Royce Lewis, Injuries, and Stupid Luck
Doctor Gast replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Muscle weakness is a common characteristic following ACL reconstruction, yet there is a surprising lack of research looking into the presence and persistence of weakness in muscle groups other than the quadriceps. However, there is evidence that muscle activation patterns (specifically the co-activation of the gluteal and adductor muscles) are impaired for up to two years following surgery. Thank you Lucas for this very interesting article. That confirms my assumptions. I somewhat expected some soft tissue problems with Lewis as I did with Buxton, Polanco, & Kiriloff after a prolonged stint on the IL due to knee, wrist & shoulder problems. My approach is to be very proactive, Because competitive players like Lewis & Kiriloff aren't going to tell you that they are hurting, especially Kiriloff because his job is on the line. Pure hitters like Kiriloff & Mr. I don't do slumps Lewis, in most cases when they slump it's because they are hurting & it affects their swing. In Lewis & Kiriloff's cases it should set off red flags, where Lewis & Kiriloff should have been set aside & told, "You are sitting, where does it hurt? Let's resolve this". IMO Paparesta is doing a great job. Now management needs to step up & do a better job. IMO Baldelli is better than most but I'm suggesting to go further out of the box thinking of playing hurt until you drop. -
Like Lewis, there was no doubt in my mind that Lee would arrive at MLB like he belonged there. I'm disappointed that I missed it. I thought we had chance against Montero with Festa but only the bottom of the order did any damage against him. DET struck an artery, Stamant & Thielbar came in & stopped the bleeding but the game could not be saved. Encouraging points: #1 Lee #2 Vazquez put a nice swing on that HR, maybe after a decent June, he can add to it in July. #3 Thielbar had another scoreless inning, Like I said I didn't watch the game so I can't say how impressive he was or make a comment on Festa, nevertheless it was a learning experience. IMO Festa had started with a few good innings, bring up Varland to piggyback, to take up the slack. CLE lost to CWS so Go Twins!

Twins Receiving Calls On Outfielder Matt Wallner
Doctor Gast replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
"It can be argued that the Twins don't need Wallner next season, they need him today. While the Twins have done an excellent job of mashing left-handed pitching (.799 OPS, 2nd in MLB), they're merely adequate against right-handed pitching (.720 OPS, 10th in MLB). Wallner's left-handed power stature could play well in the Twins lineup in the second half of the season." We need Wallner today & in the future. He's a pretty good hitter & has straightened out what they asked. He still has a lot of potential to improve in the OF, We need him to compete for Kepler's spot next season. Right now we have a shortage of LH hitters in the MLB and an abundance of RH hitters, trade Margot, We may need a LHRP or a high-end SP, and so is every competing team, So the only teams that'll trade such players are teams that aren't competing & they'll want prospects. I'm afraid of underselling Wallner for somebody we don't need again & block the playing time of a more deserving in-house young player again. Just to trade for trade's sake & say we did something (Whoopy-ding). -

I'm a big fan of Teel & we need a future catcher but this FO doesn't seem to share our priority & doubt BOS would trade a future elite catcher. -
Twins Promote Top Prospect Brooks Lee!
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Excited for a long over-due call-up for Brooks Lee. We are desperate for more hitters on the left side. Would have loved to see Lewis together with Lee. My heart's heavy for Lewis wish this wouldn't the reason for Lee's call-up. A miraculous healing for Lewis. Pray for good fortune to both of these guys & long, healthy & successful careers. -
Dobby's ERA was terrible in the beginning of the season. But lately, it has been very good (no stats)

Morris didn't fail us. Dobnak wasn't flashy but he's tough. What is Dobnak GB%? If it's pretty high, could some team be interested? Lee, Wallner & Keirsey are ready to be called up. Lee call up Falvey & tell him you're ready.

This is Why Byron Buxton is Worth His Contract
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Where have you been, Falvey? I can say the same about your hype you spin. -
Correa was never in the Twins' sights. They liked Story's bat & he was playing other teams, & it looked like BOS was about to sign Story. When it looked like the Twins struck out again, Correa dropped from the sky & Boras placed him in the Twins' lap. IMO because of the steep & long contract he was asking for & many teams were leery about his "garbage can scandal" so he couldn't sign with other teams, the Twins overlooked this. Maybe because they were desperate. IMO Minnesota wasn't on Correa's target list either but when they came together it was a perfect match. The other SSs IMO never really considered MN (MN had a terrible '21 record, plus big FAs usually don't want to come here) as a possibility w/o an over-pay. Not only did the Twins get lucky in '22 but also in '23 when Correa's offseason was even messier. Not only does Correa like it here, he adds leadership, mentorship, a feel for the game, valuable postseason experience, and club-house presence to go along with his on-field abilities. He's a key to the success of the Twins. So yes the Twins came out on top by coming up with Correa instead of the others.

