    31 games remaining, 9 of which will be against teams over 500. The Twins can’t lose the division this coming week. But they could win it, for all intents and purposes.

    This is satire, right? We can always hope for a torn ligament or two in the wrists as well, giving the Twins an even better chance. Best possible outcome: he can’t pitch or swing a bat, and Twins snipe him at $300M over 10 years to greet people at the turnstiles.

    I haven’t been a robo ump guy. Over the long run, the bad calls even out. But, man…a couple of recent games, including last night…at some point it’s embarrassing for the league and game.

    Might lean Carew…But Killebrew would have more spots in the top 10 all-time Twins seasons than would Carew. Killebrew was hands-down the best offensive player in Twins history…even though he had at least one elite season before he even came to Minnesota. Killebrew’s 1961 season get overlooked, as well.

    It’s an interesting sentiment, and not lost on me. Having said that…referring to the new schedule as ‘even’ or ‘balanced’ is misleading (and not accurate). Not reflecting on the author here, because it seems a common practice. Still play divisional opponents 14 times a year (down from 19). That’s still more than twice as much as other teams in the AL…and still over a third of the season dedicated to divisional rivals. I don’t think that will change much the degree to which we learn to love, hate, and respect their stars.

    Looks bad now, but at the time, I didn’t hate it. As I figured he’d be a great center fielder for 100 games a year and average to modestly above average hitter. (I too was apparently overly optimistic.) But, to your point, Buxton has really NEVER had a good season. The only thing that could be called a ‘season’ was 2017, and only his defense was good that season. His entire career is a string of small sample results…including small sample ‘seasons’…ricocheting between phenomenal and completely awful…great when fly balls are going over the fence, and really bad when they aren’t. Making him what he’s always been…a dangerous, but overall only slightly above average hitter. The K’s and very low OBP were there from day 1, and have always been there.

    CF, LF, bench, shut down, buyout/retire….ANYTHING but DH. Anything. And oh…by the way, if he does play, slide him down in the BO…way down…7,8,9 depending on which catcher is playing or Gallo is in, etc. He may have a hot streak coming…always impossible to say with him, but we don’t need to bat him 3-5 waiting for it to come.

    Ironically, he has some Gallo in him. K’ing over 30% at AA and the Saints this year. But, yes…Joey is at 40%, and Severino is young enough that you’d think he could improve on it.

    Yes, Buxton’s been great defensively…and that’s where a very big chunk of his WAR has come from…a flawed defensive component of the metric. He is a slightly above average offensive player (less this year, and always oscillating between great and horrible)…which is a far cry from what expectations were. And he never comes close to playing full seasons. If you want to consider him a top 15 Twin in terms of actual accomplishments on the field…that’s your opinion. To me, he’s not close to that. And I hope for better things from Lee and Jenkins….mainly, as my post stated, that they can take their current talent (which is absolutely less than Buxton started with)…and consistently BUILD on that, which Buxton and Sano never did…whatever the reasons.

    Coincidentally, my father was a Detroit fan. He was 35 when Detroit won the World Series in 1968. I’m pretty sure game 7 was a weekday afternoon game…he about tackled me when I got off the school bus. So no, these are not my parent’s Tigers. 🙂 Yes, they’re on the upswing, but a long, long way from good. Although, they’re still trying to win games, which makes a big difference at this point in the schedule.

    You mean, like Buxton and Sano were?? I’d rather they just improve over time. Fwiw…I’m hoping Lee is not a prospect in 2025.

    Add Severino to the long list of AAA bats with which we can be infatuated. Serious question…how does he grade out defensively? Is he a legitimate second or third baseman…or is he yet another DH at the major league level?

    “This run of deflating at-bats can't continue against the likes of Texas and Cleveland in the coming weeks, or the AL Central race will be tighter than it needs to be.” How, exactly? The worst offensive teams in the majors (in order): Oakland, Detroit, Kansas City, Cleveland (and sinking), Miami, White Sox. The Twins have been the same frustrating, inefficient and inconsistent offensive team all year. It just doesn’t matter. Detroit is the only team left that even cares right now. They would have to make up 7 1/2 games over the last 37…and they’re Detroit.

