  1. I would also not call him an ace. But I'd rather have four years of him than 6 years of Graterol.
  2. Two points: He did meet your qualifications of an "ace" in 2016, but last year was his best year in terms of WHIP. He's also got great playoff numbers and lots of postseason appearances. He's also elite (by any measurement you use) against righties. Lots of innings in Japan, but they do have 6 days between starts, where in mlb you only have four. And one question: Who else would you want as an available starter in 2019 for Graterol? He's a relief prospect with a bad injury history. Chris Archer? Nathan Eovaldi? Jordan Yamamoto? I'd have rather dealt from our hitting prospects, but this makes our team better for 2020 and 2021, and we don't need Graterol in the bullpen this year, even if he was healthy, which is a big if. I agree that we still don't have an ace on the caliber of Justin Verlander or Gerrit Cole, but most teams don't. And JV still has not won a playoff game.
  3. My view as well. Hypothetically If the price/contract is the same, I think I'd rather have Maeda over Price. I would have gladly slotted Price in this rotation but Maeda has a higher floor.
  4. And Kohl Stewart. Also, don't forget Alex Meyer was recently the Twins top pitching prospect.
  5. Agreed. Although I bet he ends up being halfway between the next Fernando Romero and the next Trevor May. He will maybe be very useful in a bullpen role, eventually.
  6. I like it. For once we sell high on an unproven prospect and get a proven starting pitching asset. Maeda has been reliable and pretty durable, he's controlled for four years, and he's cheap. Oh, and he's actually pretty good. The likelihood Graterol becomes Romero V2 are quite high. The likelihood he ever starts in the rotation was low. Graterol only has 50 something innings above A ball.
  7. This thread is interesting just because there are so many different views. My Dad and I have different views on this as well, though we both are sick of Bert in the booth. I think the different views is why FSN is using a variety. I go to a lot of home games (like 25), but when I watch on TV, I typically don't watch the game live and use DVR with youtube tv, so I don't listen to 100% of the commentary. That said, I'm young, and I really like Smalley and Morneau. Morris is good too. I really like Torii as a person and as a player but not as a commentator. Latroy isn't much better. I really did not like Marney Gellner the couple of games she did last year. I really enjoy Morneau's recent behind the scenes insight; Plouffe would be a great option along the same lines here as well. As others have said, Bert seems to be soured on today's game. I want someone who is excited about the changes or at least neutral. Dick is perfectly adequate. He prepares very well and takes the job seriously. He really knows the mlb team.
  8. I wouldn't say they disagree about a player. They measure different parts of defense. For example, OAA (new) only measures outfield catches using catch probability. OAA doesn't differentiate outfield positions either. That's why every centerfielder has a positive OAA number. They should all be better at catching than corner outfielders. But not every centerfielder has the same UZR (not new) because UZR is positional. Some have poor arms. Some throw to the wrong base more than others. That's why I think you have to look at all of these but also understand what they mean. You can figure out what part of defense a player is poor or elite at. Some are not elite at every facet of defense.
  9. Exactly what I was going to say, except Smeltzer also seems to understand his plan and pitch mix. He also has good control. I just don't think Smeltzer's ceiling is that high. He's got that high spin rate FB, but below average velo and average secondary stuff.
  10. Smeltzer has outstanding control over multiple pitches and elite spin rate. I think he is more MLB ready to start than Thorpe. Littel will not start.
  11. The price for these guys will be much lower than it was last year at the deadline though. All of them are half a year rentals except Jon Gray. However, I also would bet the Twins DON'T get any of these guys. They will say that Rich Hill is their trade deadline impact starting pitching acquisition.
  12. Defensive metrics: if you don't look at WAR, or DRS, or UZR, or OAA, what do you look at? Fielding percentage is worthless. Eye test? Well, that works if you watch every single inning of every game and you're a scout. I think you have to look at advanced stats but also understand the pros and cons of each. If you don't look at them, please don't say someone is an elite defender because he won a gold glove. Offensive metrics: I really like OPS. It's pretty objective at how good a hitter is IMO. If your OPS is high, you hit for doubles and hit homers and you get on base a lot. I don't care about batting average. Give me Sano with his .920 OPS and .230 average over Luis Arraez and his .820 OPS but 310 batting average. Sano is the more dangerous hitter. OPS plus is useful for comparing AL and NL and guys who play at Coors Field. Pitching metrics: WHIP might be the most useful single stat. But I like ERA+ too. I always look at ERA and FIP together. I don't like fangraphs because it only uses FIP for WAR. I'm definitely a "counting stats are dumb" guy.
  13. Yeah, he was downright dreadful after he was dealt. I'd bet he returns to 220 innings of low 3 ERA ball in 2020 though.
  14. Agreed on those teams. Colorado has Story for two more years and Arenado for at least two more years. They thought they'd be contending last year and they're not tanking this year. At the deadline, there might be a few more arms available who I would want, like Robbie Ray, Jon Gray, Trevor Bauer, Marcus Stroman or Mike Minor. I think the Rangers will be good or a least decent though. Not sure on the Reds. Not sure I want Chris Archer.
  15. Seems like Senzel also would fill the same role that Nick Gordon could fill this year, if need be. If Marwin or AD get hurt, isn't Nick Gordon the first callup? Blankenhorn would be an option too.
  16. And the Reds got Castellanos. So say goodbye to Trevor Bauer on the Twins for now.
  17. Thanks, this is interesting and encouraging. I'm now going to check BR to see who he pitched against in those 28 innings... 11 innings vs Cle 5.1 vs KC 7 vs Det 3 vs CWS 1 vs Bos 1 vs Nats Mostly not good offenses. But it's not like 20 of the 28 innings were against the Orioles.
  18. You'd think he'd know better than to get really cheap tattoos too, but apparently not
  19. Hey! I was watching game 7 of the 1987 world series and the commentators talked about the Cardinals using multiple sequences with nobody on because they were concerned about the Twins stealing signs with pictures. 18:14 in this video Happens right after Joe Magrane crossed up his catcher.
  20. I predict he silences the haters and leads the 2020 Twins in WAR. He will be the best 9 hole hitter in the league.
  21. The Twins had a 4 year/84 million dollar deal on the table for over a month. When news came out that Donaldson wanted 110 million the Twins thought they were out. But no one bit. Adding the 5th year option to bring the total to 100 million was what did it.
  22. Danny Santana was a productive utility player with Texas last year. Not great defensively but his bat plays. Still under control there through 2022
  23. Escobar led all of MLB last year with 10 triples. Not a bad triple slash line either. .269 .320 .511 35 hr and 118 rbi. He did strike out 130 times and that obp would've been 8th on the Twins last year. His contract is smaller than Marwin's but he gets to play every day.
  24. I've mentioned before on other posts ( I think Aaron Gleeman has on the podcast too) that Cave and Rosario have very similar trade value. Cave is cheaper and has more years of control. Their ops was virtually identical last year because Cave walks (a lot) more.
