The return is about what could be expected for Duke. De Jong looks like a fringe prospect who doesn't have great stuff and is likely behind a lot of the Twins current pitching prospects. Costello is at least a little interesting in that he's producing pretty good numbers in low A.
My guess is Mauer is back with the Twins on a 1 year $8M deal (I just don't see anything more than a 1 year deal making sense). Having Mauer back would give Sano another year to prove he can stick at 3B and let Rooker start in the minors to show he can dominate AAA.
Rooker's SO/BB ratio has steadily been improving all season. In May it was 4.1, in June 2.5, and in July 2.1 (his last 10 games it has been 0.9). He's had an OPS over 1.000 for two straight months and really looks like he needs a promotion.
Here's my list of guys who look ready for a promotion. AA->AAA: Rooker, Thorpe, and Jay A+->AA: Barnes and Wells A->A+: Badoo and Ober R->A: Keirsey and Williams
I don't mind seeing Joe go after the first pitch. There are way to many Mauer ABs where he watches the first pitch go right down the middle of the plate and it ends up being by far the best pitch he sees in the AB.
The best word to describe the trade is underwhelming. A couple of C level prospects (plus another sub C level guy) at low A make me wonder if the deal is worthwhile. I guess if I had to point to one promising aspect of the trade it is that all the guys coming back are pretty young.
I'm not a fan of quantity over quality in prospect trade packages. I guess we'll find out if the Twins front office can identify prospects who are better than the consensus ratings would indicate.
I say give Garver as many starts behind the plate as possible. If he can develop to the point where he is remotely competent he'd be a great building block. His bat seems like it's going to be well above average for a catcher, so we really need to find out if he can stick behind the plate.
Over the last calendar year Gibson has been the 20th best starting pitcher in the majors in terms of fWAR (Berrios is 17th). To even consider trading him should require a huge package coming back and I doubt that an appealing offer is out there. I'd be more than happy to sign him to a 3-year deal this off-season.
I'm not encouraged by the number of balls that have been hammered by the Jays. The 3-4 mph Santana's lost really seems to make a huge difference in terms of the batters squaring him up for hard contact.
If Santana can get a mph or two back on his fastball (sit 90-92 instead of 89-90) I think a he could be used as an add on piece to get a better caliber of prospect in a Dozier or Escobar trade (assuming the Twins eat most Santana's salary).
Anyone waiting for a sign that the Twins should sell clearly got it today. An inside the park HR by Drew Butera to seal a Royals sweep is the most clear sign I've ever seen.
You are right about the comp pick, there's a decent chance it would end up as as comp B pick. I think Escobar accepting the QO is the third most likely scenario if it's offered. Declining the offer or signing a multi-year deal with the Twins seem more likely to me.
