't give up much - a starter who doesn't seem to project to anything special, and a run of the mill reliever who strikes out a lot of guys at single-A. The space between this trade and the earlier Donaldson trade is so vast that it gives hardly any guidance as to what Plouffe would bring, except "more than the one, less than the other."
  23. You'll buy respected, but want honest specified too? OK, consider it added. Anyway, Ryan has been known to slip the needle, or at least damn with faint praise, so I'm inclined to take him at face value here. I'm certainly not enough of a fundamentals scout, to try to dispute his words.
  24. Anyone? An experienced and respected scout, albeit one who has an incentive to try to shore up whatever remaining trade value there may be?
  25. ftfy / as with most ftfy's, what you said was perfectly fine of course, and I'm just messin'. "... Nice guys. Last place." If I recall correctly.
