Good post! The whole definition of "young" and "old" , especially relative to baseball players, seems to have changed over the years. Or has it? It also depends, of course, on the player, and sometimes the position. Think about those veteran knuckleball pitchers like Phil Niekro, and Hoyt Wilhem, and even Tim Wakefield; they were productive into their early 40s, as were DH guys like Nelson Cruz and Jim Thome.

Yes, it seems like we have an abundance of very good prospects that may be competing for playing time at similar positions. Getting to be a logjam! It will interesting, or perhaps infuriating, to see which players get the most playing time this season. Anyway, I enjoyed this article. Told me a lot about a player that I knew very little about previously. Good stuff!

Twins in Position to sign Jordan MOntgomery
Doctor Wu commented on Doc Munson's blog entry in Fantasy GM
Hey, I'm old and jaded, but I don't think Montgomery is worth that sort of money. For a pitcher over the age of 30, who has not really been among the elite arms, that's a huge overpay. And I wouldn't go after Snell either, for the reasons given in the article, plus he's just a very erratic pitcher. Great one year and mediocre the next. And none of these guys are young, so a multi-year contract seems too risky. Even if it means trading a quality prospect, I'd prefer that route, at least this year, if we want a better starting pitcher to add to the rotation. -
Offseason Status Update: Is This It?
Doctor Wu replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At this point I have no idea what the front office will or won't do. Sure, still a month to go before the season starts, and they have made late trades/moves in the somewhat distant past (getting Dan Gladden) and the recent past (the Paddack-Pagan trade), so obviously there could be another big trade or not-so-big free agent signing. Surprise me! -
I think that is indeed one of the most important factors entering into this season. A lot more arms to choose from, and they mostly look like good ones. I have to admit that I'm not entirely sold/thrilled/optimistic that the recently acquired "over 30" guys are going to make our bullpen the best in the league. Hey, I hope they all perform as expected or even better, but who knows how the bullpen mix will look once August rolls around. I'm more excited about some of the young arms we already had in our own system, and the possibility of some of those guys contributing this year too. Yeah, the depth looks good, let's hope for good results.

This may be a bit off topic, but while we are talking mostly about left field, or outfielders in general, so I'll throw this one out: Who among our minor league prospects has the best defensive tools? Above average arm, good range, able to leap and take away those potential home runs. I hear all sort of talk about batting skills and strikeout rates, but what about the other intanglibles?

I'm still sitting on the fence in regards to the Santana signing too. I don't hate it or anything, but if Kiriloff is healthy and ready to play full-time, it seems more like a backup plan. Which is okay, but I'm hoping that Kiriloff is ready by April and can start most of the games.

I'll agree with that. If he wants to cut down on the strikeouts, he needs more regular playing time, and maybe --- once again --- the best place for him will be in St. Paul.

How Far Has the Twins Rotation Fallen?
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems like it's still a long way from now, but opening day for the Twins is on March 27 this year! I guess the days of starting the season in early April are over. But yeah, you are right, the Paddack trade came late that spring in 2022, so there could still be a surprise or two before opening day- 79 replies

Yikes! Not much off-season left at this point, but it's certainly possible another interesting move or two could happen before the regular season starts.- 79 replies

How Far Has the Twins Rotation Fallen?
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good point about Varland. He could end up being a sneaky good addition to the rotation this year. As much as I wanted that extra veteran arm on the staff this year (and no, the guy (DeScalfani) we got from Seattle doesn't move the needle in that respect) I don't think our rotation has "fallen" from last year. I expect (okay, I'm hoping) guys like Ober and Paddack to exceed expectations, and also hoping the Ryan has a more consistently good year. So, I think we are looking pretty good on paper, at least for most of the regular season. Let's play ball!- 79 replies

Will The Twins Get Their Postseason SP?
Doctor Wu commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
I think it's highly unlikely they will, or would, sign him either. I also understand the need to not upset people/fans by signing any player with any sort of controversial baggage. But we are all humans and make mistakes, I think most people are forgiving enough to give someone a second chance, especially if can perform at an all-star level again. But at this point, I'd be shocked if ANY team in the league signs him this season. -
Former Twins, Where are they now? 2024 edition

