  1. I felt that Wallner's AAA stint would be long. It's not easy to unlearn what you've been programmed your whole pro career. I'm happy that he's close because we need him. We need Martin, Wallner, Julien, Lee & Kiriloff all up, plus Keirsey deserving a MLB call up. Which demands tough decisions on Farmer, Margot, and Santana even if they aren't as bad as they were. What good is DeSclavani on the 40-man? If any trades involving any of these players or others on the 40-man they should be made.
  2. "Carmargo is pushing his way to the majors". Carmargo didn't even catch unless you mean as a DH. Last night's game was televised. I was disappointed that Carmargo didn't catch, I was hoping to see what his defense was like. Winkel caught & was fine plus his bat was also good. It was very interesting to see Festa pitch. He & Raya both had good games.
  3. We agree Topgun, I'm hoping for some relevance from Thielbar but I'm afraid he's on his way out. Canterino when? Who knows? He was put on the 60-day back at the end of April & started to throw from the mound shortly afterward. The 60-day should be over soon & he'll start his lengthy ramp-up process. You don't hear anything about his progress. Which is frustrating.
  4. I noticed that SWR had a tough time hitting his spots, maybe indeed that was the reason. (?) If SWR's command was just slightly better in the 1st inning, he'd easily have 0 ERs, gone longer in the game & pick up the win. With baseball, it's funny how a slight difference can make such a big difference.
  5. Perfect! The Twins can pick up another slugging reject, that this FO love. School him in the "all or nothing" approach & expect him to hit a ton of HRs while playing a good 1B. But in reality, they create another SO machine.
  6. Hope you forgive me but I'm a little gun-shy. We have been burnt much too often at the deadline as buyers & very little success. As a team, I see us improving & easily making the play-off even if we don't win the division title. We are finally using Alcala correctly, eventually, Stewart will return, hopefully Duran will return to dominance, Thielbar to relevance, Varland & Canterino will make an impact in the BP. Martin & Keirsey need a chance to show what they can really do & Miranda & Kiriloff at 1B. We don't need a back of the order SP to get us to the dance, what we really need is a high-end SP to advance. These deadline SPs are expensive & risky, I'd preferred we had done this last off-season & not done what they had done.
  7. Kepler came through again. Buxton, Polanco & Kepler have been quite the camaraderie that support each other through the years. It'd be hard to see Kepler being able to do what has been doing alone on a different team.
  8. A comeback is great no matter which team you're playing. I saw the 1st inning & went to bed behind 4-0. But fell asleep with a quiet confidence that we'd be on top when I woke up. They didn't disappoint me even w/o Lewis & Martin (they always put on a good show).
  9. I feel a little uneasy w/o Lewis in the line-up. A little too late for me, so I'll miss practically all of the game.
  10. I was with you Trov. Too much money & too many red flags. They got lot less than they asked & deserved much less than that.
  11. I was worried Ted that you were going to promote Varland to stay as a starting pitcher. I've been advocating all season against wasting Varland's bullets in AAA. Even when many criticized Varland for not being good enough down in AAA, Varland proved last season that he's very effective in the BP. Yet I wouldn't be against using him in a BP game or even as a spot SP or in the future stretch him in full-time SP. Varland can be most effectively used in long relief, relieving the pressure on both BP & rotation especially seeing some scary stuff from Pablo & Duran.
  12. The 1st thing I notice about a player is character. SWR interview with Seth, I was impressed with SWR's character after listening to him. Driven to become the best, character that gets a player past any drawbacks. Many fans have been down on Lewis, Martin & SWR during their MiLB stints crying out to trade them. But I haven't lost faith in them because of their character. Many are still are waiting SWR to fall any day. But he's constantly improving his pitches released from that arm slot so it's hard to really get a good read. Along with his command of his pitches, I don't expect any regression anytime soon. Even though he doesn't have that wipeout pitch.
  13. I was told to be excited about this crop of college catchers, Yes the crop is larger but the quality is way down. There is no comparison to '23 top 2 college catchers- 1st Round (LH) Teal & 2nd Round (SH) Cole Carrigg both have the potential to be elite. Carrigg was moved off catcher (which was a shame) to CF due to need in '23. Carrigg has a very good hit tool, super fast especially for a catcher, canon for an arm, starting to develop power as a pro, a leader can be proficient at any premium position including pitching but wants to be a catcher. It'd be a big mistake if CO doesn't develop him as a catcher. But getting back to the '24 class, I'm disappointed. I was never big on Parada because he had no arm & too slow for my taste. Too many link big bat = good catcher. You are right the Twins don't care about defense, they look at 1st big bat. Which is not a bad idea if you are MIL or SEA who can evaluate & develop defensiveness in catchers, What I see MN can't. Which results in shabby catching depth, Overall this strategy also produces a high glut of big bat/ no glove cOF/ 1B/ DH types which is bleeding into 2B.
  14. The Saints really exploded! Wallner did very well but most importantly no SOs! He should be called up soon, along with Lee. Blewett & Balazovik pitched well in the BP game. Twins should try it sometime.
