  1. Perez on the season has now thrown 154 pitches in 6.1 innings. He's going to have to do something different going forward because averaging over 24 pitches an inning just won't work as a starter.
  2. Great start to the season for the Twins. I am a bit concerned about the next couple of series since there won't be a DH. Minnesota needs Cruz's bat in the lineup and I'm not sure he can hold up for many innings in the outfield.
  3. Good win, though the Twins made it much harder than it really needed to be.
  4. The Cruz signing has been huge. He's been the only guy in the lineup able to do much of anything when there are guys in scoring position.
  5. Rogers on pace for around 120 appearances this season (takes the mound for 3rd time in 4 games).
  6. Astudillo for Castro would make a lot of sense.
  7. It might be time to give Rosario and Gonzalez a day off. Those two have been killing the Twins offense so far this season.
  8. It was great to see the Twins bats come to life, especially against a guy who was one of the best starters in baseball last season. On the pitching side, Pineda looks great and hopefully he can stay healthy this season. Perez on the other hand doesn't look like a starting pitcher. His stuff was good but 3 walks and over 80 pitches in under 4 innings sounds more like a long reliever than a starter. Luckily he has a couple more outings to make adjustments before he will be in line to start.
  9. A couple of thoughts on decisions that had a major influence on the outcome. First, I think Parker will be a decent bullpen arm, but there is no way he should be pitching the 9th inning of a tied game. Second, I just don't understand letting Kepler swing away with Buxton on second and no outs. Either Kepler should have been bunting or Astudillo should have replaced him. At that point in the game advancing Buxton was the only thing that mattered and if there is one thing Astudillo can do it is put the ball in play (with Buxton's speed any ball in play has a pretty good chance of letting him advance to third).
  10. If Kepler could have put the ball in play (a bunt maybe?) Buxton would likely have been on third and scored on Polanco's fly out. Letting Kepler swing away was a mistake.
  11. Parker with a pretty awful debut for the Twins. I really think Minnesota is a competent reliever (or two) from having a bullpen capable of reliably winning close games.
  12. How great would it be to have Kimbrel waiting out in the bullpen.
  13. From what I've read it sounds like a sore thumb on his non-throwing hand. Basically he's sucked in spring training and rather than cut a guy making $8.5M they put him on the IR to see if with more time he can get back to being a serviceable major league pitcher.
  14. I really hope Harper can carry over his spring training production into the regular season. If the Twins are going to be successful they will need a number of their bullpen question marks to perform close to their best case scenario.
  15. I suspect the Twins are going to end up deeply regretting not doing more to bolster their pitching staff. I think Minnesota was closer to Cleveland than people think and one or two pitching upgrades would have put the Twins in a position to compete in the central (and likely win the division if the Indians have some bad luck).
  16. Astudillo played CF for the Twins last year, but I have no desire to see him out there again. After Buxton and Kepler there aren't a lot CF options that inspire confidence. I'm personally not a fan of Cave's CF defense and really don't want to see him manning the position for any extended stretch. With Granite and Reed gone the cupboard was also pretty bare at AAA/AA in terms of competent defensive center fielders.
  17. The deal makes sense in that the Twins needed a AAA center fielder and they were probably convinced Reed wouldn't make it through waivers. With the losses of Granite and Reed Minnesota would have been getting pretty thin on major league ready players who you'd feel comfortable playing CF for any length of time.
  18. My preference would be to send Romero back to AAA and put him in the rotation. He has the most upside of any of the major league ready potential starters, and giving him another shot at starting makes a lot of sense when you consider that 3 of the Twins current starters are free agents after the season.
  19. I would have had Duffey, Reed, and Granite as the guys most likely to get DFAd. I still hope to see a couple of these guys off the roster due to the Twins adding more bullpen help and maybe a starter.
  20. I feel like the Twins need one more reliable late inning reliever. It seems like there is a lot of uncertainty with the current relief group where you don't know what you'll get from a number of the guys. I have concerns about Reed's velocity loss and if he will bounce back this season. Hildenberger and May have had success in the majors, but they also have injury and inconsistency concerns. I'm not sold on Magill or Duffey and the other options (Curtiss, Moya, and Vasquez) are all unproven. The only guys I have much confidence in are Parker and Rogers.
  21. I am beginning to wonder if picking up guys that other teams made a strategic decision to let go is more than just chance. Is there some market inefficiency that the Twins are trying to exploit?
  22. I liked the Pineda signing last off-season and I still like it today. What I don't like is that the Twins starting pitching depth scares me a bit. Berrios/Gibson/Odorizzi should be solid, however I worry about relying on an injury prone Pineda while having no established starters as insurance. The Twins young starters (Mejia, Romero, Gonsalves, Stewart, and Thorpe) have intriguing upside, but none of them have yet shown they can be consistent in the majors. A second concern is the rotation beyond this season. With Gibson, Odorizzi, and Pineda all free agents after the season the Twins could well have 2-3 spots in the rotation to fill next off-season. As we've seen over the years, adding one good starter is hard so having to add multiple starters could be a serious problem.
  23. Though I can't find it now, I thought I saw a report that Santana's velocity hadn't come back and he was waiting to hold throwing sessions with teams hoping that with more time he might regain at least some of what he lost. Basically the Santana from last season with an 88-90mph fastball gave up way too many hard hit balls to be successful. He will eventually sign with somebody, but I don't have much hope he will ever get back to being a capable major league starter again.
  24. I wouldn't be surprised to hear the Twins made a competitive offer, unfortunately that type of offer has virtually no chance of getting Kikuchi to sign. The only way that Minnesota would even have had a chance would be if they made an offer substantially higher than any of the west coast teams (which I'm fairly sure wasn't going to happen).
  25. It seems like the position players are pretty much covered, so if the Twins keep a similar payroll to last season there should still be over $40M to spend. I'll be very interested to see if we can make a major upgrade to the pitching staff.