I'm sad. I haven't had a Bubba to root for in many years now. So fleetingly a Twin, and now gone already. Their is a void in my life! -
A Look Back at Nick Gordon’s Time With Minnesota
Doctor Wu replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I liked Gordon a lot too. A fun player to watch. So much "could have been," especially for such a high draft choice. But as everyone has said, his fit this year for the Twins wasn't a good one, and his playing time would not have been much, even if he had made the roster out of spring training. Hopefully, he stays healthy and gets a chance for some substantial playing time in Miami. I would love to see him thrive in his home state.- 6 replies

Several others --- actually MANY others, based on these posts --- have shown enthusiasm about our bullpen this season. But I'm still not sold on the idea of having ---, what was cited? --- the number one bullpen in the league? Really? Okay, we've added some interesting arms via trades, but are any of them truly elite or even trustworthy arms they we can count on when the game is on the line? I'm not trying to be a naysayer, but I'm just skeptical that all of sudden our bullpen is going to strike terror into the hearts of opposing teams. Yeah, Duran is still a weapon, but are we really that strong otherwise?

Oh man, that would great for Pablo to have that kind of season. At this point, I'm just hoping he stays off the IL and is effective as he was last season.

Not to be critical, but did we really lose any defense with Polanco leaving? I don't think he was ever a gold glove candidate at second base, but I think we'll definitely miss some of his power and timely hits. That said, I think it was to move on and give some of the younger players more playing time.

Man, that's a whirlwind of 6 months for the poor guy. Wonder where he'll be a month from now?

As a few others have said, I'm also surprised that Balazovic passed through waivers. I would have thought he was worth a gamble for some teams in need of pitching. But happy to have him back with the Twins!

I'm high on Paddack too. I truly think he is going to perform above expectations this coming season. Hey, I'm no pitching expert or stat demon, but I just like how he came back last year with some fire and grit. He still wants to be a top-flight starter and I'm hoping that's going to happen ... this year.

Will The Twins Get Their Postseason SP?
Doctor Wu commented on Doctor Gast's blog entry in Doctor Gast's Blog
I'm with you on this idea. I particularly never liked Bauer as a person/personality, but if he or Clevinger look like they can add that extra something to our starting rotation and make us force in the playoffs, I wouldn't hesitate to sign either one of them. And it won't cost us a valuable prospect either. Seems like a plausible idea to me. The whole idea of "morality" or "values" can be twisted all sorts of different ways. Hey, didn't we have players like Cruz and Polanco who were suspended for PED's, and yet now people are now shuddering at the idea of a Bauer or Clevinger on the team? Once again; if they can show us good results, come over to the Twin Cities and help us win a pennant, -
I wish NIck Gordon good luck too! As you mentioned, he is from Orlando originally (and so was I), so there may be some comfort factor going back to his home state. I still think he can be more than a utility player, so I hope he gets to show his stuff in Miami. I'm sorry to see him leave the Twins, but as almost everyone else has already noted, barring further injuries to other players, there wasn't much of a spot for him this coming season. No, the trade was not a big surprise, the only real surprise is that we got what looks like a decent MLB player for him, rather than a prospect who would be playing in the minors this year. So yeah, it's looks like a good trade for the Twins, and hopefully another win-win for both teams.

Good article and a very interesting idea to make a comparison with Beltre. I don't think anyone would have thought that Beltre had even a remote shot at the HOF going into his age-30 season. He didn't have the constant injury woes of Buxton, but he was mainly a glove-first player that was inconsistent at the plate, and bounced around with a few teams. But man, he sure turned that around for the rest of his 30s! Could Buxton do the same? Hmm ... maybe. Most of us are members of the of "I'll believe it when I see it" idea of Buxton being able to handle center field for a full season ... all while staying healthy and hitting above the Mendoza line. It's not impossible, but at this juncture I'd bet against if happening. Which makes me sad. I want Buck to succeed so much, but it's hard to maintain the hope each season.

Former Twins, Where are they now? 2024 edition
Doctor Wu replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Man, those obits of players I remember as young players is making me feel old. Ugh, on further reflection, I'm no spring chicken any longer either. In any case, sad news about Brant Alyea. He wasn't a Twin for that long, but I DID have his baseball card!
