  1. Or vice versa.
  2. I got that saying from a fortune cookie, so if you're familiar with the game based on reading those, maybe you're right.
  3. You are correct about assumptions, and while I liberally sprinkled "I think" and "possible" in my post, an extra one can't hurt. I agree also that if they ramp up, he's well placed to coordinate; and I left out but hopefully it's inferred that I think he's probably smart. That said, the secrecy also fits the pattern I was describing; sometimes it's well to keep quiet if your steps are still tentative.
  4. If you're worried you can't give your money away, we should talk. Ones aren't beneath my dignity where donations are concerned.
  5. Further evidence for the saying "be careful of what you measure, for that is all you shall get".
  6. FWIW, I don't think Jack Goin is an expert on analytics. Goin is a guy in the organization who has the right temperament and no prior expertise and was tasked to keep tabs on what's going on in the analytics world and report back, and apply some methods where he can. I think he's capable of telling Terry that defensive stats are half cooked. I don't think he's capable of suggesting how to finish the recipe. So in that light, it's quite possible that what you're suggesting is exactly what he's telling Terry, and no more, and that's a missed opportunity. I had a similar role once or twice in my career, and it's how business people operate. It can be successful, but also can carry you only so far.
  7. To make room on the roster, they'll of course need to release Eduardo Nunez.
  8. He might still be a little too low in the minors, but I'll throw out Max Murphy as a breakout candidate.
  9. Teens apply their customized home-and-away factors, while spouses have the option of considering "Above Replacement Level".
  10. Some people count the eggs, some people count only the chickens, and maybe the front office is splitting the difference here?
  11. Don't you think we should ask for *more* than a million RBI? A million RBI isn't exactly a lot of run production these days. Miggy alone makes over 9 billion RBI a year!
  12. With Torii the roster is at 40. How long before the draft must a spot be freed up - or is it already too late? (I know it's too late to protect anyone they already had.) Dropping someone means giving other teams a shot at taking him, so it surely can't be absolutely at the last minute.
  13. This was his internal cue, IMO, that either this wasn't the time and place for the question, or else it's so important that he should just ask it (whatever his actual question was) forthrightly. He knew something was "off" about doing it. He split the middle, thinking he was being delicate, but it just came off awkward to me. I still don't know what his question was. "Uh, gay marriage, and Arkansas governor, and your FA market value, and stuff. You still going to be doing that?"
  14. See? That's why it was so much tougher to pitch then. All that pressure. Pitchers today have it easy.
  15. I actually found it pretty rambling, in real-time. Lots of pauses groping for words, like he was dancing around what he really wanted, leaving me to guess that what he wanted was "here's a controversial topic, wanna say something foolish?" Torii didn't take the bait, and then... at the last moment he did anyway.
  16. One of the interview questions with Terry Ryan at the Torii Hunter introduction press conference was, "are you surprised it [he?] took a one year contract?". Terry twitched and suppressed a smile and basically used every single one of his facial muscles before replying "no". http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/12/04/twinsights-terry-ryan-defensive-metrics-twins-ignore/ (Second short video in the sequence.) My reaction is that, while poker is not my game and I am terrible at it, if by chance he and I were ever at a table, I'd be looking for that "tell" sometime when he raised.
  17. Great photo, BTW. He offered a comparison to Britney, but I think he sells himself short. / not
  18. Yeah. I took another look comparing Happ vs Milone, and came away even more convinced to give Milone some more chances with the Twins.
  19. I don't think expiring contracts have brought much in trade ever since they changed the draft compensation rules. The draft pick no longer goes along with the player - *poof* goes the value.
  20. When I think of guys who build up a HoF resume more due to longevity than sheer brilliance, the test I ask myself is if I would have taken my kids to a game and said, "watch this guy, he's a future hall of famer". Circular, I know, but I can't give Torii the thumbs up. Hall Of Very Good, as has been said of many candidates.
  21. "You know what you are doing, everything’s working for those two, three, four or five starts" Does anyone remember which five consecutive starts DeVries might be talking about? / Channeling my inner Mike Berardino, by being a p-word. Seriously, this was a very nice interview, with great questions, and Cole sounds like a super solid guy. And without checking I'll bet Cole had some nice 5+ game streaks at AAA.
  22. Happ is no Cy Young candidate, but if Seattle got him for Saunders, I don't think Milone alone would have gotten it done. / need to include Duensing, duh
  23. Sadly, it might wind up in the discussion anyway. / not that my groan-inducing thread starter is one to be proud of
