  1. Anybody concerned that the Dodgers are after Madbum instead of Ryu? There's a reason why, guys.
  2. Yikes, Happ at 17 million makes Odorizzi at 17 million look like an absolute steal. I don't want to give Happ a rotation spot, because the #5 spot is going to be filled by Smeltzer, Thorpe, Poppen or Graterol, especially for 17 million dollars. We need to get better in 2020, not stay the same or get worse. 2020 Happ will be worse than 2019 Gibson.
  3. Agreed, especially because I'd be willing to bet that 2020 Gibson is better than 2019 Gibson. I'll be ticked if the one FA pitcher we sign is worse than 2020 Gibson for the Rangers. Reds are not trading Sonny Gray.
  4. Few problems with this scenario. Assuming the Rockies would actually trade Jon Gray, you are way overvaluing Rosario. They might do Buxton for Gray. Or Gray for Arraez and Rosario. Littell is not going back to a starting role. I highly doubt the Indians would trade Lindor to the team competing for their division title in 2020-2021. I think that offer is fair though, or maybe even a little high, for two years of Lindor. But mostly, I'm not sure that makes the Twins better. Primary need is starting pitching, preferably someone better than or equal to Odo and Berrios. Secondary need is someone at first better than 2019 CJ Cron. None of our AA or AAA guys are ready for a #3 rotation spot in 2020.
  5. I would say the statement about Ryu is incorrect, since he's only pitched 180 innings twice in the last seven years. Last year he was one of the most effective pitchers in all of baseball. He has had two good years. One was last year, and the other was his rookie season at age 26. The other years he either didn't pitch at all or missed a ton of starts. He was also not effective in the postseason in 2018 and 2019= one quality start in four starts. He has been pretty good, when healthy, in the regular season. I'm convinced the FO is pursuing him because they're chasing a good deal. I hope he proves me wrong and stays healthy wherever he goes, but I'd rather have Madbum.
  6. I will be absolutely floored if we sign Madbum, Kuechel or Ryu. I don't think the predominant sentiment (at least on this site) is that the Twins are actively trying to make offers and get rejected to say "oh, we tried." I think we are in the agreement that they are more concerned with overpaying or "getting a good value" than they are with winning in 2020. Sometimes you have to overpay to chase a championship when the window is open. I think most serious Twins fans would be okay with overpaying to sign Cole. Or Madbum. The understanding is that you won't be getting your money's worth for the whole length of that contract, but you had to overpay to outbid other teams, and it's worth it if you really need elite SP in 2020-2021.
  7. The fact that Ryu has pitched over 180 innings only 2 out of the past 7 years is pretty dang concerning to me! Don't get wrapped up in 2019 stats. Madbum has been extremely durable and reliable over his already storied career. Dude is a gamer and wants to win, and he's still only 30. For me, it's not even close. That said, I will actually be surprised if the Twins sign either of these guys. I'm expecting Rick Porcello, Homer Bailey, Josh Lindblom or someone like that.
  8. I suppose the Angels will also be offering a 7-8 year contract to Cole as well. They could beat the Yankees deal.
  9. This is my thinking as well. Ryu might be as good as Madbum in 2020, but both will require a multiyear deal. I'd rather have Madbum for 5 years than Ryu for 3. Ryu has been the opposite of durable and reliable. Kuechel would be a great signing if we also improved the infield defense.
  10. With these SP prices being so high, I have increased certainty that the Twins will sign neither Madbum nor Ryu.
  11. Wow, isn't that exactly what the Yankees offered to Cole? They'll have to increase that offer now.
  12. Agreed, though having a guy with the best postseason resume of any current MLB pitcher probably helps our young staff somewhat. Clearly we have postseason issues.
  13. Well, I know that he hit .272 in the offensive oriented Japan Central League last year and isn't very good in the field. So why would we want him starting at an offensive position for a 101 win team? Byung Ho Park had absolutely eye popping numbers in the KBO.
  14. Please no. Just, no. We need to improve from CJ Cron 2019, not get worse.
  15. The Reds are going after Madbum as well. And Kuechel.
  16. Donaldson is definitely a big top line FA. He's won an MVP. No way the Twins will sign him as we will be outbid. I'd be thrilled if we signed Madbum but even he is the fourth best SP on the FA market this year. I wouldn't complain with Kuechel and Madbum as the SP signings but I can see why some people would. I'm afraid the Twins will end up with someone like Wade Miley or Rick Porcello and that's it, plus internal options at 1b. The team needs to be better for 2020, not worse.
  17. I personally think I would do that trade at this point. However, that's a steep price because Balazovic is our #2 pitching prospect, Buxton's ceiling is legitimately HOF, and Trevor Larnach is almost mlb ready and raked last year. We'd be counting on Kiriloff to take Kepler's spot in RF asap.
  18. The fact that Ryu has pitched 180 innings (and never hit 200 innings) only twice in the last seven years is pretty dang concerning. Same with Pineda. At least with Madbum you know you're going to get 30 starts from him. I would disagree; I'd much rather have Madbum than either of those two over a 3-4 year deal.
  19. Again, maybe switch Rosario with Buxton and maybe the Mets will pick up the phone. Buxton and Balazovic and Trevor Larnach would be close. But that would hurt.
  20. The problem with your argument is that none of those were open market FA signings. They were extensions, no? Not to mention that I'm too young to have seen Puckett, Molitor or Dave Winfield play in person. That was a long time ago. Even the small market teams occasionally dip into the top 10-12 in payroll a couple times each decade. Twins will be nowhere near that this year, even after 101 wins, and that is why everyone is complaining.
  21. Well, one of those pitchers pitched more than 200 innings and the other didn't even pitch 150 innings. One of them has been a world series MVP and the other prejudiced his team by getting suspended for PED's and missing the postseason. Madbum's era and Whip were both better than Pineda this year. Strikeout to walk ratios are similar. Everything I've heard about madbum is that he is the ultimate competitor and thrives in big moments. You want that guy on your team. He also has made it clear that he wants to hit, so I figured he'd end up on an NL team.
  22. Switch Buxton and Rosario there and you maybe get the Mets to listen.
  23. I think the White Sox will be inclined to out bid us.
  24. Twins are going to end up with Josh Lindblom. Or "internal options" for three starters and a first baseman.
  25. Team friendly deal. Would've been thrilled if the Twins did this.
