The Twins have a larger than normal allotment for bonuses. I know most players are pretty firm with specific teams, but maybe this is a good year to go above slot to "steal" away a top guy; a switch hitting athletic catcher perhaps (Salas).

Caleb Thielbar's Secret Weapon (Free Preview)
tony&rodney replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thielbar is a fun pitcher to watch with his slow curve and surprising fastball. Hopefully he can keep going for several more years and cash in on his hard work. -
BTV is interesting for fans. I wonder how it compares to the evaluations of a team. The oft-stated match between the Twins and Marlins or the Twins and Padres may be a myth if Miami and San Diego have zero interest in any of the players on the Twins roster or vice versa. We have seen the value of Martin, Kepler, Kirilloff, and Larnach totally crash on BTV in less than one year. Thus, I'm not sure there is any value whatsoever in these players until they show their skills and health are still relevant. It seems like Miami could use a talent like Trevor Larnach or Max Kepler and the Twins could benefit from a player like Edward Cabrera. San Diego seems like a match as well. However, there has not been anything tangible yet to emerge regarding the players from this post and I'm left feeling like these guys might still be Twins in June.

Rumor: A Potential Trade for Rafael Devers
tony&rodney replied to Richard's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Devers was the post and there isn't really any reason to trade for a poor defensive player with a huge bat approaching free agency when the team is not that one single piece away from Houston, much less New York or Cleveland. The talk about Burnes is about 99.9% unlikely but the person who suggested Arraez and Ryan plus maybe a low A flyer is near correct. That is a deal worth something, but only if the Twins decide, against all prior practice, to extend Corbin with a contract of his size; Burnes is a big man. So it goes with trade talk. Maybe the Twins are in purgatory from the perspective of other teams because it is really impossible to tell what the Twins can acquire a player off of their 40 person roster.- 52 replies

Another interesting set of young players carrying varying degrees of potential. Wonderful stuff. Larnach and Jeffers have both had some success and faced challenges at the MLB level. Each should get an opportunity to showcase their talents soon. I'm not real keen on either as parts of an excellent team but hope they can turn their opportunity into regular jobs, even if it is with another team. Connor Prielipp is a real throw of the dice. His background as a young prospect is chock full of glamor. This coming season the Twins will let Prielipp step forward and show how his talent and skills are matched up with professional batters. I am as excited for Connor to get his chances as I am to see what transcends with Dylan Lesko, the Padres young pick. Doesn't it seem like Austin Martin would become a regular in an MLB lineup real soon if he was just left alone to use his line drive swing and athleticism as he sees fit to become a very comfortable player? When I watched Simeon Woods Richardson pitch and when I listened to an interview he did with Seth, I was reminded of Brad Radke. The comparison was not because of physical similarity or personality so much as in the demeanor and confidence with which young Simeon approaches his craft and how he seemingly keeps a healthy perspective on his profession and how it is progressing. If you have the command and control of a few pitches and possess superior intestinal fortitude, you can still be extremely successful as an MLB starting pitcher. A guy named Bieber demonstrates this best. I'm thinking there is a real chance for SWR; I'm rooting for him. The new year feels a little more hopeful with the start of these write-ups - thanks for another one Nick.

Rumor: Padres Open to Dealing Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim
tony&rodney replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
A concern of mine regarding any potential trades is whether other teams see any value to gain in return from our 40 person roster. -
Excellent start to your assessment of the 2023 Twins player assets Nick. Looking forward to the rest of the posts. I think you are right on with Wallner as a wild card to adjust. Varland looked quite comfortable on a MLB pitching mound in his brief trial. Gray has been a really good pitcher and projects to be the best Twins starting pitcher if he is still on the team in April. Lopez could go just about any direction but I think he could rebound with a vengeance. Finally, Kirilloff is rightfully lower on the list due to his injuries but it is entirely possible that a fully healed wrist unleashes those St. Paul numbers on MLB pitchers. "For one thing, it feels like we're in the midst of a slow-developing offseason journey with big twists still ahead. I have a strong feeling there will be noticeable changes to this list by March 30th." This line from the post most exemplifies the current state of the Minnesota Twins; things are in flux.

Rumor: Padres Open to Dealing Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim
tony&rodney replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think you may be actually be correct but if San Diego was open to this trade and Falvey could not complete such an opportunity, I guess we then would know the direction of the front office which would not be good news. -
Rumor: Padres Open to Dealing Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim

Mahle - straight up. -
I am willing for the Twins to gamble on trading Arraez, Larnach or Kepler for Edward Cabrera. I would like to see an expanded trade even to add either Meyer or Luzardo to the deal. The Twins have corner players and even some others like Noah Miller in A ball to offer. I'm also willing to trade Gray to San Diego for Dylan Lesko. Give the kids a shot because the Twins have a chance if the younger players develop and play.