  15. Correa is MVP. Buxton is steadier, Lewis is Lewis & a good start by Martin. Ryan good start, good to see Alcala up & producing especially when Thielbar is flailing. A good game. Twins keep this rolling against these team so when we come against really good teams with Lewis we can sustain it.
  16. LH hitter, Kiriloff had trouble hitting any pitcher (which is very troubling, since what kind of hitter he is, who can normally hit any pitcher) to be replaced by a RH hitter who can hit any pitcher. This should be a nontopic. What should be a concern is a pure hitter like Kiriloff is not able to solve quickly this problem. The problem is then physical, mostly likely due to playing the OF instead of extensively playing 1B due to his arm history. In other words our problem is Santana, a problem this FO is hesitant to solve. They'd rather save face than saving Kiriloff career which the Twins can profit from.
  17. I agree with Brian that too often this FO likes to major in minor details & miss the big picture. Yet it's very unfortunate that our LH hitters Wallner & Julien are having swing problems, Kiriloff (?) and Keirsey is on the IL, not available, But what can we do? Martin isn't too bad against RHPs & he's a spark plug. We are at a soft spot in our schedule. Hopefully, soon any combination of Lee, Keirsey, Kiriloff, Julien & Wallner will become available to where they are forced to make a decision on RH-sided Farmer, Margot & Santana, even though they're hitting better. They convince sports writers that MN big need for the deadline is a corner RH bat.(?)
  18. Kiriloff was healthy to begin the season & his hitting reflected that. Because of his past arm problems, he should have been limited to 1B/ DH, but because of Santana, Kiriloff played mainly OF. The longer he played OF, the worse his hitting got, Kiriloff is a pure hitter so any mechanical problem is minor & quickly resolved. This problem only got worse. IMO his shoulder has been giving him problems so he can't maintain his swing but not serious enough to land on the IL. So should he have been sent down? I say no, but because of Santana, he had to be sent down to rest his arm & get it back in shape. The combination of Kiriloff, Miranda & Julien would have been a far superior choice than Santana.
  19. I do think that they could reevaluate the hitting coaches, but IMO Popovich is doing a good job. IMO the main problem is the team's hitting (all or nothing) philosophy that influences our scouting, draft picks, development, FA signing & maybe to some extent the hitting coach hirings. Firings of coaches (like they did a couple of years ago) won't do any good if they don't change their philosophy priority. That change will produce a massive overall of the system over several years to undo it.
  20. Right now Martin is up & Keirsey is still on the IL. The rest aren't ready yet. Again to voice my grievance on obtaining Santana & Margot, Even though they are producing now, they are taking up valuable playing time & roster spots of in-house players who are superior offensively. To protect him, Kiriloff should be playing extensively 1B because of his past arm problems. Kiriloff started out the season as one of our best hitters. The longer he played OF, the worse his hitting got. Although he's not on the IL, IMO his shoulder isn't what it should be to maintain his hitting, I'd really like to know what Martin & Keirsey have on the MLB level. For that they need a lot of playing time & a roster spot. Kiriloff & Miranda need extensive time at 1B & Martin & Keirsey need extensive time in the OF to properly evaluate whether we need to shop a bat or not. Plus the added salary of Santana & Margot hamstrings us from doing so. Severino has been bit by the same bug as Wallner & Julien, so he's out of the question. When Keirsey, Wallner, Julien & Lee are ready. Farmer, Margot & Santana should be gone.
  21. Catching is the premiere defensive position and Vazquez is one of the top ones, Jeffers is considerably lower. Right now he's out hitting Jeffers, Vazquez was brought in to resurrect our catching staff after the departure of Garver & Rortvedt in '22. Jeffers hasn't proved yet that he can physically & emotionally take on the primary catching duties. IMO during this hitting slump of Jeffers w/o any defensive chops to fall back on he'd flounder much like '21 & especially '22. Vazquez should take the credit for being Jeffers safety net in '23 so he could thrive & be recognized as a viable catcher. Plus his defense, it's great how he handles the pitchers & INFers. The fact that he's been healthy (which is unusual for a Twin & catcher) we have been very fortunate. Because Jeffers left alone with our shabby depth for a prolonged amount of time would be disastrous. While Carmargo is a pretty good AAA hitter (We have no idea how Carmargo will handle MLB pitching) & has a good arm, the Twins have failed to develop him enough defensively. So any idea of DFAing or trading Vazquez is ridiculous along with throwing the rest of '24 &'25 salary money away. We are stuck with Vazquez so why don't you try cheering for him instead of putting him down,
  22. Since Santana is a fixture at 1B, forcing Kiriloff at OF. Kiriloff is due for a breather from the OF at AAA. Once his shoulder is rested, he'll be back but maybe not since Santana is at 1B. Happy that the OB spark plug (Martin) is back up, should have a lot of time at 2B. 2nd time is the charm. I'm not looking at how many HRs that Wallner & Julien are hitting in AAA, I'm looking at the SOs & the hits outside half of the plate.
  23. PIT is still in the hunt for the wildcard. If they are selling, Twins shouldn't want anything they'll come to offer.
