  1. What race? The absolute worse thing that can happen to a club…is to pretend mediocrity is something other than mediocrity. The division is a bad joke. The Twins are…what…coming up on 10 games UNDER 500 against the league ex/Royals. Tough argument that’s even mediocrity. The FO can only make the situation worse (and longer) by telling themselves the lie that the club is competitive or in a race of any meaningful kind. They’re not. And they’re not. Youth, and sell at the deadline, are the right things to do. And the division is bad enough that you might still win it, for the little that’s worth in 2023. Not that I’ll hold my breath that this FO would do the right thing.
  2. And all the rule did….is now we bring in position players to pitch the instant the magic number is hit…like with two out in an inning. It’s a bad bad look, IMO.
  3. I tend to agree. More pitchers carried on an active roster than ever. And yet we need to use position players…on a regular basis (in blowouts).
  4. Finally! An at-bat where Buxton was healthy!!
  5. Rocco frantically rearranging chairs on the Titanic. Starting with the lightest chairs. It’s not going to matter obviously, other than to draw more embarrassment upon himself and the club.
  6. God I hope we’re sellers at the deadline. Please, please don’t pretend any proximity to first place in this division means anything. Maybe some team out there is looking for a first base coach.
  7. offensively, we just can't seem to buy a strike-out when we need one
  8. It’s a vicious circle. Nobody tries to string 3+ base hits because BA’s are too low, and it’s highly likely to fail as a strategy. Meanwhile, BA’s are low, because nobody tries to get base hits. It’s a self-fulfilling spiral that the league has been experiencing for some time now. It’s ugly baseball. And the 2023 Twins play the same ugly game that the best teams in baseball are playing. They’re just not good at it. It was genius for MLB to shrink the package size to 2.5 hours. Less of a bad product is easier to push to the masses. Reminds me of the old joke… “We held a raffle for Twins tickets….the winner got 3 tickets.” “What was the second place prize?” ”5 Tickets”
  9. If only the goalie didn’t give up so many goals, he’d be good. If only the pitcher didn’t give up so many really hard hits… It’s the same argument. Just needs to be better overall. AAA. Three years ago, I wouldn’t have bet 2 cents that Varland would ever see AAA, let alone the majors. He may surprise yet again, or maybe this is the ceiling. The International League ballparks, including CHS, are HR factories…an excellent situation for working on keeping it in the park.
  10. Yes. It’s a species with a very short life span. Usually only observed in the early summer. Rarely seen during the hottest and driest months, and rarer still beyond that.
  11. Wow! Only 4 teams in the league are further out of first place than Boston is right now. And they’re in fifth/last place. That’d be quite a run. Only 2 out in the wild card though.
  12. Just need to load ‘em up for Vasquez, and we’re right back in it.
  13. The 0-2 change up, belt high, center cut. It’s Moran’s calling card. (well, that and ball-4)
  14. He’s not injured or they wouldn’t be playing him at all. The club has set clear president there. He was stealing bases less than a month ago, and he’s been resting on IL for a big chunk of the time since then. He’s DH’ing as risk mitigation and a way of maintaining and prolonging, IMO. The narrative that Buxton is a great hitter ‘when healthy’ is confusing to me. He’s a really good hitter when he’s hitting HR’s at an elite rate…and only then. This is pretty established at this point. He’s had dozens of stretches like this offensively, and if he’s playing in the 2nd half…regardless of where he plays…he’ll probably have a hot streak or two in him before the season’s over.
  15. Maybe. But my opinion is that he’s a horrifically erratic hitter and always has been. He’s a low OBP guy who strikes out a lot (both K% and OBP actually currently BETTER than last year)…and the offensive value is completely tied to HR’s and XBH. And those rates have been otherworldly, unsustainably high probably, the last couple years. But this year those rates have normalized pretty much right from the beginning. He’s sitting at a career 770 OPS right now, and 740 this year.
  16. I’ve questioned his very existence from the moment he signed. Kinda still do. But who knew his 777 OPS (well above career average btw) would make him look like Rogers Hornsby in this lineup.
  17. Buxton wasn’t hitting BEFORE he took that pitch to the ribs. Maybe a short rehab assignment?? Gallo got one during the same time frame. No. Instead, let’s bat him cleanup and leadoff first two games back. I expect Buxton will eventually have a hot streak or two yet. But head-scratching strategy with him coming back.
  18. I was totally with Gray when he was taking this stance publicly last season/off-season. And I think Baldelli has actually responded some in this regard in 2023. But it’s a two way street, and it’s not solely about results…it can also be about how inefficient you’re being, mechanics, etc. When Gray is off (which hasn’t been often this year), he’s horrifically inefficient…often nibbling until the count is full or nearly so, constantly trying to get batters to chase until he finally is forced to throw something over the plate. Rocco’s let him run a few times this year under those circumstances, this time he didn’t. I also remember a game not long ago where Gray lost it (out of nowhere, when cruising) so fast that a decent lead was lost before Rocco got a reliever into the game. I’ve been a big critic of Rocco’s bullpen management, but this instance doesn’t really get me worked up.
  19. Yeah, drafted in the 8th round out of college just like Dozier was. I want to compare him to Dozier, but even Dozier was in the show by age 26. The relative disadvantage for Williams is that the threshold for the bat is higher for a 1B,DH, and ‘emergency’ catcher. He’s really always hit, but it doesn’t seem that the twins or scouts/analysts really ever considered him a mlb catching prospect.
  20. Well, if Kepler in the lineup every day spites Gleeman… then every cloud really does have a silver lining.
  21. Love it with all leagues in full swing! Although, the Jordan Balazovic comeback train has jumped the tracks. Results for 6 of the last 7 outings now have been anywhere from not good to really bad.
  22. Giving up singles and picking them off might be the way for Pagan to go.
  23. Not feeling sorry for Gray. He’s been a Jake Odorizzi/Kyle Gibson- level nibbler lately.
