Great summary, Hans! Great battery of pitch selection! OAK were looking for sweepers & change-ups & got mainly FBs plus mixing in pitches very well. The Buck Truck arrived with needed deliveries of runs! With great pitching efforts from Ober & Lopez. the pressure is on Ryan to do the same against AZ.

Jorge Alcala is Fighting the Battle to Win the War
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I consider Alcala as a setup man. I'm in favor of keeping our high-leverage RPs fresh especially Alcala who is coming off an arm injury. To ensure this we need long relief.- 7 replies

We can disagree about the definition of pull-happy, I compared him to Buxton, who also goes the other way sometimes but IMO tries to pull the ball too often. Nor did mentioned that his sole problem is because he likes to pull the ball, although that contributes. Your statement of his problem matches pretty much what I wrote earlier in my text.

Delusions of Grandeur
Doctor Gast commented on Fire Dan Gladden's blog entry in Blog Fire Dan Gladden
We have practically the same roster except Gray, who won the division & advanced in the postseason. We had great new players coming up in SWR, Varland, Paddack, Martin, healthy Buxton, Polanco, Miranda & Kiriloff to help strengthen our weak areas. The FO could have picked up a postseason-caliber SP to fill that gap if they wanted to use players & prospects that were expendable but chose not to. We weren't even close to landing FAs Gray, Snell or Montgomery.Im They instead chose to add DeSclavani, Topa, Margot & Santana. to replace SWR, Varland, Martin, Keirsey, Miranda, Julien, Kiriloff & Lee. IMO we have a great team now that Lewis is back, We need to do some fine-tuning & synchronize the hitting, defense & pitching to all fire at the same time. We could still probably need a postseason SP. -
Jax could have been stretched out this off-season when SP depth was in doubt & Varland proved to be a great BP piece with doubts of being a viable SP. Yet it's hard to really know how good Jax could be as a SP. The only way is to give him a shot, Some were able to make the transition back to the rotation with some success while others like A.J. Puk have not. Next season all those numerous prospects that you mentioned will be closer to cementing their position as a MLB SP. Which will diminish the need for Jax to be so. Jax has been the one true solid high-leverage RP so far & it'll be hard to move him off there. Like you said "if it's not broken, don't fix it" seems to ring true.

I'm far from being sold on Sabato. I wouldn't have been disappointed if he was taken in the rule 5 draft. For being a bat 1st/ no glove 1st round draftee, the bar for offense production has to be very high. Sabato hasn't come close to meeting that bar. His low contact & high SO rate history has been depressing even though he has improved them a little, I can see the pull-happy Sabato having problems in the MLB much like Buxton now but worse. Sabato has seen some success at his level in the MiLB but he really has to turn it up to ever make the MLB.

Twins Minor League Report (6/22): Six Wins on Saturday
Doctor Gast replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Bousley got the job done with only 3hits & 0HRs. Hot/ cold Balazovik had an impressive 1 inning. Good to see Keirsey back & starting where he left off. Good to see any good results from Soto in his early career. Jenkins HR swing was very smooth.- 13 replies

Congratulations to Ober for the nice complete game! Great games for Margot & Miranda! Good luck to Castro to get his 20 games in at CF, LF, SS & 3B (he'll probably get in 20 games at 2B also)

They have managed Paddack wrong. When he was doing well at the beginning of the season, the attitude was let's see how far he can go. It should have been he's just came off 2nd TJ, we need to manage his innings. I've advocated at the beginning of the season to keep Varland in long relief & don't waste his bullets in AAA. Keep the short relief & the rotation well-rested. The rotation & BP have kept us in games at the beginning of the season but now look fatigued. Bring Varland up now! Maybe Paddack & others will bounce back. Our offense looks better

Vazquez has been constantly playing very good defense, it only makes sense for him to catch at least 50% of the time. And especially so when he's out-hitting Jeffers. As I said before Vazquez is Jeffers safety net. With the extra emotional & physical stress w/o Vazquez, Jeffers would be going into a tailspin that'll more than likely ends up in injury. I like Jeffers & hope he gets out of his slump soon. But don't underrate Vazquez.

Dobnak was unimpressive but got the job done. IMO it was because of the defense. Good to see Julien at 1B. Why wasn't Lee at 2B? Don't the Saints have anyone decent to play at SS besides Lee? They better find one. We all know that Wallner can hit HRs at AAA but what I'm looking at is can he keep from striking out there? Evidently not, he struck out 3Xs. Zebbie is hot should arrive at AAA soon.

Move Siemen off SS to 2B he instantly became a GG. Lee is a good SS move him to 2B, no difference. Like Siemen, he has the talent & athleticism, he just has to learn the ropes.

From the beginning, I saw Lee as a fixture in the Twins' INF. He has a glove that screams GG at 2B. The way that he's swinging the bat makes me very excited. Lee, Lewis & Martin have a great hitting approach & have a lot of positive energy that they can feed off each other & is very catchy. One word that sometimes defines the Twins is flat. Hopefully, that can change.

Don't believe everything you read. A lot of Julien's defensive stats are smoke & mirrors. The stats that show Julien is better at 2B than he is, also shows Correa & Santana as worse. A fact that you can't argue with is that Julien is the 2nd slowest starter on the roster, only Santana is slower. Do you want your 2nd slowest player to cover up the middle? I don't. Arraez had no experience at 1B & no grace period. He was thrown in the fire right away & did fine (1B is Arraez's best position). If Julien doesn't have the glove to play 1B he shouldn't be playing anywhere. Julien's bat should play much better against RHPs than Santana. 1B is a production position, Julien has a much better chance to beat Santana & Miranda's bat at 1B against RHPs than beat Lee, Martin & Castro at 2B. What is confusing to me is that Julien best position is 1B & there is where his future is at. Yet all these years they choose to prop Julien up at 2B & avoid him from playing at 1B. I'm a big fan of Julien but if they think that Julien can't play 1B, then they should trade him.

Guerrero is all hype. The hype has him as MVP & GG, he never has come close earn that & every year he's going further downhill. Most of these guys are big bucks. So you're dreaming if you think we'd land one of these.

There are some who are concerned that Lee doesn't mash LHPs & that playing around 75% of the time at 2B isn't enough. But since Lee's return to AAA he's been mashing LHPs. I'm all for holding back Lee at AAA as long as possible but we need him at 2B now. Since he'll be needed at 2B, someone needs to tell the FO that he'll need time at 2B to get ready & Julien finally at 1B.

IMO TB are better sellers than buyers. They were in a buyer mode when they bought Cruz. They'd be in a seller's mode when selling Cleavinger. I like both Tanner Scott & A. J. Puk (MIA). Tanner Scott will get a lot of attention & his price will probably be higher than we'd like. but Puk is from Mpls. could be had at a reasonable price. Puk tried his luck at SP this season with mixed reviews mainly poor, Sent back to the BP, he remains a very solid RP. I also like the fact that being from a different league, many from our league will not know him well. Last season Okert had a very good season with MIA, then he fell apart towards the end of the season, the reason why MIA was happy to trade him. So I'd not trust him fully to be reliable towards the end of our season.

That is one of my points. Another is 1B is a production position, we can get more production from these 3 than Santana alone, 3rd is Miranda, Julien & Kiriloff is our future, why give a great majority of time to someone who will be gone next year, with doubts that he will be producing come postseason? This time of experience should be given to the ones who will benefit the team the most in the long run.
