Yep, some of them work out, some of them don't. My point is the Twins historically have searched more for "value" than "sign the best guy." Nothing necessarily wrong with that if you develop your own pitching.
Kershaw isn't an ace any more. That doesn't mean he isn't valuable, as he will be very good when he pitches, but I think he either goes back to LAD, goes home to Texas, or retires.
Probably because that's what the Twins do in free agency. Sign #3 starting pitchers and hope they work out. Phil Hughes, Ricky Nolasco, Ervin Santana, Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey, Nick Blackburn, J.A. Happ, Michael Pineda, the list goes on.
Mauer will get in easily. Probably second ballot. Depends on what the voters do with A-rod. I'm not sure I would vote for Molina (not a good hitter, only 42 bWAR, and I wouldn't vote for Omar Vizquel either) or Posey (only 44 bWAR and not enough counting stats).
Here's mine. (Edited to reflect higher price for Gausman) Gray gets 4/60. Stroman gets 5/100. Buxton extended- 6 years, 120m, backloaded and incentive driven. He gets 10 this year. I'm bringing back Simmons because he played well while the team was near the division lead and he's a good bounce back candidate. Happy with this bullpen and rotation. Dobnak, when healthy and not jerked around by team plans, has been more effective than Pineda.

I'd think more than 1/100. Strasberg did. Mark Prior did. Harper was drafted as a 17 year old and then won ROY at age 19 by playing every day. Garrett Crochet was drafted last year and pitched for CWS last year. Just off the top of my head...
He was picked in 2015 and played in MLB the very next year. In 2017 he played every day. I don't recall the Twins promoting this aggressively, even with college players. When has a draft pick made an MLB debut the next year for the Twins?
Without looking it up...I think Ozzie Smith would be the leader in career defensive WAR, right? Brooks Robinson has to be up there too. Simmons actually has an outside HOF chance but needs to play 3-5 more years at 3 WAR or so. That will not happen if he has more seasons like 2021 obviously.
He can't possibly be worse than he was this year. None of the better shortstops are going to take a one year deal. I wouldn't be mad if the Twins also signed 2-3 legitimate starters and 1-2 bullpen arms.
I wouldn't bet against him though. I don't think he likes being in Houston. Hall of famers don't always follow the same aging trajectory as everyone else.
Ray- too expensive. Twins won't outbid a bunch of teams for him. Kershaw will be back with LAD. Verlander will want to sign with a contender. Maybe NYY. Scherzer goes back to LAD. Greinke goes to an NL contender so he can hit. Matz is getting a big multi-year deal.
I think Twins get outbid for Stroman, consider Thor too risky, and end up with someone like Jon Gray and then someone like JA Happ.
He will most definitely want to play for an NL team if the NL does not adopt the DH. Never bet against Greinke. If he doesn't retire, he'll still be a valuable arm next year for some contender.
Lewis played a ton of SS for the Twins in 2020 ST. He hit well too. I don't see any reason why the Twins don't view him as a SS. It's only other sites/writers who have said he might end up in the OF.
I agree with almost all of this but would be thrilled if the Twins signed Greinke to a 1-2 year deal. He's durable, effective, and shouldn't be super expensive given his age and bad August 2021. Verlander is a risk, but Kluber bounced back pretty well from similar circumstances. I would sign a glove first SS to a cheap 1 year deal. Even Simmons; he can't be worse with the bat than he was in 2021.
Thanks for this, was a pleasure to read. 7/133 actually seems more than fair to Buxton. I wouldn't make him the highest paid player in baseball. He's not Mike Trout, because Trout has actually proven he can stay healthy and win MVP's.
7/133 would be a huge gamble for the Twins. If Buxton wants more than that I'd honestly try and trade him this offseason.
If the Twins trade Josh and don't pay all or most of the contract, the Twins will have to give up a decent prospect. Donaldson was the 2nd best player on the team this season. If the Twins want to compete next season, which the FO is saying they want to, they won't trade Donaldson.
Twins won't really be interested in any of these guys. I expect them to look for a one year stop-gap until Lewis or Martin can assume the position. If you don't think Lewis is the SS of the future, you should have traded him already.
Story is a legit star. Semien is not a defensive SS already. Correa will get the biggest deal of these five.
Facts: The team was picked to win the division by most analysts, including those from outside of MN. The team finished last in the division. Baldelli has to take part of the blame for that.
You're missing the fact that aging occurs, and it occurs faster if you've been injured a lot. Buxton's primary asset is his speed. He's not getting faster, and he's not getting healthier. If you break a bone, or have surgery, you're never quite the same again in that area.
I'd bet that Donaldson plays more games than Buck next year. Donaldson has a history of injury issues but also can at least stay on the field as shown by his 44 career WAR and 4 seasons in top ten MVP voting. Buxton has zero years in the top ten of MVP voting.
Personally, I wouldn't be mad if the Twins gambled on Buxton and signed him to an extension, but if I'm the GM I'm definitely shopping the trade market this winter to see if a team will overpay.
I think the FO intends on putting the best team they can on the field in 2022. With that said, Donaldson is the every day 3B.
If Donaldson goes down with injury, bring up Miranda and give him every day looks. Depth is always good.