SWR pitched 4 scoreless innings & battled hard for 1 2/3, great job, especially for a rookie. The offense kept the pressure on Skubal. Buxton & Lewis gave it all that they had. Margot & Farmer had good games. A good appreciated win.

I'm with you Patzky. Polanco played continuously played hurt, Ryan, Kiriloff, Lewis are competitors, they play hurt & their production dips. When they continue to play hurt, it usually ends up to something worse because they're aggravating the injury & they are forcing themselves more to try to compensate. You can't depend on these guys to tell you they can't play because they are hurt. So management needs to be more proactive. When Polanco or Kiriloff hitting suffers over a short time you know they are hurting & most everybody suspects that because they are pure hitters & you know that it most likely isn't mechanical. This type of player should be approached saying "you're sitting, where are you hurting & let's resolve this as soon as possible." Lewis (Mr. I don't do slumps), IMO Lewis could have been hurt during his long slump that affected his swing. Determined to overcome this issue he forced himself even more & that extra burst magnified his initial injury. Now with Kepler's injury I felt that they should have rested more & open up an opportunity for Lee to get his foot in the door. At the same time IMO other players could use a rest & Lee could be used to give them a break. During that time Correa got hit by a pitch & Lewis was in his slump. Lee could have been used until the future games.

Why waste money & prospects while we have great young players begging for playing time in the OF & INF. The only questionable need we have surrounds Thielbar's continued effectiveness. I have my doubts. Okert has been our best offseason trade (which isn't saying much) he has had his successes but I wouldn't trust him in the final stretch nor Funderburg in high-leverage situations. Tanner Scott would be our best LHRP option but everybody will be after him. My alternative is A.J. Pukk, a LH version of Varland who isn't quite ready to be a SP but has the stuff to play out well in the BP. Mentioning Varland we need him up in the BP. We have the rotation to take us to the dance but no success. I have my own idea of who could help. It's funny that you mentioned Ben Rortvedt, Ted? and why you think that'd be comical to get him back. I've advocating getting him back since he left, (LHH) Rortvedt, Gerrit Cole's personal catcher at NYY, who's known for his defense. Never known for his power but since leaving "all or nothing" MN & NYY has found success in hitting at TB. Maybe you thought that this FO would never do it or TB wouldn't be stupid enough to do it. I've made several trade offers for Rortvedt through the years at BBTV. The one I made while he was with TB, I got a comment from a TB fan saying "they wouldn't trade him." If we had Rortvedt I'd be open to DFA Vazquez & eat the money.

1st of all I'm not questioning your baseball IQ. I'm just setting the record straight on you trying to negate the points (that you didn't like) when I used unbias & qualified sources, I couldn't see if Martin moved 3ft or more but I can tell you that he didn't have time to set himself up in front of the ball where he could field that ball squarely so he'd have to back-hand the ball. You can believe that Martin made the error, or Cole was a monster while in PIT (while he had the potential to be, but that wasn't the point I was making) I don't care & I won't make a point to refute it. But don't set yourself higher than unbias more qualified personnel just to refute my point that you don't like,
-
Ray Searage was PIT's head pitching coach from '10 to the end of the '19 season. I believe that encompasses both Gerrit Cole & Tyler Glasnow's time in PIT. Both of them criticized Searage's coaching practices & how it affected their performance there, Which makes it absolutely relevant pertaining to that past thread. & setting the record straight.

#1) Let's put this into perspective. Let's break Santana's wrist & recently recovered but not 100% put him into LF, Let's see how his swing & health holds up? Larnach has a turf toe, a "temporarily more vulnerable hitter" so he's temporarily only DHing. #2) "And yet as Cole adhered to the organization’s pitching philosophy, prioritizing efficiency and soft contact, the results were only good, not great. “Not the monster we know today,” said Ron Wolforth, founder of Texas Baseball Ranch. Cole struck out less than a batter per inning for the Pirates." #3) Well-trained umpire did not give Martin an error but you said he did. Not everything you don't agree with is false, What is your qualifications in these matters? Are you more qualified than a well trained umpire in a clear cut decision. Or more qualified than the founder of Texas Baseball Ranch? Cole's striking out less than a batter per inning doesn't make him a monster. Just because you want or are led to believe something is so, doesn't make it so.

