That was a good win...perhaps the best of the season. I am not sure how Castro got the barrel on that ankle-high pitch, but he certainly did.

Jacoby Ellsbury....same position...same potential...same kind of contract...all of the problems... -

I've defended Rocco more this year than in the past couple of years, but pulling Gray in a game where he's dealing, and has only thrown 85 pitches, is meant to do what? Piss Gray off? I'm sure that was achieved.

Thanks for clarifying. I knew about the five-inning minimum for a win for starters. I think that has been around for eons, but the other info is new to me.

It was a nice comeback. Lewis is making it hard to justify keeping him out of the lineup. I'm a bit concerned by Maeda. I'm afraid he has tweaked something again--note the lack of strikeouts. I'd keep a close eye on him in the next start. I think I'm still living in the 1980s. I thought relievers got a save when the person in the hole represented the tying run......I guess you can get a save for simply making one pitch regardless of the score...even if the score is like 18-2? That's weird...if it's true...(too lazy to investigate...)

I would hesitate to shut him down completely because he is a notoriously slow starter. Maybe DH him every other day if the foot is bothering him a little, but as was mentioned, how bad is the condition? I am much more concerned by Maeda's start against Cleveland--only three Ks. That makes me think he might have re-injured himself, but perhaps he just had an off night. Let's hope for the latter, but if he pitches this poorly the next time out, my guess is that he has re-injured himself and will need to be shut down again.

I've yet to see him play, actually, but SoftBank will likely make the playoffs despite La Tortuga's .136 BA (I'll bet he hasn't seen a fastball in about a month), They have a mystique that arises from getting the most out of their players.

The Twins played ugly baseball but the Rangers were uglier, and the bullpen was stellar. I want to criticize Donovan for the stupid base running in extra innings, but he did rescue the Twins with that basehit in the 9th, so it's a wash.

I never understood picking up Luplow. There is a handful of Luplow's floating around--barely major league quality but with experience.

How Did the Buxton Process Go So Horribly Wrong?
Aerodeliria replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I've said it before and I'll say it again, despite BB's love of the game, he is an injury waiting to happen ala Jacoby Ellsbury. I was concerned when we signed him to the big contract and nothing has unfolded to dissuade me from these feelings. -
The best teams also are good defensively.....................................fielding blunders again cost the Twins.

Multiple Twins Drop in Updated SDI Rankings
Aerodeliria replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thank you! I never want to underestimate defensive metrics. In the first two months of the season, errors or blunders in the field cost the Twins seven games. I haven't tracked errors lately, but I doubt we've improved much. Some players make glaring errors at key moments in the game (Polanco, Miranda, Kepler (not recently, fortunately), and in playoff games, bad habits, developed over time, tend to rear their ugly heads. Of all of my beefs with how the team is managed, this is the biggest for me. Some players may not need reps (Correa, Taylor), but IMHO, they are still vitally important. Good defensive habits are developed through repetition, which is reflected in routine under stressful situations and trust in other players.- 25 replies

I do like what I saw, which is plenty of tempting pitches just out of the strike zone and varying velocities, but, as others have mentioned, it is one game. If he can do that three or four times in a row, that would be a win-win.

I'm impressed that Jenkins hit the homer off a slider/curve ball...and not one of those floaters that just stay in the hitting zone for like five seconds. That pitch had some downward bite and he just tracked it and crushed it.

One thing that has dipped under the radar is that the Twins have been playing much cleaner baseball. I'm happy to keep Castro over at 3rd. He makes the left side solid. The right side is a bit shakier, but not horrifying, same with the OF. The catching has been fine.

I think the crucial question raised by Mr. Palmer, which gets lost in the weeds of hindsight analysis, is, "Are the Twins good evaluating their talent?" I think another question is "Are the Twins good at maximizing the potential of the players they have in the system?" It's hard to put a positive spin on the answer to either of those questions, so I would say that hindsight is not necessarily 20-20 if it might lead to positive re-evaluation and reflection. As it stands, however, the Twins don't have a great record in this matter IMHO.

I just like the title. It's always my pet peeve when pitchers start walking guys. It cost the big boys again today (Balazovic's two BBs put the game out of reach after the three-run blast). A silly side story, I went to a game with my wife between the Yomiuri Giants and the Chuinich Dragons a couple of years back. The Dragon's starter walked the first three batters. My wife is not a particularly avid fan of baseball but Chuinichi Dragons is her hometown (Nagoya) team, so she wanted to take me to the game. I turned to her and said that the Giants are going to score a lot of runs this inning. I think she asked 'why' or something, and I said because now the pitcher is probably going to throw a fastball right down the middle of the plate (my wife now uses the term 'watermelon' to describe these kinds of ptiches). Sakamoto (I believe) was the hitter and he doubled. I think the Giants ended up scoring 8 runs in that inning and after a few more walks in inning number two, they tacked on another 5. By the 5th or 6th inning, I think they had walked about 10 Giants' hitters and had accumulated 21 runs. We left the game because we got cold. We still had fun, but 'walks really do haunt.'

The Twins relievers walked three batters in the 8th and 9th...the most egregious was Moran walking the first two batters with a four-run lead. That's really inexecusable IMHO. I have no problem with Pagan's pitch. That's gonna happen, but the BBs are not winning baseball.

My question exactly...that was an ugly inning for him. He got beat by a .154 spray hitter with zero homeruns until today. Use the 98 mph fastball against those weak hitters!!
