Poor nite for the system. CR snuck one out & DSL. I honestly thought that Boushley would get the nod. Boushley & Keirsey had a good game against a tough Iowa team.

I think Miranda needs some attention, he could be added to the MVP honorable mentions or the most improved. LVP award doesn't exist, it's an award you created to keep the social media's Vazquez negative hype train rolling. Most of the players that were acquired who had poor starts were limited to a LHSPs-only diet. Vazquez & Martin have been on an LHSP-banned diet especially since Jeffers had been in a slump. The last LHSP, Vazquez started but it lasted only 1 AB before Twins knocked him out. So stats can be deceiving. All hitters who were demoted were best positioned as RF/ 1B/ DH which demands the players to really mash the ball. I grant you that Vazquez is a poor hitter & give you credit for mentioning that Vazquez is one of the best defensive catchers. But IMO saying that Vazquez is one of the best defensive catchers (at a key position) & listing him as the LVP is an oxymoron. It's almost as bad as listing one of the best SPs as the LVP, because he can't hit. I know I'll get a lot of thumbs-downs (boos) by social-media hype lovers but I don't care.

This was a tough pitching battle and Ober pitched a good game. Twins hit the ball hard & didn't fall in & SEA had some weak balls that fell in. Unlike many think, defense is important. It was concerning to begin the game with Margot in CF & Miranda at 3B. Not that Miranda is a bad 3Bman but to better our odds I preferred Lewis playing there if Correa or Buxton are not playing. Every play at catcher is a tough play, most of the time Vazquez makes superb plays & nothing is said but if he misses a play he's railed upon. Vazquez is not Superman but he's a better catcher than most. Defense is important, that's why Vazquez should play more not less. If I had my way we wouldn't need Vazquez but the way things stand we do. So you'll never see me complaining about Vazquez. Because the alternative would be much worse.

I was thinking the same thing. But IMO Boras doesn't work that way. I'm not much to extend a player so early into his career, especially having Boras as an agent. But I'll take an exception with Lewis. Lewis is the type of player you want to have as a lifer. Having his attitude, joy & talents that greatly affects the whole team. His 1st ACL was a freak accident of a sunny Southern Cal young man's confrontation with ice. 2nd is the bad judgment of putting him in CF, Keep him in the INF we'll be fine. Soft tissue especially shortly after return will happen. Going forward I don't see there'll be a real issue. But his past, is a bargaining chip that can be used & he loves to play here. we can use in our favor. The longer we wait more costly it'll become. It could become now or never. I'm a believer, make it a priority, and extend him now.

What we really need is a LHRP. (MIA) Tanner Scott will be well-procured but A.J. Pukk has been very solid in the BP. He'd be cheap to pick up. One SP that has intrigued me lately is (CIN) Montas. I looked at Montas having the same path as Sonny Gray. Being the ace of OAK, going to NYY & having problems there, having injury problems & going to CIN to get some of those problems worked out. His injury problems are behind him, he's in his last year and wouldn't cost us anything. A prospect can be added to have CIN pay down his salary. Like Gray, MN could work wonders on his potential talents.

Love your post & I agree with you Brian 100%. I have written about it. If you have holes that you don't have reliable young in-house players to fill those holes then yes get a good veteran. But if you have quality young in-house positional depth superior to any veteran you may get on a limited budget. You go with your superior in-house players like CLE has done. CLE was highly criticized for basically standing pat. Because reporters prefer you making bad moves (then laude you) than have nothing for them to report about. If you made a few bad moves you had a good offseason if did nothing like CLE you had a terrible offseason. If you have faith in your good young players & give them playing time, they'll get better & add value to your team. If you pick up some inferior veterans, they come & go & add nothing to your team. Like you said just playing young players doesn't guarantee a good team going forward. CO is playing some young players & they pay their players well but they don't have a very good team it's because they don't have very good player evaluation & development. That has to go hand in hand.

