  1. Since that point of view amounts to valuing looks over personal attributes, and is considered shallow (at least when I do it ), I'm not sure this analogy goes in the direction you hoped.
  2. http://i.ytimg.com/vi/cbWs1oakDME/hqdefault.jpg "One of these things is not like the other one..."
  3. Moderator's note: Then start a new thread?
  4. Count on the message suddenly changing. That should fix the problem.
  5. Too bad if Terry Ryan didn't think to front-load the deal.
  6. It somehow rubs me the wrong way to move younger players (flawed or otherwise) because of a one-year signing of another player.
  7. There was a little snafu in trying to move or merge some articles, if I remember correctly. It would take an act of Brock to fix the mis-attribution. Maybe send him a PM if you want it cleaned up.
  8. Though, with Aaron Thompson, Chris Colabello, and Chris Parmelee on the 40-man, they have a wealth of choices, don't they?
  9. So, Arcia in left and Torii in right? Or does the veteran switch positions? How's that going to work out?
  10. I attended one game in Oakland where Milone pitched against our Twins. I will forever be grateful to him for demonstrating to my satisfaction that Pedro Florimon is not a major league hitter. He can have a roster spot on my team for as long as he likes.
  11. They spotted a flaw in his release point and hope to add 2-3 MPH to his fastball. /obligatory
  12. It's a nice Hot Stove kind of thread. And I think my view was altered a bit after reading the back-and-forth.
  13. He could start to pronounce his name sher-ZAIR. What if Lester started wearing a beret or something? Or struck batters out strictly on an ironic basis and used only organic baseballs, like Hipster Kevin Slowey? Would that give him enough pizzazz?
  14. The US Congress is now involved?
  15. Moderator's note: This is a discussion thread about a particular trade, becoming derailed by an extended side topic of Billy Beane's body of work, segueing into a comparison to the Twins' GM, and becoming rancorous as a result. Please start a separate thread if you want to discuss these broader matters. (And just to be clear, tangents themselves are not usually a problem when they continue to relate directly to the topic. Donaldson versus Lawrie defensively, fine. Factors underlying this trade, fine. But, Beane has never lost 90 games, the value of making the postseason versus winning it all... let's stick to the topic.)
  16. Dock Bower makes some interesting points here. Is spelling the main criterion, or is mangled pronunciation of guys like Arcia of value? You mentioned Borjuss in that context. Missed an opportunity by not promoting Mientkiewicz to the manager's spot. Rumor is that Shark is available for trade, and a battery of him and Salty would be good.
  17. Moderator's note: We ask that you avoid making things quite so personal. Which, as it happens, is also why we ask that posters not tout their own credentials too much. Please just keep such discussion to the facts and opinions as you see them.
  18. Guess I'll be the contrarian here and expect that in a few years we'll look back at this as a good trade for the As.
  19. Starts to overlap with Groucho (Marx, not Goryl) and his old dictum that "I don't care to belong to any club that will have me as a member." We shouldn't hire anyone who would take the job.
  20. They've had since 2011 to revisit that decision. For another team to want to start him, two things have to happen: their talent evaluators have to think the Royals' talent evaluators are wrong (this overlaps the coaching aspect of correcting something they think they see), and their GM has to think his evaluators are better than theirs.
  21. If the Nats (apparently) can't extend him, what's to suggest the Twins could?
  22. *shrug* That's probably so. I just thought it was more pointed in the case of Vavra than average. Maybe not.
  23. I agree you shouldn't sign a guy just as a "make up" for a previous mistake. You sign him because the previous mistake (if such it be) caused you to rethink your reasoning.
  24. I'd go along with this (as well as being surprised if they actually reached that kind of conclusion on him). Talent evaluation, in all its manifestations, is the single most important thing a front office must do. You can be lousy at negotiating contracts, and so forth, but if you can get the evaluations basically all right, you'll be OK. Easier said than done, I know.
  25. Try going to a 49ers or Giants fan site and talk about "Frisco". Anyway, Neil Allen sounds like an asset for the pitching staff, and should be the source of entertaining articles every now and then as well, as the legend of his off-field exploits also continues to grow.
