I think he has one or two more seasons in him. He won’t break the bank because of his age and he is not knocking in more than 85 RBI. 90+ RBI tend to equate to the 10 million plus contract. Also we have Miranda ready to step in and start playing more 1B if Santana slumps next year. I doubt Killeroff is back. Larnarch or Wallner could move to 1B as well when E Rod gets called up. We have options at 1B should Santana decline. If he does he still provides value with his glove. I bet Minnesota could offer him a 6-8 million 1 year extension and he would probably take it as he would get to play for a contender and stay in the same place where he is comfortable and not worry about his next contract during the offseason.

The New Tampa Bay Rays = The Twins
Brandon replied to farmerguychris's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
We are not Tampa. I bet when they get normalized streaming and TV contracts settled for around 50-60 million in total revenue then payroll will start to go up depending on attendance. Maybe 140-150 million. Would be cool to see 160-170 million but I’m gonna doubt it. -
On defensive metrics, I think using several different ones as a cumulative guide to how their defense has been. Maybe take an average of their place in the different metrics to then get a feel of where they somewhat statistically rank then use the eye test to confirm or re-evaluate and re-rank as needed.

Griffin Jax Has a Strong Case as Twins MVP

But Jax has affected the outcomes of 56 games compared to the 23 games that Ober has pitched in. -
Griffin Jax Has a Strong Case as Twins MVP
Brandon replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Cole Sands has also been pretty consistent all season. Alcala has too minus the meltdown yesterday. I think Alcala missed a few weeks being on the DL earlier in the year if I remember correctly. and Duran has been effective. That and Jax is what has kept this bullpen effective when it matters most. I do agree that Jax has to be in the running for team MVP this year though as he has handled the most highest pressure situations in games throughout the year. The team MVP will be a fun debate after the season with so many different player types potentially deserving it. A reliever (Jax) a Starting Pitcher (Ober) position player (Santana) bench player (Castro), and Buxton, Correa, Lopez, and Miranda could enter the mix depending how the rest of the season plays out. -
I say trade him to Pittsburgh. He is from Pennsylvania. If he breaks out, so what he is helping the Pirates (a small market team you probably root for a little). And former Bench Coach now manager gets credit and a good player if he breaks out. At this point, I think he is a change of scenery guy. The struggles and injuries over 4 seasons is enough. I don’t want to pay him 2 million to stash in AAA because budgets and stuff. I do think he can be a good hitter, but he can now be that for another team. I do wonder what his value is in trade.
-
Has he been worth 10 million? No! It’s in the article, he is worth 8.6 million so far this year. I’m not moving the needle of his value. Do I mind if we overpaid a little for what he brings to the team? No I do not. I think he does lots of good things here as the pitchers say nothing but good things about him. I do hope he continues to hit. That is fun to watch.

No one on this site was happy when Hoffman or Coloumbe left the team. I think we preferred to have them in the pen and rookies in AAA to start the season. Lots of missed opportunities with losing both of those pitchers. Though I am happy to see Sands improving. I wasn’t sure he would make it. I think Winder is getting better and better too. Henriquez improves our return on the Garver trade if I remember correctly. I would be happy if Blewett came back up and doesn’t blowit🤪. The fun is being patient and watching this all play out.

I think at this point DeSclafani would have to sign a minor league contract. He would also likely spend the first month or two on the DL and ramping back up. if our young guys are doing a great job, We don't have to bring DeSclafani up. He would be Keuchel type insurance. I don't see the downside to that. If another team wanted to offer him a major league deal, then of course we don't sign him. You never get through a season with 5 starters so having a 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th available is always advisable. I also want to remind you that we had to keep Shoemaker on the roster an extra month because our 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th starters in the minors were all hurt. We had no one to replace him with. We are low on starting pitching options now. I'm surprised we haven't resigned Keuchel for depth the last few weeks as it seems Rich Hill is going to Boston.

There is no such thing as a bad 1 year contract and you can never have too much pitching. I’m good with a split minor league contract. 4 million prorated when in the bigs with incentives to make it up to 8-10 million. If he is pitching it’s because he beat out the rookies. Or because depth is being tested and it’s better to have more arms available. if he is here on a minor league deal and has to earn his spot , I don’t see why not. As far as the trade goes, I had him ranked 2nd behind Gonzalez in terms of value in the trade. I had him as a placeholder starter ahead of Topa but replaceable if a rookie earned it. I thought he had the potential to be a solid starter. But didn’t expect it. The Twins have been linked to him in the past. I could see them signing him to a deal this offseason.

Was the Manuel Margot Investment Worth It for the Twins?
Brandon replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes and no. A good rookie that you want to get playing time should come up when there is consistent playing time during an injury. You don’t want to start a rookie off as the bench piece. You move a veteran in decline to bench or someone who has experience and you know what they can and can’t do at the major league level. Coming off the bench is hard to do. Look at how bad other teams bench players are and you will gain a better appreciation of how good our bench has been.- 37 replies

Was the Manuel Margot Investment Worth It for the Twins?
Brandon replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the Twins were determined to get a veteran CF back up on a 1-year deal. Taylor wasn't budging off of his demands, so he was the best option in the eyes of management. I think he was supposed to be the backup CF when we got him. but he has been ok as a 1 year back up of stop gap. I doubt he is blocking anyone. If the Twins thought Keirsey could handle it, he would have been given opportunities. I think the role will go to Martin and Castro next year. also, E Rod will be pushing for a spot at some point next year. Margot is definitely not a game changer. And with his OF defense in sharp decline, his career at the MLB level will not last long either.- 37 replies

I don't see the Rangers doing that though. The Angels didn't originally plan to go higher in payroll. They changed and added because of Ohtani becoming a free agent. then reversed course when they fell flat and Ohtani was hurt enough to sit out the rest of the season. dropping players this way is bad business. the Rangers went into the season with their budget. to change direction and just let players go just to squeak under the tax threshold is insulting to other teams and the fans.

Varland pitched a quality start today. 6 innings 3 earned runs. also, first 4 starts 17 earned runs in 16 2/3 innings for a 9.18 ERA. His next 4 appearances 20 innings and 8 earned runs 3.60 ERA. He seems back on track and should be a 4.00 ERA pitcher moving forward. but I am more convinced now his future is in the pen.

Royals (Ragans) vs Twins (Varland): 8/14/24, 12:10pm
Brandon replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
I just don’t get having Margot bat lead off. A sub .300 OBP with no power and ok speed. It’s like having Gladden lead off for us again without the stolen bases. -
THe Twins have numbers in their favor and they have pitchers locked up for a long time too. Lopez, Ober, and Ryan are locked up for the next 3 seasons so 2025, 2026, and 2027 Woods-Richardson is locked up for the next 5-6 seasons so 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029 and possibly 2030 Paddack is here for just one more season 2025 We have Festa, Varland, and Mathews as ready to graduate and be major league starters or close to it. Varland should be moved to the pen soon. I think he prefers that over staying in AAA as depth that may not get another shot with all of these other starters passing him by. Next season we will also start to see others join the mix of being ready for a call up too. Lewis, maybe Preilipp, Morris, Culpepper. some of these guys could go to the pen too.

The Twins went from 6.5 to 1.5 games out in a week and the 87 Tigers gained 3 games on the Bluejays in the last 7 games to overtake them. But it usually takes time to catch teams in the standings. 1 game per week is normal progress.
