    I'm going with the hot bat for now. Buck was ice cold before he went on the IL. If MAT gets cold, sure, insert Buck, but now is not the time.

    Debatable. Their offensive numbers are nearly identical at this point, and Taylor has been hot recently.

    I'm confused as to why this is even a debate. Buxton is having an awful season at the plate, hasn't been able to get healthy enough to play in the field, has a historical problem with injuries... and many are here debating who's going to get moved to St. Paul to make room for him in CF. Right now, this team is better with Buck on the IL than they are with him on the 25-man roster.

    Hard disagree at this stage in the season. Buxton's bat is practically useless, and I'm not swapping his bat in to replace Taylor's right now. With Buck's, everything below his hips always seems to be ready to succumb to injury, so maybe place him in LF where he (in theory) has less ground to cover and let Taylor stay in CF. This removes Gallo's whiffle ball bat from the lineup but right now that's a wash with Buck's, and it improves the defense in the OF.

    I had the regular ability to watch Taylor when he came up with the Nats and he flashed some of this power from time to time. This isn’t necessarily a surprise to see that he’s doing this, but it a little surprising to see the resurgence. What is not shocking are the stats that make him pretty consistent with a lot of the roster - a disproportionally high K rate. With the exception of Wallner, I would love to just see some contact hitting and gappers when the bases are loaded instead of swinging for the fences all the time.

    I just tuned in and in the last 5 pitches we've given up 2 HRs. For everyone's sake i'm turning the game off.

    If we're desperate for some added power, and I mean extreme levels of desperate, then it could be used in a pinch. But the current catcher rotation is fine defensively, and Jeffers needs those off days.

    Its guys like these two that put a team in serious contention for the playoffs when supplementing the team's stars - they stay relatively healthy and are consistent in their performance. In the case of this year's team - they are part of the core reason why we're still in the hunt. If three players - Correa, Buxton, and Gallo (throw-in Kepler's first-half performance if you want, too)- had played up to their potential, we would be in a significantly different position than we are right now. I think I counted 27 losses this year where we lost by 1-2 runs. Assuming those players played to their potential I'm easily willing to bet half of those loses (lets round down to 13) become wins, and we're looking at a record of 73-43 today... which would be the best record in baseball.

    In hindsight the team should have put Buxton on the shelf early this season when it was apparent that whatever was bothering him was hampering performance at the plate. I don’t fault the team’s decision to give DH a try, but when that started to yield limited results over long stretches they should have called it a lost season. It was pointed out earlier in the thread that the team seems to be playing better without him, and at least since the all-star break I would have to agree with that assessment.

    Looking at the radar and this looks like it’s going to be an all-day thing. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do with the Twins needing to be in Detroit tomorrow evening.

    I have a couple different perspectives. Did it makes sense to make trades if our goal was to get to the playoffs? No. I think we have a better than 50/50 chance to make it given the state of the division and our upcoming schedule. Did it make sense to make a trade if our goal was to get beyond the first round? Yes. The other thing I keep thinking about is that 1) we didn't have anyone on the current roster that a) we were willing to part and b) that someone wanted. 2) We didn't have anyone on the farm that we could afford to lose or nobody wanted what we had. Either way you look at that second part, its not good. We're either lacking depth, lacking talent, or both, and that doesn't give me a lot of confidence that this alleged rebuild for long-term sustainable success is remotely close to working for the front office.