    I knew the Pirates had this kind of performance in them. I knew Laz Diaz had this kind of performance in him. I did NOT know Keuchel had this kind of performance in him. That right there was some UGLY Major League Baseball all around…with maybe the lone exception being Keuchel’s ability to exploit a ridiculous strike zone.

    I do think the team stacks up better for a playoff scenario than it has in recent past. Winning a game or series is more likely. Having said that, it doesn’t mean a series win is LIKELY…just more likely than the completely overmatched pitching in past series has rendered. And it’s going to have to be the starting pitching that does it. Not likely that the bullpen or lineup suddenly pull rabbits out of their hats…not in a scenario of more than a couple games, anyway.

    Have you seen the tracker? With a Twin at the plate, Twins fans would expect that to be called a ball 100% of the time. It was a huge break. Breaks happen. Twins did plenty enough to deserve the win regardless.

    I think Rocco and the club covet his defensive flexibility. Doesn’t matter if you’re ‘neutral’, if neutral is better than the alternative AND your neutral at 3 different positions. That’s the argument, anyway. It might be a thin argument or plain horrible…if you could trust Kirilloff’s health. Still, it’s hard to fathom Buxton (who Gallo has been better than, btw), Lewis, and Kirilloff all returning and Gallo surviving. But it would not shock me in the least if rotating 10-day IL ‘injuries’ through the end of the year are used to keep guys like Luplow, Solano, Farmer, and Gallo around longer than any of us anticipate.

    Today was 1000% an example of Rocco deciding BEFORE the game is played, what he wants to do with the bullpen. But a win’s a win. Rocco’s move and the ensuing huge break in the Bohm at-bat notwithstanding, that was a wonderfully pitched game.

    At a minimum, the Twins HAVE to extend the QO to Gray, excluding serious injury between now and end of year. And I seriously doubt they offer a competitive muti-year deal. Question is…will he end up taking the QO? Probably not, but it wouldn’t shock me, either. Mahle, they may end up landing at a discount…if his health is encouraging, the Twins might take advantage of his depressed market. But, I don’t think you should COUNT on either of Mahle or Paddock being both healthy and good. And, IMO…you can’t count on any of the current AAA guy’s being good yet in 2024. I know you have to pull the trigger and ride with some of the prospects at some point, but boy…Headrick, Enlow, SWR, Varland, even Balazovic…I’m not seeing it, at least not yet. Varland as a 5, maybe. Therefore, I’d go after Maeda. What do I think they’ll do? No clue, other than the QO to Gray.

    Great thread! It’s not as interesting for those like me that grew up in Minnesota. I will say, though, that for those of us that are old enough that we became mlb ‘aware’ in the 1960’s in Minnesota there WAS a wrinkle: Our parents, aunts/uncles…the generations ahead of us…were NOT necessarily Twins fans, at least in the early years. They had lived adult lives without the Twins existing and had developed loyalties for other clubs in the mid-west…some of whom could be followed by the powerful radio broadcast of the day, even in northern Minnesota. My mom was a Milwaukee Braves fan, my dad, a Tiger’s fan, and my uncle and grandfather, Cardinal fans. They all adopted the Twins eventually…some more ardently than others, but I can absolutely remember watching games on TV where my dad was rooting against me and my team. For us kids, we knew we were Minnesotans…and being able to see them (and only them) play on television at that time, made most of us instant Twins fans. As an aside, the impact of Harmon Killebrew, and how he put Minnesota on the mlb baseball map can not be overstated in terms of how it accelerated the adoption of the franchise as ‘ours’ among the adult population of Minnesota in the 1960’s.

    Still...if you're counting on a streaky, barely league-average hitter in Buxton, and two rookies to carry your offense...there's a very good chance your offense isn't going to be consistent, period.

    In an extremely sad and frustrating way...yes. Between the two of them, could end up being the difference between 80 and 85 wins, with their 'above-expectation' performances. Maybe just enough to clear the extremely low hurdle to win this division....for whatever that may prove to be worth.

    For 2024, throw him in CF (with a better back-up plan than MAT). Or send him to a surgeon. Or see if he'll agree to a buy-out/retirement. Anything but DH.

    Is it just me, or does Jenkins swing seem ‘handsy’...a lot of weight forward? Admittedly, I’ve only seen a very few…so. But it seems like there might be (even) more power to unlock there.
