Nibbled to death by ducks. Sigh. Just one of those days/nights at the ballpark. Let's hope bats ignite tomorrow!

I agree, We seem to have a very poor track record for finding and "developing" high quality starting pitchers. Guys like Berrios and Gibson were good, but never the elite sort of starter that the team needs to go deep in the playoffs.
-
That is indeed sad news. Thanks for the update. Passing away at 58 is much too young.

Well, Cleveland could certainly cut into our lead. Let's not get too comfortable. As we have see in the past, things can fall apart rather quickly. My biggest concern is the health of the team. Can we depend on guys like Ryan and Ober for more effective innings? What about that bullpen? Can Buxton come back and be productive? When will we see Kiriloff again? Or even Nick Gordon? Can Correa stay healthy and contribute? So many "if" factors during the next 6 weeks, but I remain (somewhat) cautiously optimistic.

Sad to see, but looks like a true assessment.

Thanks for another good roundup. One item that surprised me was the mention of Jenkins playing his first game at a position other than DH, in this case center field. Why were they only using him at DH up to this point? And which position does he fit best looking to the future?

Very good article. One thing you wrote really stood out for me: It is clear that Taylor, whether through the Twins' advice, on his account, or both, is sacrificing contact for power. Like you and others, I've been surprised by Taylor's power and home run total this year. But the increase in strikeouts is disturbing and certainly DOES fit into the pattern and problem we've seen with Buxton and other Twins batters. The home runs are nice to see, but I'd also like to see Taylor getting on base more often and using his speed to help the team.

Week in Review: Lewis Returns, Division Lead Grows
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The whole Buxton situation has been so weird this year, but I also don't see him returning to the field this late in the season. Can we hope for a healthy Buxton to play CF next year? That remains a mystery too.- 22 replies

Week in Review: Lewis Returns, Division Lead Grows
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think you are right. As much as Gallo has struggled this year, he's still the kind of player that can magically step up in the late innings and win a game with a towering home run. He still has some value, however minimal.- 22 replies

Very interesting and provocative question. And I have no idea which one I would choose a month from now. But this week, with concerns about Jax's recent performance, you gotta go with Pagan.

Another big game for Eddie Rosario in Atlanta, going 3 for 5 with a homer and 4 RBI. However, overall, his season has been pretty mediocre, now batting .249 with an OBP of .296

Sonny Gray and the Pursuit of a Cy Young
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As far as Sonny's chances at a Cy Young award, I really can't see that happening this year. He's been good, and once in a while very good, but I just don't think he's had the type of season that wins the award, Then again, he could start pitching shutouts (or like the last game, give up no runs for 6 innings) for the next month and then maybe that will put him in the driver's seat.- 23 replies

Sonny Gray and the Pursuit of a Cy Young
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Bumped on Opening Day for Joe Ryan, Gray still had the most impressive track record. Interesting article, but wasn't Pablo Lopez the opening day starter this year?- 23 replies

An intriguing idea, but I don't see that happening this year. Then again, ask me again a month from now after Lee has settled in at AAA. We all know that Brooks Lee has very good hitting tools, but what is the consensus about him as a fielder? Will he be gold glove caliber at any position? Like others, I don't see him sticking at shortstop, and many think third base is his eventual spot. But you know, to me he LOOKS like a first baseman, and I think he could adapt to that position, so the idea of moving him there in the not-too-distant future isn't such a crazy idea.

I'll add a big "YES!" to the other posts that are impressed with Winokur so far. As noted, it often takes time for some of these high school picks to adjust to the pros, but Winokur is doing mighty fine thus far. Very happy to have him in the organization.

I was thinking the same thing. That was a very borderline call on that "strike," and if it had been made against us I'd be howling and hollering too! I think we dodged a bullet on that one.

Thanks for another great minor league report. I love reading about our prospects. The chart of ages was very interesting this time around too. Not that it makes me feel older than I already feel ... but yikes, some of these kids really ARE young. Just reinforces the notion that we need to be a bit patient with them as they are "developed" in the system.

What Twins Free Agent Starter Do the Twins Bring Back?
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm a big fan of Maeda and agree on all the points you made. I would love to have him back with the Twins and I hope it happens. As far as Sonny Gray, I just don't get the feeling that he really wants to stick with the Twins, and frankly, I think we should move on from him at this point. I'd like to see the Twins come to some sort of agreement with Mahle, just so that we can salvage something from that unfortunate trade with the Reds last year.- 69 replies

I'm still trying to get my head around that teaser of a Darryl Strawberry headline. Did you know Darryl Strawberry slugged 1.000 for the Saints in 1996? No, not at all! Any more details on that short stint with the Saints? At that time, it obviously wasn't a Twins affiliate, but what was Strawberry doing there? On some sort or rehab assignment? Back from drug purgatory? 1996 remains a VERY hazy year for me. That was the year I moved overseas to Southeast Asia and at that time, I didn't have any online access and only infrequent access to any printed newspapers that carried sports from the USA, so, the whole Strawberry soap opera (being traded, injuries, drug issues, what else?) remains a gray area for me, not to mention anything else that happened that year or the following year.

My crystal ball never works when I want it to, but man, if that trade deadline has been pushed back to this week, I would have sold sold sold! Unload and start over. That disappointing Tigers series totally took the wind out of my sails in regards to possibly winning a playoff series. Good game in Philly yesterday, but I'm still not convinced that this team can advance past the first round. So yeah, in retrospect, I'd unload all of the veterans for something/anything. But ... that that ship has sailed, so we just have to hope that guys like Kepler and Gallo start producing again, and our starting pitching kicks it up a notch. Other than Lopez and Maeda, I'm not very confident about the arms in the rotation.

Thanks for another thorough report! Very happy to see Jaylen Nowlin with a good game, and as you noted, for someone with control issues, the fact that he only give up 1 walk was very encouraging to see.