I'd like to add a quote from George Brett & a site to listen to an interview with him if anyone is interested. George Brett on “launch angle” philosophy: “I get in arguments all the time with hitting coaches and players today . . . My bat [was] coming through the zone on the same plane as the ball. That’s why I didn’t strike out. Nowadays players strike out all the time, because their bat is in and out of the zone, on the same plane as the ball, for a short period of time. I will go to my grave vowing that my theory is better than they’re teaching now.” 3,154 hits. George Brett knows what he is talking about. Hope you enjoy the full podcast. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the Here George Brett blames "launch angles" but IMO it goes beyond that, which creates holes in a person's swing. There's more I can say about that but I'll end with what Buck said recently about having his brain full of things to try to do that he loses the feel of the AB (my paraphrase). I stated a little while ago about how bad PIT pitch coaching was & how pitchers blossomed after leaving there, Gerrit Cole was one example. I got a rebuttal that Gerrit Cole was always a monster. Here is a statement contrary. "And yet as Cole adhered to the organization’s pitching philosophy, prioritizing efficiency and soft contact, the results were only good, not great. “Not the monster we know today,” said Ron Wolforth, founder of Texas Baseball Ranch. Cole struck out less than a batter per inning for the Pirates."

Twins Prospect Retrospective: David Festa

Decent line-up, they should do well. Lately with Farmer, Margot & Santana fixed against LHPs, (RH) Martin & Vazquez rarely if ever hit against LHPs. -

Wish Festa well today! I'll be watching & cheering. Hope Baldelli doesn't put together his getaway roster which handicaps the team. -
'19 Twins broke the record for the most HRs in the season because of the "juiced ball". Ever since MN has made it their goal to hit HRs. Forget about small ball- defense, hitting the other way, hit & run, bunting, hitting to contact, stealing & taking an extra base etc. Everything was focused on squeezing extra HRs out of everybody. Thus the "all or nothing" philosophy was born. After the "juiced ball" went away the next year, many of those HRs turned into FOs. The SPs started to find clinks in the armor & SOs started to pile up. Last season the FO falsely credited the "all or nothing" approach for the teams' success. That gave them the green light to double down & to h*** with the SOs. This season the SOs piled up but the HRs didn't, the league had the book out on them & every team that followed the same creed. HRs were down across the league so it was no wonder that CLE ranked high in slugging because they at least made contact. CLE has always put value on pitching, small ball, player's evaluation & development & giving their young players a chance to play. IMO the smaller teams that want to compete will have to evolve away from the "all or nothing" approach to be more like CLE. I hope it's not too late for us.

I am 100% behind how the Twins develop their pitchers. IMO they are tired of getting pitchers like Canterino & Prielipp shot even before they start pitching in the organization. To achieve a top pitching prospect they need to start from the ground up & manage correctly their young arms to maximize their health & outcomes. Raya is slight and has shown signs of future injuries. Therefore the limiting of his pitches yet still advancing him through the system. Twins are slowly increasing his innings, Raya has some problems with control so I wouldn't recommend increasing his pitch count either until he rectifies this. When the time for him to be added to the 40-man due to either need or time & still hasn't reached the adequate pitch count of a SP then bring him up by all means as an opener or RP. I would not abandon the plan. Raya is too valuable. They are following the same plan with Soto, He'll get more innings because he's bigger & stronger than Raya. But the idea of managing his young arm is the same.
-
I like Castro from the beginning, but knowing the Twins I doubted he make the team & flounder at AAA. Fortunate for injuries (strange to hear that) it gave him the opportunity to prove himself & shine. He has been valuable for the Twins with his flexibility, glove & bat and IMO he is still not done rising. The offense shone led by clutch hitting by Miranda & Castro. SWR gave us the chance for our offense to win the game. Great throw out by Vazquez to squelch a AZ rally.
-
Never in my mind had I doubted Miranda's bat. He's a pure hitter that can hit anybody, There will come a day when his time at 3B will be limited. Can he become our full-time 1Bman? IMO yes. Great observation on SWR, JM. The difference between this game & the game before is the prior game the Snakes struck 1st. SWR held them early & gave our offense the chance to have the advantage,
-
I think there is still some MN fans who are waiting for SWR wheels to fall off, based on last season stats. But SWR is one step ahead of the league who are trying to figure him out. With his new arm slot, he is constantly working on his pitches thrown from that angle & improving. His attitude is what has impressed me the most about Simmy. His constant desire to compete & improve. Also his teamwork mentality that appreciates what everybody is doing behind him but takes full responsibility for his actions. Gil is a great pitcher but IMO SWR has the greatest opportunity to stay up pitching in the MLB than Gil. Good fortune to SWR. The greatest thing that happened for the Twins was DeSclavani going down rather than limping around the mound blocking the way of our prospects. That way we know early that Varland is better suited for the BP than starting (at least at this point), we discovered that SWR is a pretty darn good SP and Festa is given a chance to show what he has. All are very positive outcomes (but it'd have been better not to spend the cost of obtaining Desclavani)