This is Why Byron Buxton is Worth His Contract
Doctor Gast replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was under the impression that FO didn't want to extend Buck & Buck didn't want to sign. But Buck wanted to sign as did most of the fanbase. & Buck signed a no-brainer owner-beneficial performance-based contract. With GG bar CF as his base, I completely disagree with the way they managed Buck in '22. #1 kept him out of CF #2 kept playing him hurt at DH trying to artificially extend his AB & having bad results. IMO if he can't play CF don't play him, if he's hurt don't keep aggravating the injury by playing him. shut him down & fix him so he can give some quality production down the road. '22 wasn't great, '23 was recovering from '22. But '24 he has made up for it. '24 his biggest problems haven't been physical it was emotional (placing a lot of pressure on himself to produce), mechanical (trying to pull everything) & mental (trying to apply all the analytics to his swing). When he simplified everything he started to rake. Many have been pessimistic about Buck playing time, I'm not. I expect good things from Buck this 2nd half & years to come. -
Carr didn't do all that much but he got outs. That counts for something. I saw the FM high score & went to check to see how Jenkin did. He didn't play 😑.

Ryan is a very good SP. He's dominant against KC & losing teams. I also wouldn't give too much credence on his performance against SEA whose hitters lead the leagues in SOs. And he gets intimidated by dominating teams. Pablo will go through his yearly readjustment & come out on top. We have a rotation that takes us to the dance. We'll be facing dominating teams in the playoffs, Will Ryan rise to the occasion? IMO he will one day but I'm not convinced he is now.

That's right keep Santana, trade Miranda. Answering the text below Keep Santana at 1B no matter what to massage the FO's ego, keep Kiriloff hurt in the OF, keep Julien at 2B when we are a better team with Lee there. Next year we'll look at 1B & say we have no one at 1B with experience & unnecessarily pay for an expensive mediocre defensive 1B FA. We lose Kiriloff for nothing & still wonder what to do with Julien. Miranda will get plenty of time at 1B with another team & become an all-star. This is a realistic scenario I see. Should we trade Santana? I say yes, definitely before trading Miranda. Will we? probably not. That's why CLE is still 6 games ahead of us after MN battling to stay afloat with a treasure chest of untapped MLB-ready young players begging for time to shine.

Here we have 2 types of hitters represented in the system. Miranda, Kiriloff & Lee are pure hitters if they aren't hitting, it's because there is something physically wrong & need to correct the physical problem. Then we have the "all or nothing" big bats. Larnach, Wallner & Julien. The league has the book on the holes in their swing & they have to relearn their mechanics. I doubted Larnach but he proved me wrong this offseason by adjusting, which gives me hope that Wallner & Julien can too. My concern is that they may at times fall back in their old ways. I am very excited about our young hitters like (LHH) Kiriloff, Larnach, Wallner, Julien, & Keirsey (SHH) Lee, Castro & Severino (RHH) Miranda & Martin who can hit RHPs besides LHPs. All of them deserve playing time in MLB. I was very disappointed that FO picked up inferior veterans to block our young players from valuable playing time and forced our temporarily more vulnerable hitter Kiriloff into a more physically demanding position to jeopardize his swing & health.

Week in Review: Winning Out West
Doctor Gast replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Successful road trip behind us so I won't say anything more except that it was great to see the Buck Truck rolling. It was hard to see Lewis humbled but with Lewis, He'll work it out for good. I'm concerned with Theilbar, it seems that the league is on his trademark curveball. & he's trying to make something else work. It seems like we might be looking for a high-leverage LHRP, I wouldn't trust Okert or Funderburg yet. Varland will make our BP so much better, it's a pity he's still down in AAA. We should have a much easier time with DET but HOU is returning strong. How nice it'd be if HOU & NYY were switched (NYY are falling 😀).- 47 replies

I'd like you to know Doc that I think highly of you. You like to write all-inclusive statements & I whole heartly agree with at least 90% of what you write but sometimes you throw something at the end that I strongly disagree with & I find it hard to give you a thumbs up. I'd like to give you many more thumbs up than I do to let you know that I respect everything that you say. Even though we don't agree 100%

SEA & MN hitters were SO leaders in '23, MN broke the record, SEA leads in SOs this year (877), 30th in BA & 12th in HRs. MN have changed, they are now 20th in SOs (672) & 5th in HRs. So you see SOs aren't required to hit HRs.