Will the Real Trevor Larnach Please Stand Up
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gallo gets a spot. Gordon deserves to play more than any of the other younger guys (Larnach, Kirilloff, Martin, Wallner). Kirilloff and Larnach need to play every day in order to develop their expected reasonably high ceilings. Garlick is a reserve, which most can agree on. Celestino has disappointed with his bat but remains the best CF behind Byron. Arraez won the AL batting title last year. Kepler will play if he is on the team. So, it looks like currently there are four of five spots in the lineup securely spoken for: Buxton, Arraez, Gallo, and Kepler. This leaves one spot for Gordon, Larnach, Kirilloff, Garlick, Celestino, and Martin. Even if the last three are removed, that is too many. Last season saw a mountain of injuries. In the current setup, do we expect to start Larnach, Kepler, Celestino, and Martin in St. Paul? Nick Gordon displayed last season that he was the top outfielder on the team. The Twins put forth a team in 2022 that lacked athleticism and Gordon was an exception. It would be a real step backwards if Gordon was returned to his former role as a roving utility player who had to wait for at bats because of injuries to another player. Thus, the Twins will need to decide what players they see as most beneficial to their franchise moving forward and complete a few trades to reduce the others. Falvey gets to decide who goes.- 25 replies

Will the Real Trevor Larnach Please Stand Up
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Larnach, like Kirilloff, Gordon, and others, needs at bats. Trevor has some fairly decent all around skills. The problem will be if he can get 20 plate appearances per week. The Twins added Joey Gallo to an already crowded corner outfield, which means that consistent opportunities will be tough to come by unless there is a return of last seasons thick roll of injuries. Personally, I believe the Twins should trade a couple or three players and stand with who they roster. If Trevor Larnach is on the roster in April, he should get 20 plus plate appearances a week. Baseball is a tough game and players produce far better when the management shows a belief in their skills.- 25 replies

5 Reasons the Minnesota Twins Will Win in 2023
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The optimism is important and I also find myself wishing for the Twins to have better health, a drastic improvement from their young players, a switch in close game results, and significantly improved pitching. The things beyond control is how Detroit and Kansas City improve, whether Chicago plays to their talent, and how anyone can stop Cleveland from winning the division by 10 games again. I think the division will be stronger and thus the Twins will need leaps in improvement from their pitchers, core players, and youth as well as near perfect health to be relevant in 2023. I hope this can happen.- 51 replies

What Is Max Kepler’s Trade Value?

What Is Max Kepler’s Trade Value?
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with this. There has been posts and discussion concerning potential trades. Arraez should have some value clearly, but nothing has emerged thus far. The one player that most everyone feels could be in AAA, Gilberto Celestino, may still be needed to cover for Buxton. The situation is complicated, for sure.- 64 replies

What Is Max Kepler’s Trade Value?
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins have very little leverage. Nine rostered outfielders are a pile and sending Wallner, Garlick, and Celestino down still leaves two extras. Gallo and Buxton will be in the lineup unless rested. Gordon is our best outfielder. I guess you could plug Kirilloff into first base, where I prefer him, but what happens to Arraez in that move? What happens to Larnach and Kepler? Do people think Polanco will be traded and Gordon put at second base? Does Larnach get moved? The Twins have LH bats that play in the corner OF and every team sees that. It would be pretty different to carry nine OF on the 40 person roster, but Falvey believes in process above results. We shall see.- 64 replies

What Is Max Kepler’s Trade Value?
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Could Max return Oswaldo Cabrera from the Yankees? Does Miami have any interest in Kepler? When the Twins signed Gallo, they also likely reduced the asking price for Kepler. Kepler, Buxton, Gallo, Larnach, Kirilloff, Wallner, Gordon, Garlick, and Celestino make nine outfielders for thirteen roster positions. The Twins have been giving playing time to players with the highest paying contracts, which means an outfield of Gallo, Buxton, and Kepler right now. Gordon was the Twins best outfielder last season and the one who displayed the most growth as well. It should be interesting to see what Falvey does between now and March.- 64 replies

What can we expect from Kenta Maeda?
tony&rodney commented on Adam Neisen's blog entry in Adam Neisen
I expect that Maeda could be a very valuable relief pitcher. Thus the Twins need another starter. Trade for Edward Cabrera from Miami. I would offer ONE (1) of Larnach, Wallner, Miranda, or Arraez. -

The Twins under Falvey/Baldelli play baseball like base running and fundamentals are old school and no longer relevant to the games, even to the point where they seemingly believe it hurts their abilities to win. Yet, I cannot believe this to be true, which means that the current product is very confusing. Dave St. Peter and all of the Twins management should understand that poorly executed slow baseball does not interest the general public. Something has to give. I surely don'y get it because Rocco was not the type of player who would appreciate being managed in the manner the Twins play their games. We should be expecting a major change. We have to because more of the same is death for our interest in our team.

Did the Twins Miss Something with Carlos Correa?
tony&rodney replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A possible huge issue is whether a medical concern negates any chance of obtaining insurance for a contract. No insurance means no contract without major changes in language regarding potential injury within the contract. Now that I read back a little, it does seem like the Twins may have overlooked the medical concern. After the Giants backed off the Twins held firm with their offer but also declared a wish to look further into Correa's medical history.- 13 replies
