  1. And yet, teams have to make decisions all the time - this player or that player, how much to offer, etc. Maybe you use some different word than projections, to describe how they do it. And I might add, semi-donning my moderator's cap, that this digression probably deserves a thread of its own if someone wants to carry it further, especially given that the topic of the thread itself remains active and of interest.
  2. Aren't relievers about the easiest parts of the roster to move, if and when the desired state of "logjam of talent" occurs?
  3. Displaying digits after the decimal point: shame on them. Paying any attention to digits after the decimal point: shame on you. If they think there is any value in what they do, it's not what comes after the decimal point. Judge them on that. (Which, I assume, is actually what you are doing - just not saying.)
  4. Here's a list someone came up with a while back: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090118165605AAb4hf8 Gene Bearden comes closest to "famous", after the two you named.
  5. I meant to comment on this before (I realize you are re-posting this tongue in cheek). Joe grounded into 12 double plays in 2014. That ties him for 85th in the majors. Renowned rally-killer MIguel Cabrera had 21. It took 31 to lead the majors. Mauer played only 120 games, so if you pro-rate to 160 his total would be 16 (tied with world-class bum Giancarlo Stanton) - that would rank him a little higher, but many of the guys above him didn't play 150+ either.
  6. Rating the team's offseason before the Winter Meetings are even complete seems a tad premature.
  7. Yeah, but in fairness, that's how he always did it.
  8. Twins have 20 pitchers and 20 hitters on the 40-man, after adding rule-5 pitcher Graham. I assume a pitcher will go, to make room. A trade in the offing? (Duensing, Nolasco?) If not, someone is exposed to waivers - maybe Thompson? With teams' 40-man rosters filling up, maybe it's easier to get someone cleared now.
  9. I expect Aaron would be very reluctant to express himself publicly about this, at least until he establishes some on-field success, but it would be a fascinating discussion to have with him strictly off the record. And maybe having Torii on the team will matter.
  10. That isn't what was said in your deleted post.
  11. So there's a chance we won't be able to give away our money?
  12. OK, but my point was that they'd only sign one, and it would be linked to another roster move that they've kept under wraps. I'd be shocked and horrified if they signed both Vogelsong and Kendrick, for example, and not particularly pleased if they signed just one and didn't move another mediocrity to compensate.
  13. I guess I'll repeat myself by saying that one way this makes sense if the Twins have a deal lined up to move Nolasco, and it hinges on first finding a lower-cost innings eater to replace him. Some fairly interchangeable names have been linked to the Twins this off-season.
  14. I moved this thread to the Sports Bar area; hopefully everyone who wants to can find it. My glancing through the posts revealed little MN Twins content, and the subject transcends either MLB or the minors for that matter. Moderation standards tend to be a little more relaxed in Sports Bar threads, so my motivation is to foster a maximally open discussion - with respect of course.
  15. On the contrary, I think this is the kind of contract Ryan would love to sign a top talent to, if it were in the FA market. He swallowed hard and gave Nolasco 4 years. It's the 6+ year contracts that end any discussions before they start, for him. Giving up significant talent to obtain this contract is the likely deal-breaker for the Twins unless Amaro really is doing a fire-sale. But I don't see the contract as an issue whatsoever. Indeed, the present Hamels contract would end just when some of the young arms might start (collectively) to be expensive.
  16. Likely? If only there were a place to look such things up. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/split.cgi?t=b&lg=AL&year=2014 League-wide, batters had a .341 BA on first pitches put in play, if I'm reading that correctly. Overall BA was .253. League wide, it looks like about 10% of PA were decided on the first pitch. For Mauer, it was only 5%. So we're not imagining that. However, the ratios of 1-0 versus 0-1 pitches look about the same for Mauer as for the league, so (again if I'm not misinterpreting) it's not as though Mauer is just standing there looking at strike one, PA after PA. It's really unclear from the stats that swinging more at the first pitch will solve anything. Pitch recognition and selection would seem more the issue, based on the higher number of strikeouts and the way he looks when making those strikeouts.
  17. Berardino asks Ryan to debunk the rumor that Berardino basically created out of whole cloth. Material for two days' columns. Next up: Ryan may be in on Kershaw, after calling him a "pretty darn good pitcher".
  18. If he stays on their 40-man up through Opening Day I'll gladly retract my speculation about Toronto's good faith in claiming him.
  19. Or, "when". The mid-to-late-60s were brutal on raw offensive stats. Or, "how long". Had he been born in the US his minor league seasoning might easily have happened quicker and he'd have had a couple more good major league seasons at the front end. Not to mention the injuries that made him a shell of his former self very suddenly instead of a more typical decline phase.
  20. Agreed that a player of interest to multiple teams won't have this happen. But if there's just one team with 40-man space, and they use it to park him temporarily, and then waive him, the original team won't grab him (assuming he was their 41st most preferred player). It's an oddity that the last team gets to keep him in that scenario. The 40-man and waiver system is designed to keep big-money teams from holding scads of good players hostage due to a deep farm system, not to keep a team from holding onto its marginal players. Maybe Toronto will fool me and decide he's the missing piece for their pennant run. Then my side comment is moot. Cola had no place to play on the Twins, without taking away plate appearances from equal or better bats. Let's remember to revisit this if Toronto waives him.
  21. My bet: Toronto waives him off their 40-man sometime before Opening Day and they get to stash him in their minors. This aspect of the waiver system is broken and needs a tweak.
  22. What is it with Toronto claiming Twins players?
  23. Either that bar table is on a slant, or else I've already had too much to drink and it's not even 1 pm my time!
