  1. I hope they can stretch him out more this year too. Okay, I understand the conservative developmental approach to some degree. He's still young and smaller in stature and they don't want to "overextend" his arm, or whatever. But c'mon, if you are going to be a starting pitcher in the system you NEED to be pitching more innings at some point in the near future. I realize that starters aren't pitching many complete games these days, but is it too much to ask for a 6-inning outing?
  2. On another musical/baseball note, I read about the "Innings Festival" in Tempe, Arizona later this month. In addition to "normal" musical acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimmy Eat World, and Greta Van Fleet, there is an "MLB Legends" portion of the show featuring Ryan Dempster, Jake Peavy, Matt Kemp, Luis Gonzalez, Bret Saberhagen, Dave Stewart, Dontrelle Willis, and Eric Gagne, Presumably they will be playing guitars and other instruments.
  3. Very good article. I'm certainly not giving up on SWR yet. If he and Martin can produce for us this in the next year or two, we may end up liking that Berrios trade after all. As for SWR going into this year, hopefully he starts the year in St. Paul and can find his groove and confidence, all while developing his pitch repertoire. I think he will eventually be a productive member of our starting rotation, but I hesitate to put a timeline on it.
  4. Man, at this point, I'm just itching to see Prielipp pitch an actual game!
  5. Thanks for that. I keep forgetting about those Winter Leagues. I used to enjoy looking at the stats in the off-season. Besides Venezuela, is there still a Dominican or Puerto Rican Winter League?
  6. Wow, I missed that one. Thanks!
  7. Yes, it's been nearly 2 full years. I think he had the surgery around May of 2022. I don't expect miracles, but after reading Paddack's own comments, I think he'll surprise the naysayers this year. I expect that he will be a productive member of the starting rotation, albeit with some sort of innings or pitches limit.
  8. yes indeed! I can't remember when the Twins had this many quality pitching prospects in the minor leagues. A lot of young players to be excited about, or at least to be very hopeful. I hope this much vaunted pitching pipeline doesn't spring a leak!
  9. Good to see this thread started for 2024. I'm curious if we will see Astudillo in the MLB again? I realize he's getting older and he didn't do much in Japan last year, but I'd love to see him resurface somewhere.
  10. I'm not so sure that we are "substantially" better this year compared to last year. Many positives on this team, but a LOT of uncertain aspects too. Many of us are banking on a healthy team, but you have to assume that there will be some injuries. My main concern remains the starting pitching. If we end up having career years from the likes of Lopez, Gray, Paddack and some of the younger kids, hey we will be sitting pretty, but I'm not that confident that will happen. And there are also health concerns with Buxton, Kiriloff, and Correa. And what happens if one of our catchers is injured? Hey, I'm an optimist, but I'm also realistic enough to know that this current team isn't really a World Series contender. I just hope the realist in me is very wrong.
  11. These recent pickups/waiver claims ARE a bit baffling. They all could be useful players, but not ones that vault us into some sort of super team. Is there still a trade coming? I honestly can't tell or even get a feel for the front office's thinking at this point. Of course just wanting to make a trade, and actually getting it done, are two different things. Nevertheless, as so many others have already mentioned, we are going to need to move a couple of bodies off the 40-man roster to make room for Santana and someone else. The plot thickens!
  12. If he's healthy and can get his hitting back on track is one thing, but with his dubious glove "skills" where does he play?
  13. Good post and analysis. I like the idea of going beyond the "perceived" ideas and looking at things from a broader perspective. I'm also hoping he can pitch better than expected, or at least better than most of us are expecting. The results the past 2 years are not that encouraging, but hey, it's a new year and a new team and new coaches and manager, so hopefully it clicks and he looks like an all-star once July rolls around. Stranger things have happened!
  14. I'm always skeptical about signing these ageing power hitters, but I was very wrong about Nelson Cruz when the Twins signed him, so maybe Santana will prove to be ageless too! On the surface it seems like a good signing on several levels, plus he can still play in the field. Hoping he stays healthy and productive, plus that always helpful "veteran presence" can't hurt either.
  15. What's the consensus at this point? Are the Twins done making trades for pitching or is there maybe another major move before spring training? Getting DeScalfani seems like more of an "old Twins" move to patch up a wobbly rotation and add some stability. Yeah, the proverbial innings eater. Or is he? As others have noted, he doesn't really move the needle and make us better. Unless of course he pitches as well as he did three years ago and then maybe, maybe, he becomes a crucial part of the rotation. But that's all guesswork at this point. I'm beginning to think that the Twins will go with what they have and perhaps try and trade for another arm later in the summer if that's needed.
  16. I also love these articles! This one gives us an especially good overview of Bowen and what we can expect. After the trade was made, he seemed like a "lesser" part of the package, but after reading more about him I'm excited. Plus, he seems to have a great attitude and work ethic. Make it happen!
  17. It looks like this year's 40-man roster game of musical chairs has begun!
  18. I second the motion! Good report about a player I hadn't really read much about until now. Looks like he has the tools to be successful. Hopefully the Twins are patient and "develop" him to be a force in the majors someday soon.
  19. Or at first base. The next "Stretch" McCovey!
  20. Guys like Soler, Duval, and even Merrifield would make nice additions to the team, but I'm also skeptical that the front office will spend the money on free agents this year. Looks like it could be another late Feb. or March signing for someone like Solano again.
  21. Hey, maybe that is the front office's strategy at this point. Who knows? Yes, we have a good rotation as things stand now, but unless one of the guys like Paddack or Ryan is pitching like a Cy Young candidate by July, we are going to need that extra arm.
  22. You are right: Kepler alone won't net us a top starter. For that we will need to give up one of our top prospects like Brooks Lee or E-Rodriguez. But unless we want another early playoff exit (assuming we even make the playoffs) we absolutely need another quality starter for the rotation. This guy we picked up from Seattle is certainly not the answer. We have some good young arms, but I'm not sure how far they will carry us.
  23. Thanks for that notice, I hadn't seen that posted anywhere else. The Angels could be interesting this year with Ron Washington as manager. Of course they still need a few more quality pitchers or they will miss the playoffs once again.
  24. Sorry to nitpick, but Astudillo was with several other organizations before the Twins picked him up. I think Philadelphia was the first team to sign him, and then he was briefly with Atlanta and Arizona, before the Twins and Miami. He was in Japan last year, but as for this coming season, I haven't heard any news!
